Lowland League | Sammy whinny settle for anything less than a win against Colts

Monday, August 30th, 2021

It’s another exciting midweek clash for Dougie Samuel’s Spartans as they welcome Cumbernauld Colts to Ainslie Park as the tricky Lowland League fixtures keep coming thick and fast.

The Gaffer will be looking for his men to execute their moves smarter than Michael Gove on an Aberdonian nightclub dancefloor and harness the opportunity to get back to winning ways against the Colts in front of a home crowd which has been in healthy numbers post lockdown.

Gregor Woods enjoyed game time on Saturday in what was his 50th appearance for the club however Michael Bolochoweckyj mustang around for his return as he remains suspended and won’t saddle up against the Colts.

As revealed in Saturday’s match programme, Samuel noted that Blair Carswell will be out for the next six weeks following the poor first minute challenge in the game against East Stirlingshire.  Check out our Twitter feed ahead of kick-off to see who will be taking over the reigns.

It’ll be a huge disappointment to ‘The Cat’ who was back to his best with four clean sheets following his return from a serious calf injury last season.  We wish Blair a speedy recovery and it was good to see him down watching against the Braves.

We have no shortages of Blair flare in the squad and record scorer in fixtures between the sides with six goals, Atkinson, is one goal away from notching up his half-century of strikes for the senior side.

Our visitors may have to look back to the opening day of the campaign for their solitary victory so far however a recent 4-4 humdinger against Gretna shows that the Colts have a nose for goal and will prove to be a threat as the look to win at Ainslie Park for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

Last time out between the sides saw eight goals too however it was a canter in the end for Spartans who scored six of them, with Gregor Woods not only breaking his duck but bagging a brace in an incredible evening at Broadwood.

The match kicks-off at 7.45pm.  Tickets can be bought in advance via the Fanbase App however you can also pay at the gate.  Season Tickets remain great value for money and can only be purchased via the same methods.

With no other senior games in Edinburgh on Tuesday night, we’re hoping our Affordable Football For All offering can stirrup a big support and bring Spartans the unbridled joy of three points.

Lowland League: Allan key to unlocking Spartans success against Shire

Friday, August 20th, 2021

Spartans head into Saturday’s Lowland League clash with East Stirlingshire on the back of an incredible comeback win over Bo’ness United on Wednesday night.

It was a result that put Dougie Samuel’s side into third place in the table and sees them with six wins out of seven games played in a busy opening few weeks of the campaign.

The visitors have had an indifferent start, although their 8th placing so early in the season means nothing and after two draws and a narrow defeat to new table toppers Bonnyrigg in midweek, Shire will undoubtedly head East keen to get their promotion bid back on track.

Comebacks are of course something both teams meeting at Ainslie Park are familiar with.  The previous two clashes between the sides have witnessed sensational Spartans recoveries – a Jake Davidson solo spectacular and an Archie Meekison hat-trick memorable highlights – however the Gaffer and the Spartan Army faithful will be keen for a more traditional route to three points this time round.

One of the main architects behind Wednesday’s late show was Malt & Hops Man of the Match Michael Allan.  The Academy Graduate reflected on the win, “I think we started the first half against Bo’ness rather sloppily, but quickly got ourselves back in the game and we had about half a dozen chances, but just couldn’t put them away.  We came out in the second half, frustratingly conceded again early, but plugged away and eventually took our chances in the final third and came out on top.

“If we can keep it tight at the back and the boys up top continue to do the job they are doing, we’re going to come away from games with points.  Wednesday was the first time we’d found ourselves in that position since the opening game of the season against Rangers where we’ve been two goals down but it shows that we are capable of digging deep and turning a game around and getting the win.

“We’re doing well at the moment, getting wins where maybe last season we wouldn’t have done so. The boys are simply taking each game as it comes and our immediate focus now is East Stirling on Saturday.   We know how difficult they can be as opponents and we’ll need to compete from the first whistle to keep them at bay.”

Kick-off at Ainslie Park is 3pm.  Advance tickets are via the Fanbase App however we do accept payment at the gate.  Admission is £8 Adults, £5 Concessions, Under 16s Free.

Lowland League | Hendo and Bolo combo sees Spartans complete comeback against Bo’ness

Thursday, August 19th, 2021

The Spartans pulled off the most dramatic of comebacks to recover from a two goal deficit and defeat Bo’ness United in a pulsating five goal thriller at Newtown Park.

With Sam Jones out due to suspension, Gaffer Dougie Samuel made some changes to his side for the inaugural meeting between the clubs in the picturesque town of Borrowstounness to give it it’s Sunday name!

The team made their way out of their temporary changing facilities, still in place due to Covid guidelines, out onto the paddock, as the golden globe of sunshine started to dip behind the stand.

An early run by Malt and Hops Man of the Match Mikey Allan, moments after avoiding a high toe near the head from Zander Miller, saw him whip in a cross only for the keeper to collect.

Ten minutes on the clock and the hosts took the lead in fairly flukey circumstances as Miller saw his initial shot saved by Blair Carswell but the rebound bounced off the Bo’ness striker and it landed in the net!

Spartans rallied and it was largely one-way traffic for the following 35 minutes as they pressed for an equaliser. Blair Atkinson with a couple of chances, one saved well by Murphy and another narrowly whizzes past the post.

Another opportunity, this time for Scott Maxwell, saw a header go wide then Jamie Dishington watched as a similar attempt hit the post, bounce on the back of the keeper then behind for a corner.

Remarkably, just five minutes after the break, Spartans found themselves two goals down. Tom Grant going on a run and he nestled the ball into the bottom corner.

Spartans made a couple of substitutions as they looked to find a way back into the game. Sam Newman and Lennon Walker, making his debut following his recent move from Dundee United, came on to replace Maxwell and Atkinson.

A lifeline came in the 65th minute as Sam Newman fought hard to retain the ball close to the Bo’ness bye-line before sending in a cross for Blair Henderson to stroke home.

Another Newman cross found Lennon Walker in the box, with a headed attempt going over bar.

With 13 minutes left, it was all square. Mikey Allan’s cross was fumbled by Andy Murphy under his own crossbar and Blair Henderson was first to react, with his long legs reaching out to stab the ball over the line amongst a bevvy of bodies.

Then, with the game moving into it’s final stages, incredible scenes as Spartans snatched the victory.

Sam Newman took on his marker down the line, he sent a long ball into the box which found Michael Bolochoweckyj who calmly chested down and slammed home before wheeling away to celebrate.

Injury time saw nail biting and clock watching in equal measure and there was as much a cheer of joy as a sigh of relief when the Referee blew his whistle for the end of a dramatic evening of value for money, top quality, Lowland League football.

Lowland League: Spartans head to Bo’ness

Wednesday, August 18th, 2021

The Spartans are back in midweek action as they make their inaugural visit to Bo’ness for the first meeting between the sides.

Spartans will be without Sam Jones following his red card at Dalbeattie on Saturday however Dougie Samuel will have an otherwise full pack to choose from ahead of yet another high tempo tough encounter.

After Tuesday night’s round of fixtures, Spartans go into the game in fifth place, three points off leaders Rangers B, the only side to inflict defeat on the Ainslie Park side so far, and a game in hand.

Hosts Bo’ness, in their first season in the competition, will be keen to get back to winning ways after an unwelcome hat-trick of defeats however their strike-force is to be reckoned with, scoring 13 goals in their two victories so far.

However the Spartans defence has been in fine form, with four out of their six games so far seeing Blair Carswell return clean sheets and just two out of the three goals conceded, the fewest by any team in the league, coming from open play.

It sets up an exciting evening at Newton Park as Samuel goes head to head with Max Christie, but will Spartans ruffle the Christie duffle?

Kick off is at 19.45h, gates open at 1900. Entry set at £7 adult, £4 concession, tickets via the Fanbase app or you can pay at the gate.

Lowland League | Drama in Dalbeattie as ten man Spartans dig deep to defeat Star

Saturday, August 14th, 2021

The Spartans made it five consecutive Lowland League victories with a hard fought 1-3 victory at Islecroft Stadium against Dalbeattie Star.

With a handful of changes to the side that fell to Linlithgow Rose in midweek, gaffer Dougie Samuel was keen to continue the positive start to the campaign against a Dalbeattie side who had taken the competition by storm with their impressive early series of results.

With the sides having a history for goals in games between them down in Dumfries, there was more than one net the hosts hoped wasn’t populated and that was the curtain in front of the stand used as a deterrent for prospective nesting sparrows who considered making Islecroft their home!

As kick-off beckoned, the net was drawn back and it was the one Darren Holt was guarding that was first to be bulging. With eighteen minutes on the clock, a comedy of errors saw the ball bounce of bodies who acted like arms in a pinball machine and it appeared to be Jamie Dishington who was the final Spartan to get a touch despite the desperate attempts to deny a goal by a Dalbeattie defender on the line.

The home man on the line may have got the final say, but which defender out there wishes to be credited with an OG…

Spartans dominated much of the play with Sam Jones causing concern with his neat play and turn of pace whilst Jamie Dishington came close following a run that forged open an opportunity but he could only send the shot wide.

HT: Dalbeattie Star 0-1 The Spartans

The second half kicked off in a similar fashion with Spartans taking the game to their hosts. An early corner saw Blair Henderson’s effort rebound and fall to Dishington who saw his acrobatic efforts go narrowly wide.

Lewis Todd came close with a rare Dalbeattie venture into the danger area as his glancing header went wide, much to the relief of the visiting back division.

Ten minutes into the half and Spartans doubled their lead. Keeper Holt perhaps confusing the ball with Dishington’s head in an aerial challenge inside the box and the attempted clearing punch landed on Dishington’s head, leaving Referee Wilson with his easiest decision of the afternoon.

Blair Henderson stepped up and despatched with aplomb to put light between the sides.

Star had yet another opportunity from a header, this time it was Dylan Cairnie’s header that went wide of the post. Another let-off for Spartans.

Midway through the half, Scott Maxwell replaced the industrious Ian McFarland.

Spartans continued to push forward and there were opportunities for Henderson who saw his netbound effort deflected over the bar by a last minute tackle and Sam Newman then perhaps too honestly remained on his feet despite attracting defenders like flies round the proverbial doggo doo.

With ten minutes on the clock, the visitors halved the deficit. Michael Bolochoweckyj was adjudged to have mis-timed his challenge in the box and the second penalty of the afternoon was awarded. It was certainly far from as clear cut as the one at the other end however up stepped Russell Currie to score.

A dramatic final seven minutes was set to unfold as the man in the middle reached for his pocket once more, this time to brandish Sam Jones a straight red in front of the stand for what appeared to be an innocuous coming together as the Spartans man looked to utilise his body to hold off his opponent. Not only an early exit, but with the current Scottish Government guidance, there wasn’t even the opportunity to head to the sheds for an early shower!

Dalbeattie could smell the scent of at least a point and wave after wave of play edged towards the Spartans red zone. However, it was resolute defending that was to win the day and when Bolochoweckyj launched the ball up the other end of the park to curtail another attack, it was collected by Scott Maxwell on the edge of his own half.

The substitute was initially caught in two minds on taking the ball for a run to the corner or go for broke. Thankfully it was the latter as he raced in on Holt and beat the keeper in a one-on-one to see his low drive pop in off the post, causing scenes on the travelling touchline.
