Lowland League | First Footer Footy sees fans flock for North Edinburgh Derby

Monday, January 3rd, 2022

The Spartans welcome Civil Service Strollers to Ainslie Park as their first footers as the New Year kicks-off with the North Edinburgh Derby.

After back to back victories on the road, Dougie Samuel’s side return to home base looking to open 2022 with a win in front of what promises to be a bumper* crowd inside the Pilton arena. (* subject of course to Scottish Government restrictions of 500 supporters).

The encounter sees third place Spartans take on 5th spot Strollers, with just four points separating the sides and there being nothing to pick between the sides when it comes to goal difference. It sets up one of the most eagerly awaited ‘Trainspotting Derbies’ in some years.

Last time out, it was Spartans who earned the bragging rights with a narrow victory at Christie Gillies Park winning by the odd goal in three that saw the latest in the series of four reds distributed during the derbies across the nine games so far.

Spartans and Strollers have of course been long term friends and foes on and off the football field stretching back to the 1951 season when Spartans joined the East of Scotland League. The Muirhouse outfit had joined the competition in 1947-48, making a steady improvement before finding themselves rooted to the foot of the table in the 51/52 campaign that saw Spartans finish their inaugural season in 9th position in the sixteen team tournament that stretched over 30 games.

A review of the tables from yesteryear sees the two clubs fairly evenly matched in the less favourable half of the table over almost two decades before Spartans lifted their first East of Scotland title in 1971/72. Unsurprisingly, it was Strollers who went on to do the same the following year.

Spartans were to go on win the East of Scotland title on no fewer than eight further occasions before joining the Lowland League in 2013. Strollers then followed by entered the league in 2016.

This is the tenth league meeting of the clubs since then with some dramatic derbies along the way. We anticipate Tuesday’s clash will be no different.

Tickets for the game can be purchased in advance via Fanbase priced at £8 adults / £4 concessions.

Lowland League | Cammy rustles up winner as Spartans see off Students

Wednesday, December 29th, 2021

The Spartans extended their Lowland League unbeaten record to fifteen games against hosts Edinburgh University with a 1-2 win at a freezing foggy Peffermill on Tuesday night.

Calum Burns made his Spartans debut in Dougie Samuel’s defensive set-up as the Ainslie Park side looked to end 2021 with the three points.

An early opportunity for Blair Henderson almost sent them on that route but for a decent save from the trialist Edinburgh Uni keeper who flung himself at the ball and denied the striker.

Sean Brown was despatched towards the box and as he got set to pull the trigger to test the rookie keeper, Lewis Turnbull put in a last ditch challenge to keep the scores level.

Brown had another opportunity moments later following a decent Sam Jones delivery but his shot was well saved by the feet of the Student stopper.

Livewire Innes Lawson went on a foot race with Michael Herd and as they entered the Spartans penalty box, the Uni striker was left cuddling the turf that was beginning to glisten with a touch of frost in patches.   The home dug out yelled for a penalty however it was an appeal that wasn’t going to wash with the whistler.

The Spartans dominance finally paid off when they took the lead shortly before the half hour mark.  Jamie Dishington made the early running – and hurdling over a challenge in front of the stand – before Cammy Russell played a well weighted pass to Scott Maxwell whose saw his cross headed home by Sean Brown from deep inside the box.

The penalty shouts were levelled out after Jamie Dishington went down under a challenge at the other end however not only was the spot kick denied, but it earned the Spartans man a caution.

Blair Henderson was then denied for a second time by the Trialist keeper who clawed a net bound header almost into the path of Sean Brown however he was an agonising inch or two away from converting the rebound.

That second goal wasn’t far away though and in the 56th minute, a superb solo effort from Cammy Russell warmed the hearts of the frozen Spartan Army faithful as the fog rolled in.

Ian McFarland won the ball with a timely tackle in the middle of the park which was then collected by Russell who went on an audacious solo run from the half way line, riding a challenge before setting up a fine finish from a tricky angle that flashed past the keeper into the opposite bottom corner.

Sam Newman replaced Jamie Dishington and it could have been the dream introduction to the game when the striker went on a rampaging run only to reach out for a team-mate with a pass when he may have better settled instead for a shot at the sticks.

There was a close shave for Spartans when David Maskrey’s shot rattled the bar before coming down on the right side of Carswell’s goal line before being hoofed to safety.

Another change saw Sean Brown and Sam Jones replaced by Gregor Woods and Lennon Walker as Spartans looked to close off the game.

Alas, the next goal was to come from the Students, setting up a nervy final five minutes for the visitors. A long range effort by David Maskrey once again hit the bar, this time the underside of it and into the net to set up the forever cliched ‘grandstand finish’.

As the game headed into added time, Cammy Russell showed his experience by taking the ball into the corner to tick down the clock and even with the luxury of surrendering possession for a goal kick, there was no time left on the clock and Spartans secured the win.

Lowland League | Fancy some festive thrills at Peffermill?

Monday, December 27th, 2021

It’s a fixture with a connection like few others in the non-league calendar as The Spartans make the short trip across the capital to take on Edinburgh University on Tuesday (28th December) in the final fixture of 2021.

Dougie Samuel takes his Spartans side to Peffermill where they will look to bring the curtain down on 2021 with a win and continue their unbeaten Lowland League run against the Students.

The Spartans and Edinburgh University of course share a wonderful history which saw the birth of the Ainslie Park side back in 1951 – an offshoot of the Student club.

The Spartans were established by two former Edinburgh University players, Elliot Wardlaw and Jimmy Beaumont (University Captain in 1948/49), in the summer of 1951 and immediately joined the East of Scotland League. Ronnie Swan, aka ‘Mr Spartans’, was also to become EUAFC Captain in 1952/53.

The club was originally formed for former university and college footballers but the constitution now allows “other interested parties” to join.

There have been a plethora of players who have turned out for both teams over the decades, ranging from Jimmy Dunnett to Dan Gerrard and Ally MacKinnon to name but a few.

Edinburgh University & Spartans Football Clubs used to share a ground called Canal Field (now Meggetland) prior to the mid-1970’s when the Students moved to Peffermill & Spartans headed to the North of the city and to City Park.

Of course, there’s perhaps no-one more familiar with the surroundings of Peffermill than the Gaffer himself, Dougie Samuel. Sammy was in charge of the Students for some nine years before joining The Spartans in June 2012, making him the longest serving Manager in the competition, with Dorian Ogunro next in line, taking over the University reigns in 2013.

Despite the recent Scottish Government Covid restrictions put in play that limits attendances to 500, we’re sure that everyone who wishes to attend will be accommodated safely at Peffermill.

Kick-off is 7.45pm. Admission £6 / £4. There will be limited parking and sadly no catering.

Lowland League | It’s a Wonderful Life as Blair wraps up win for Christmas

Saturday, December 18th, 2021

The Spartans left it late at Broadwood as Blair Henderson wrapped up three points for Christmas with an 85th minute winner against Cumbernauld Colts.

Both teams made their way onto the park from their respective changing areas at different parts of the stadium in this pre-Christmas clash in decidedly seasonal fresh conditions.

The visitors took the game to the hosts from the off with Jamie Dishington looking lively whilst Sean Brown was deemed to be a little too enthusiastic in his aerial clash from a corner which saw the Colts keeper fold like a deckchair under the challenge.

If the first half was a programme from the Festive TV listings, Mrs Brown’s Boys would come to mind. Pretty forgettable and you’d be wishing for what was to follow after would be of enjoyable viewing.

HT: Cumbernauld Colts 0-0 The Spartans

Ten minutes after the interval, the hosts forged open the best chance of the match so far. A long range effort came crashing off Blair Carswell’s crossbar before the rebound was hoofed to safety.

Spartans then made a double change, both Brown’s made way for Jones and Walker as the visitors looked to press for the opener.

Both technical areas would be pleased with their defensive displays however a share of the spoils was unlikely to please either as the scoreboard clock ticked on.

Then, with five minutes left, it was Spartans who broke the deadlock.

Scott Maxwell sent a long free-kick up towards the Colts penalty area which was flicked on into the path of Jamie Dishington.

The playmaker was forced towards the byeline but his trickery allowed him to send in a cross that saw the Colts keeper get more than his tinsel in a tangle, causing him to lose control of the ball and Blair Henderson swooped like a seagull on chips to poke home into the empty net before wheeling away in celebration.

Colts searched for a late comeback however some resolute defence by the hosts and the cool head of Cammy Russell taking the ball for a walk into the corner run down the clock and with that, the full time whistle.
