Lowland League | Star turn required against dangerous Dalbeattie

Saturday, August 14th, 2021

The Spartans get back into Lowland League business on Saturday with a roadtrip to Dumfries and Galloway to take on Dalbeattie Star in this weekend’s match of the day.

It’s been an outstanding start by the hosts who sit joint top after getting out of the blocks with gusto however they suffered their first defeat of the season last week with a 1-0 reversal at Berwick.

For Dougie Samuel’s side, the disappointment of a midweek cup exit is firmly in the historical chambers, as the Ainslie Park men look to build on their four league wins on the bounce and an impressive clean sheet record.

Trips to Islecroft have always been exciting and at times tousy affairs with goals and cards never in short supply. With both clubs looking to maintain their positive start to the campaign, a cracking encounter is most certainly on the cards.

Kick-off is at 3pm.

EOS Qualifying Cup: Early exit as Rose prove to be thorn in Spartans side

Tuesday, August 10th, 2021

The Spartans bowed out of the EOS Qualifying Cup following a 1-3 defeat at home to Linlithgow Rose.

Spartans gaffer Dougie Samuel rung the changes from the starting XI that took on Broomhill FC at the weekend, with no fewer than six players swapping places as they took on the East of Scotland side in the 2nd Round of the tournament.

There was an early chance for the hosts when Blair Atkinson went on a trademark pacey run, his delivery to Aaron Murrell appeared to be just a little bit behind the striker who just couldn’t connect.

The visitors took the lead in the 7th minute with their first excursion up the park and it was Jack Ogilvie who gave the visitors the opening goal of the game.

There was almost a second when Ruari Maclennan had a pop at goal but this time Blair Carswell was equal to the task and pushed the ball to safety.

The sides were level in the 26th minute when a Scott McCrory-Irving cross into the six yard box looked to be a bread and butter collect for Lewis McMinn however he spilt the ball and Aaron Murrell was on hand to swoop and tap the ball home.

Spartans looked to build on this and McMinn redeemed himself with a fine save, clawing Sam Jones’ 20 yard free-kick away to safety.

Spartans made an early second half change as Euan Smith replaced Ian McFarland.

A Scott McCrory-Irving corner was sent to the back post and it was met by the acrobatic Mikey Allan who narrowly sent his overhead effort over the bar.

A further change in the home ranks came midway through the half when Kevin Waugh replaced the injured Dan Baur.

With fifteen minutes left, it was the visitors who took the lead for the second time. A free-kick into the box wasn’t cleared sufficiently enough and it was collected by Mark Stowe who drilled low into the bottom corner.

A final throw of the dice by the home bench saw Blair Henderson replace Murrell.

However it was the visitors who earned a place in the 3rd Round when Ogilvie’s neat touch set himself up for a half-volley that left Carswell no chance and sent his side 1-3 ahead.

Jamie Dishington was inches away from setting up a grandstand finish, only for a back-tracking defender to head his effort off the line in the dying stages.

EOS Qualifying Cup: Winning mentality catalyst to maintaining momentum insists Waugh

Tuesday, August 10th, 2021

The Spartans take a break from Lowland League duty tonight (Tuesday 10th) when they welcome Linlithgow Rose to Ainslie Park in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup R2.

Despite four clean-sheet victories on the bounce, form is frequently thrown out the window when it comes to a knockout cup encounter with the visitors looking to claim a scalp.

The East of Scotland Premier League outfit have had a mixed start to their campaign with half of their six matches so far ending in draws.  Of course, the cup tie will be played to an end on Tuesday night so a stalemate this time isn’t on the cards.

One key figure in driving The Spartans forward this season is Kevin Waugh.  The new recruit has been a player that Dougie Samuel was delighted to secure during the extended close season and the midfielder is determined to make his first season at Ainslie Park a successful one.

“It’s been a good start, but we still want to continue building momentum.  It doesn’t matter what competition it is, we want to be winning.

“Winning games of football just breeds a winning mentality and that continues on Tuesday night where we build on those four clean-sheets on the trot and keep firing in the goals at the other end.”

The tie against Linlithgow sees Spartans embark upon a mission to win a trophy they have done so 10 times previously, and Waugh is determined to kick-off his own journey to silverware following his pre-season move from Berwick Rangers.

Does Waugh have his sights on first season Spartans silverware? “100%, there’s no two ways about it. The last couple of years have been a wee bit hard for me being injured on and off.  That’s been tough enough on it’s own, then having Covid too, but I’m back playing now.

“I feel fresh, I feel fit and the minute I met the Gaffer in the summer it was a no-brainer that I was going to sign for Spartans.  I had another couple of options on the table, but they weren’t really interesting me.

“Whether the idea at the time was to win the league or not,  we’ll just need to wait and see.  We’ll need to do the business on the park.  It’s all very well and good talking on social media etc about having that ambition, but we need to have that ambition on the pitch – and that’s what I’m here for.”

Kick-off is at 7.45pm and will be played to a finish.  Admission Prices are £8 Adults and £5 Concessions.  You can buy your ticket in advance via the Fanbase app or alternatively we will still accept pay at the gate – card preferred.

Match Programmes will be on sale priced at just £2.

Under 20s: Binos lament as Lamont seals Spartans comeback win

Monday, August 2nd, 2021

Spartans u20s got their 2021-22 season under way in winning fashion with a five goal thriller against Stirling Albion at Ainslie Park.

With no fewer than 88 clubs spread over 6 Conference divisions, the Development League set-up this season is the biggest yet.

Under 20s Head Coach Les Atkinson had a fine blend of experience, returnees and new recruits within his match day squad of 18 players.

For visitors Stirling Albion, it was their debut in the Development League and it nearly got off to the worst possible start as Ben Lamont lobbed the advancing keeper, only to see his effort crash off the crossbar.

The Binos then went up the park and took the lead following some kamikaze defending that saw keeper Miko Komocki exposed and Spartans, remarkably, were playing catch-up already.

That lasted for a full two minutes.  A corner whipped into the box saw Ben Lamont rise above the pack on players on the edge of the six yard box to head net-bound.  The ball looked to have crossed the line despite the despairing efforts of the goalie, Blair Atkinson’s toe pushed the rebound back towards the onion bag however it was Josh Laing on the line who appeared to get the final touch.  We’ll leave it to the lads to decide on that one!

The joy was short-lived as another blunder at the back saw the Binos take the lead.  It took a solid piece of defending by Josh Laing moments later to ensure there wasn’t further light between the sides as they disappeared up the tunnel at the break.

HT: Spartans 1-2 Stirling Albion

Spartans made a double substitution at the break with Reece Mason and Given Ndlovu replacing Atkinson and McCrory-Irving.

The pair of replacements injected new found pace and within seven minutes of the re-start, Spartans were level for the second time.

Reece Mason collecting a pass twenty five yards out before progressing into the box and unleashing an unstoppable drive that flashed past the keeper at break-neck speed.

The swing of the pendulum saw Stirling Albion claim for a spot-kick that could have seen them regain the lead however the Referee waved protests aside.  Moments later, Ben Lamont was on the move at the other end of the park, rounding the keeper and before sliding the ball home, despite the attentions of a back-tracking defender on the line.

Ndlovu and Mason continued to impress most of the 70 or so watching from the stand with their nifty footwork, skill and speed, often drawing warm applause and even a wee ‘Ole!’ too.

With give minutes left on the clock, Liam Thabet came on for the industrious Aaron Cameron.

It was nervous final few moments as the Spartans defence came under sustained pressure, with Komocki and his back division doing just about enough to see out the game and take full points in the opening game of the campaign.

FT: Spartans 3-2 Stirling Albion

A delighted Head Coach Les Atkinson said, “It’s great to be back to Friday night football after months of inaction.

“Having only had around three weeks to work with our squad, I was fairly content with our performance overall.  We lost two soft goals so some defensive work required over the coming weeks, but plenty of positives to take from the game.

“The talent we have brought into the squad and their desire to learn and develop augurs well for the future. The game itself I thought was very open but felt we pretty much controlled large parts.

“Stirling contributed greatly to the game by playing some very attractive football and could have snatched a very late equaliser which would have been harsh on our boys.

“A good season opener from us with much more to come from this young exciting group of players. We now look forward to playing Edinburgh City on Friday ‘away’ at Ainslie Park.”

Lowland League | Students put to the sword as Henderson bags brace

Sunday, August 1st, 2021

Blair Henderson’s second half double saw Spartans end a seven day spell with maximum points and three clean sheets as Dougie Samuel’s side beat Stirling University 0-2 at Forthbank Stadium.

With the intensity of the early season fixture list, the Gaffer swapped personnel around for the trip to face the Greens who were keen to bounceback after their midweek defeat to Celtic B.

After a pair of four goal victories, Spartans went into the game with momentum behind them however it was the Students who had the better of the early exchanges however neither keeper were troubled in the opening quarter of an hour.

The first chance of the game came from the boot of Jamie Dishington who sent a 25 yard rasper just past the scrambling Stirling keeper’s post.

A (rather weak) claim for a Stirling penalty wasn’t entertained by Referee Dallas as the home side looked to make progress as the first half wore on.

A snapshot from Blair Henderson was the last of the opportunities, but his effort saw the ball settle in the empty vacuum of the terracing behind the goal.

Half Time: Stirling University 0-0 The Spartans

Now, we’ve paid our money and rocked up to see this movie already this season. The second half Spartans goal show took all of 60 seconds to start after the 45 minutes of trailers and a Fast & Furious 9 Blair Henderson was lurking in the box to take receipt of Mikey Allan’s cross to thunder home.

Sam Jones replaced Michael Herd ahead of the restart as Spartans looked to build on their lead.

A neat one-two saw Jamie Dishington denied by a decent save to extend the lead as Spartans turned up the temperature as the sunshine offered the same, bursting through the Stirling clouds.

Gregor Woods was next to enter the fray, as he swapped places with Sam Newman on the hour mark.

His first move was to make his way towards Blair Henderson to celebrate his second goal of the afternoon.

Scott Maxwell sent the ball beyond the Student defence to capture Jamie Dishington on the wing, he raced towards the by-line before sending in a teasing low cross which found Henderson lurking at the back post and the striker’s telescopic legs reached out to slide home.

A cross into the box this time from Sam Jones was met by the head of Jamie Dishington who could only look on in dismay as his looping header crashed off the crossbar and behind.

Lowland League: More of the same at Stirling is call from Hitman Newman

Friday, July 30th, 2021

Spartans make their first away trip of the Lowland League season on Saturday with a visit to Forthbank Stadium to take on Stirling University.

The Ainslie Park side take on the Students looking to make it a hat-trick of victories however Gaffer Dougie Samuel will be cutely aware of the dangers the Greens have caused his side over the years.

With 3 goals in four games, including a cheeky tap in on Tuesday night at Gala, new recruit Sam Newman is keen to continue his fine form and build on his thirst for finding the back of the net.

“Delighted to be playing in my preferred position really. I want to get involved in the goals, a few tap-ins and helping my team mates out. I feel like the goals have kind of fallen to me and its great to be back on the scoreline again.

With the perennial tight schedule in the opening weeks of the season, Newman is more than aware of the need to have a positive start to what promises to be a tough campaign.

The 20 year old, who signed from Edinburgh City during the summer added, “I think it really sets you up for the remainder of the season and the pair of four-nil victories is really important and gives us a good platform to build on and hopefully we can continue doing it for the rest of the season.

“I don’t know too much about Stirling Uni personally having not played against them before, but I would imagine them to be a very fit team as are all University sides. We’ll need to work hard from the start and hopefully we can build on the momentum.”

Supporters heading to Forthbank will get entry via the East stand. Prices £6 for adults and £4 for concessions.
