Player News: Baur has Rosey Posey future ahead with move to Linlithgow

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021

Defender Daniel Baur has made the move from Ainslie Park to join East of Scotland Premier Division side Linlithgow Rose.

Following a brief spell on loan at Prestonfield, Dan has signed on a permanent basis. He has made quite the impact so far with a goal in last Saturday’s South Challenge Cup win over St Cuthberts.

Dan, who made 18 appearances for Spartans, departs with the very best of our wishes for the next part of his footballing journey.

South Challenge Cup: Spartans on a HiHi with clean sheet win

Monday, November 22nd, 2021

It was deja two for The Spartans as Blair Henderson and Sean Brown paired up to score their side’s goals for the second week in succession as Dougie Samuel’s side progressed to the 4th Round of the South Challenge Cup after a 0-2 win on the road at Haddington.

Over 300 spectators turned up in the East Lothian sunshine for the 3rd Round clash which was played on a delightful Millfield carpet against the East of Scotland Conference A league leaders.

With many fans having not even had a chance to bite into the much sought after pies from the catering hut, Jamie Dishington’s drive from the edge of the box was stopped by Dale Cornet between the HiHi’s sticks.

There was a mild appeal for a spot kick shortly after when the ball made it’s way into the home box, bounced around a tad and appeared to hit a defender’s arm but deemed to be accidental.

The East Lothian side’s Man of the Match Alassan Jones was quickly to be spotted as one of the dangermen and he had an effort blocked by Kevin Waugh which resulted in a simple enough save for Blair Carswell.

Michael Bolochoweckyj (we loved the PA announcer’s attempt – one of the best yet) was back in the Spartans defence and the former skipper was on hand to mop up a Haddington attacking move as the game continued to move from end to end.

With the game edging towards the half hour mark, Spartans took the lead. Cammy Russell’s pass found Sean Brown and as he knocked the ball past Cornet, he was unceremoniously flattened by the keeper and referee Williams made the easiest decision of the afternoon as he pointed to the spot.

Both players looked to have had the wind taken out of their sails, with the keeper taking significantly longer to get back to his feet. When he did, it was to face Blair Henderson who failed to let the delay in play hamper his quest for the net and he dispatched the ball into the corner with Cornet rooted to the spot.

Insult and injury combined, saw Cornet unable to continue and he was replaced by Robbie Stirling.

The second half started where it left off with Spartans on the attack with Jamie Dishington feeding Sean Brown who saw his attempted pass to Blair Henderson break to Cammy Russell, but he could only find the side netting in his quest to put further light between the sides.

Cometh the hour, cometh the excitement that perhaps only goalkeepers can offer to liven up proceedings. Blair Carswell channelled footwork that wouldn’t have looked out of place on Strictly however having skinned Guy McGarry once, a second bite at the Haddington man saw him robbed of the ball, which ruffled the net. Thankfully for the Goalie it was the top of it and much to the disappointed of the home fans who thought it had found its desired destination.

With twenty minutes left on the clock, Spartans booked their spot in the 4th Round draw. Cammy Russell’s midfield burst found Jamie Dishington who then put Sean Brown into space in the box to drive low past replacement keeper Stirling.

Post-match, the Spartans players and management were invited back to the nearby Bowling Club for fantastic hospitality including doorstop sized slices of Margaret Reid’s sponge cake. The hosts tell us that Margaret’s baking has been ‘enhancing our post-match hospitality since 1987’. We’re gutted it’s taken so long to have drawn Haddington in a cup competition…

Spartans out to turn the heat on Hi Hi in Challenge Cup clash

Friday, November 19th, 2021

The Spartans have a break from Lowland League duty this weekend as they head to East Lothian to take on Haddington Athletic in Round 3 of the South Challenge Cup.

Our hosts are sitting Hi Hi at the top of the East of Scotland 1st Division Conference A, undefeated so far and having conceded just four goals in the opening 14 fixtures.

Social media posts note the Millfield surface looking lush ahead of a cup clash against two teams who will be relatively unfamiliar with each other and should throw up an interesting encounter as the road to silverware continues.

Spartans recorded a 1-4 win on the road at Easthouses Lily in the previous round, whilst Haddington have defeated Dunbar United and Leith Athletic to set up the showdown against the team sitting in second place in the Lowland League.

Haddington will be looking to build on their impressive Scottish Cup performances against Highland League sides Deveronvale and Brechin City whilst Dougie Samuel will seek to progress in a tournament the Ainslie Park side last won in 2011.

We’ll bring you all the team news ahead of kick-off on our Twitter feed.

Kick-off is at the slightly earlier time of 2.30pm. Admission prices £6 adults / £3 concessions. Sat Nav postcode | EH41 4DW

New Signing | Ryan Finnie joins The Spartans

Thursday, November 18th, 2021

The Spartans can confirm that Ryan Finnie has put pen to paper and joined us here at Ainslie Park.

Finnie, a former Scotland age grade Internationalist, recently played as a Trialist in the 2-1 Lowland League victory over Celtic B.

The Defender also has an excellent pedigree at domestic level, kicking off his career at Hamilton and also having played for SPFL clubs such as Dumbarton, Alloa, Clyde and Queens Park.

The 26 year old has also taken his boots on the road, with a stint in Australia plus two spells in Sweden, before heading back to Scotland.

Ryan will be sponsored by Chris Kanis, one of our supporters who lives in Bad Schwartau in Northern Germany. Wunderbar!

Lowland League | Brown downs Vale in Borders win

Tuesday, November 16th, 2021

Sean Brown grabbed a late winner as Spartans notched up their second victory of the week as they overcame a stubborn Vale of Leithen 1-2 at Victoria Park.

Alan Brown returned to the bench alongside the teenage tangerine duo Lennon Walker and Finn Robson and Blair Henderson slotted back into the starting line-up.

It was the latter who was to open the scoring with 12 minutes on the clock when he was on hand to nudge the ball over the line after the Vale keeper turned a potential own goal off the bar.

The basement side were then to draw level just four minutes later in controversial circumstances as Luke Cormack appeared to collect the ball behind the last line of Spartans defence (i..e. two yards offside) but the youngster paid heed to the old adage of playing the whistle and he ran on to slide the ball beyond Blair Carswell.

There were differences of opinion in the technical areas as tempers frayed and fingers were pointed and the supporters harrumphed in equal order.

Sean Brown then found the side net after midfield hustling by Captain Ian McFarland as Spartans looked to regain the lead.

They thought they’d done so via Blair Henderson who headed home from a Jamie Dishington cross, but much to the striker’s bewilderment, he was pinged for a push, despite a lack of remonstration from the home defender on being fouled.

The sun dipped behind the hills and the floodlights were on full as the players emerged from the sheds for the second half.

Spartans had a massive shout for a penalty kick shortly after the break only for it to be waved away. Then Cammy Russell put in a cross for Kevin Waugh who headed over from close range.

There was a brace of changes on the hour from the Spartans bench as Walker and Robson replaced Jones and Russell.

Play was then held up as the Referee took a tumble following a Vale clearance that took him by surprise and clock him right on the coupon.

Alan Brown then replaced Gregor Woods as the game went into the final quarter.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Spartans went ahead for the second – and final – time. Blair Henderson’s headed through ball landed into the path of Sean Brown who rounded the keeper to slot into the empty net.

A snap shot by Walker then flashed past the post as Spartans looked to put some light between the sides as it faded around Victoria Park.
