Lowland League | Spartans out to take Border control against Vale

Saturday, November 13th, 2021

After a last gasp midweek nail-biter against Celtic B, Spartans head to the Borders this weekend to take on Vale of Leithen in the Lowland League.

Blair Carswell’s return for Tuesday’s win saw the goalie come through unscathed and he is set to continue between the sticks for the trip down the A7.

Dougie Samuel will be looking to build on that dogged determination that saw off Celtic for the second time in a month against a Vale side who seek their first win of the campaign.

The hosts, under new gaffer Grant Sandison, have seen improved performance in recent times, restricting league leaders Bonnyrigg to just a brace of goals earlier in the week.

Sandison has strengthened the Victoria Park side since his appointment, making five new signings along the way and Spartans will be looking to take the game to the Innerleithen outfit from the opening whistle as they set out to add to their nine-match unbeaten run against Vale.

Kick-off 3pm. Admission £7/£5.

Lowland League – Dishington swoops to beat the Hoops once again

Thursday, November 11th, 2021

Jamie Dishington came up trumps for the second time in a month to net a late winner against Celtic B and earn his side full points after Kevin Waugh pulled Spartans level on the stroke of half time.

Spartans were boosted by the return to the starting line-up of Blair Carswell who took up his customary position between the sticks after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Blair Henderson, who netted a penalty at the weekend was on the bench whilst a Trialist took a place in the heart of the defence.

The match started off at a frantic pace with the visitors looking lively, whilst Malt and Hops Man of the Match Cammy Russell forced the Celtic keeper into a fingertip save.

Shortly before the half hour mark, it was the Glasgow side who took the lead. Joey Dawson providing a neat turn and finish to put the tourists up, much to the delight of the travelling support inside Ainslie Park.

There was almost a perfect, quick response when a Spartans corner was headed goal bound by Euan Smith, only for the Celtic stopper to gather at the second attempt.

As the respective coaching teams considered their half time team talks, Spartans grabbed an equaliser. Jamie Dishington’s initial cross put Mullen under pressure, only for him to push the effort over the bar. The resultant corner fell to Kevin Waugh who saw his downward header evade the Celtic rearguard and into the net.

Blair Carswell gave the home support something to warm their hands about on a chilly night in North Edinburgh when, moments after the restart, he raced from his line to make a vital save to deny Moffat.

The game started to open up as the half progressed, with the neat passing Celtic side creating a lot of possession but lacking penetration, whilst the hosts continued to press hard with Sean Brown and Cammy Russell causing the visiting defence a fair level of work.

A brace of chances for Jamie Dishington saw him clatter the post then narrowly send a shot wide. With time racing away, Spartans were looking at a potential third draw on the bounce, but the talismanic midfielder was to come up with the goodies when it mattered.

As the game edged towards the end of the ninety, a Mikey Allan long throw into the box was nodded on by Blair Henderson into the path of Jamie Dishington who pulled out a fantastic finish to beat Mullen and earn his side the win.

Lowland League | Honours even as debutant Brown bags draw against Braves

Saturday, October 30th, 2021

Sean Brown made a goal scoring debut for Spartans in a share of the spoils against Caledonian Braves at Alliance Park.

With the Lowland League campaign reaching it’s halfway point, Dougie Samuel’s side made the trip west to take on the Braves. Between the sticks was Under 20s keeper Miko Komocki whilst the Gaffer was dealt a late blow due to the withdrawal of Mikey Allan due to illness.

In a pleasant break from the autumnal showers, the teams made their way out on to the carpet under a blanket of blue sky. Kick-off followed a minute’s silence in respect of Scotland footballing legend Walter Smith who sadly passed away earlier this week.

Spartans started well and there was almost an early opportunity to break the deadlock for Blair Henderson who looked on in anguish as his header went narrowly wide.

New signing Sean Brown looked lively from the outset and he was a matter of shoe laces away from connecting after the ball came back into the six yard box from Jamie Dishington following a Henderson effort that grazed the bar.

Malt and Hops Man of the Match Cammy Russell was next to add an effort to the ‘shots at goal’ tally when his off-balance attempt could only clear the woodwork.

The hosts ended the half with a corner of their own, but it was headed well wide and the teams headed to the sheds in a stalemate situation.

HT: Caledonian Braves 0-0 The Spartans

The second half was merely a couple of minutes old before Braves defender Jack McDowall hit the deck in pain whilst making an unchallenged clearance. After lengthy treatment, he was assisted from the field by members of both physio camps.

Just under ten minutes into the half, Spartans took the lead. A free-kick was launched deep into the box and Sean Brown won the aerial battle to send his header into the top corner.

That lead, unfortunately, was to be relatively short lived, as Rhys Armstrong levelled proceedings when he sent Zac Butterworth’s cutback into the net.

Braves thought they’d stolen it in injury time when Armstrong ‘scored’, only for the Ref to rightly ping him for handball in the build up. As they say on the telly, you can often tell by the reaction of the players…

With the sands of time down to the final granules, Spartans launched one final assault upon the Braves box. Cammy Russell took a tumble under a challenge. He looked to the Ref more in hope than expectation and the shrill of the whistle that followed signalled the end of the extended second half.

Signing News: Brown moves on loan from Bayview

Thursday, October 28th, 2021

The Spartans have signed East Fife striker Sean Brown on loan until January 2022.

The 24-year-old striker makes the move from Bayview, where he signed a one-year deal earlier this year, and will be in Dougie Samuel’s squad for the Lowland League trip to Alliance Park where we take on Caledonian Braves.

Brown has proved to be a tough opponent in the past, with stints at East Stirling (alongside Jamie Dishington) and Cumbernauld Colts, therefore we look forward to seeing Sean in a Spartans jersey.
