Lowland League | Get tae Falkirk – and back the boys against Shire

Friday, February 25th, 2022

Spartans head to the Falkirk Stadium on Friday night looking to maintain their unbeaten Lowland League away record to hosts East Stirlingshire.

Despite being on the wrong side of the scoreboard last week against East Kilbride, Spartans go into the game with 9 victories in the last ten games sitting in Third place, sandwiched between the Old Firm’s Colts sides.

Games between the two sides, since Shire’s entry into the Lowland League in 2016, have had more twists and turns than a snake with an itch and in nine meetings so far, there’s only been one no-scoring draw.

Who can forget the visit to Falkirk Stadium back in December 2019 when 9-man Spartans defied the odds to nab an injury time winner courtesy of an audacious run and strike from Jake Davidson! Hopefully our nerves won’t be as shot tonight in what promises to be another cracking tussle between the teams.

Kick-off is 7.45pm. We’ll bring you team news and live updates via Twitter throughout the evening.

Lowland League | Spartans out to continue winning ways

Friday, February 18th, 2022

The Spartans will be looking to build on their eight match unbeaten run when they take on East Kilbride on Saturday as second welcomes fourth in this Lowland League match of the day.

Due to the pandemic, its the first time since 2018 that the sides have locked horns at Ainslie Park, that time saw a goalless stalemate, one of five draws in six Lowland League matches between the sides in North Edinburgh.

Both sides have lifted the coveted title silverware twice and games between the two former league champions are typical tight. They have also offered their fun moments off the park with lasered bananas, engraved planks of wood and coasters amongst the items exchanged in the boardrooms in the past!

Spartans will be without Euan Smith after his premature end to his involvement in last week’s 2-1 win over Gretna however gaffer Dougie Samuel is boosted by the return of influential playmaker Cammy Russell to the fold.

Kick-off is 3.00pm. Advance tickets are available via the Fanbase app

Lowland League | Blair brace bags win over gutsy Gretna

Sunday, February 13th, 2022

Blair Henderson’s brace saw Spartans remain in second place with a 2-1 win over Gretna at a rain-soaked Ainslie Park.

Spartans Manager Dougie Samuel saw Jack Newman return between the sticks after securing another loan from Dundee United whilst there were spots on the bench for Under 20s players Sam Coats, Mackenzie Scott and Chris Inglis.

There was pre-match drama when Jamie Dishington was deemed unable to start the game and he was replaced by Sam Jones.

Ahead of kick-off, everyone in the ground fell silent to pay their respects to Iain Muirhead, the Chairman of Bo’ness United who sadly passed away the previous week.

The opening exchanges failed to throw open any clear opportunities as Spartans looked to continue their unbeaten Lowland League run which had reached seven games.

There was neat play between Sam Newman and Bradley Whyte with the latter whizzing a cross into the danger zone however there were no takers in front of goal.

Kevin Waugh was in fine form at the back, mopping up Gretna advances and putting in robust challenges along the way, including one that Ngoy clearly didn’t enjoy.

Then the rain came. And continued. The fans scurried to the top of the stand to keep dry and the floodlights beamed against the backdrop of grey Pilton sky.

Sam Jones sent a corner into the Gretna box with the lurking Kevin Waugh desperately unlucky as he watched his effort come back off the post.

There was a break in play as Euan Smith required treatment in front of the stand. He was assisted back to the sheds and Rhys Caves entered the fray.

Spartans were still on the offensive when Blair Henderson looked to have had his shirt pulled whilst seeking to make contact with a cross. Despite the striker’s remonstrations, no foul play was deemed to have taken place and almost immediately, Gretna went on the counter attack and a sclaffed shot from Robbie Ivison appeared to elude Newman and the ball slipped into the net.

With the game hurtling towards half time, Spartans were on level terms and it was hitman Henderson with the equaliser.

Sam Jones fed Allan Smith on the edge of the box and the neatest of touches saw the ball fall into the path of Blair Henderson who drilled home.

Henderson looked as if he’d put his side ahead shortly after the interval when he popped up at the back post from a corner to tap home however the lino had other plans and the flag was raised to curtail any celebrations.

Midway through the half, Blair Henderson was on hand to get that second goal, a crucial strike that was to secure the three points in the end.

Despite a trio of Gretna defensive headers from a cross into the box to attempt a clearance, he ball fell to 5 who launched the ball back into the penalty area. Henderson nodding down to Allan Smith who laid off to the prolific striker who netted his 29th of the season.

Spartans made a 68th minute change with Mackenzie ‘Mackie’ Scott replacing Allan Smith up top.

The youngster almost made it a dream debut when he attempted to curl the ball into the net only for a fine fingertip save denying him.

South Challenge Cup | Russell at the double as Spartans see off Syngenta in seven goal thriller

Monday, February 7th, 2022

The Spartans required extra-time in a seven goal thriller to edge out Syngenta to progress in the South Challenge Cup in abysmal conditions at Ainslie Park.

Gaffer Dougie Samuel shuffled his squad for the cup tie against the Conference X side with a debut between the sticks for Adam Meek, whilst Under 20s team mate Sam Coats was promoted to the bench where he was joined by new signing Rhys Caves who signed late in the week on loan from Dundee United.

Syngenta kicked off and sadly for Meek, his first touch of the ball was to pick it out of the net within 10 seconds.  The visitors passing the ball up the park and Fotheringham unleashed an unstoppable drive that sailed into the top corner despite Meek’s efforts.

It was to be quite the opening eight minutes for teenager Meek as his second touch of the ball was to save a Syngenta penalty after a mild coming together of two players in the box resulted in a fairly mild spot kick award.

Spartans rallied and Scott Maxwell came close to equalising, the Dishington went on a run before seeing his shot well saved.

Mikey Herd was forced to withdraw early in the encounter and it was an early debut for Caves.

Dishington was then denied by the outstretched foot of the visitors keeper however the sides were finally on level terms shortly after.

Cammy Russell providing a cross into the box and it found Blair Henderson lurking at the back post and the prolific marksman volley home.

Then, on the stroke of half time, Spartans took the lead.  Fine play in the middle of the park from Bradley Whyte saw the ball break to Cammy Russell and it was Jamie Dishington on hand to convert the cross home.

HT: The Spartans 2-1 Syngenta

The second half got off to a flying start with the sides exchanging goals within the opening six minutes of the restart.

Syngenta were up first with an equaliser from a well executed free-kick from Fotheringham then Cammy Russell rounded the keeper to slot home however it took a debate between Ref and Lino to turn round the latter’s offside flag to identify the ball had come off a defender and the goal was to stand.

Having poked their nose back in front again, the hosts launched a wave of attacks on the Grangemouth based side’s red zone however they just couldn’t make the magic happen in the box.

Another dead-ball from Fotheringham just went over Meek’s crossbar and Rogers came close to tying the tie again when he saw his chip effort go wide.

Blair Henderson then put the ball in the net however he was to be flagged offside, this time there was to be no second chance for a review.

A further home substitution saw Allan Smith come on for Sam Newman as the game headed towards its anticipated end.

Then, with the 109 fans having one eye on the hope of getting back into the warmth of clubhouse or cars, Syngenta sent the game into extra time courtesy of a Miller strike.

FT: The Spartans 3-3 Syngenta

The opening half of extra time failed to trouble the scoreboard or throw up any notable opportunities for either side.  It did however offer a third debutant in the shape of Sam Coats, who had scored twice the previous evening for the Under 20s, as he replaced Jamie Dishington.

Coats was to be instrumental in setting up what proved to be the winner when the youngster showed strength and skill to win back possession deep in his own half before gliding past two players before sending Cammy Russell on his way to score and send Spartans through to the 5th Round draw.

Lowland League | Henderson hat-trick sees Spartans bounceback at Broomhill

Sunday, January 30th, 2022

Blair Henderson collected his four match ball of the season as his hat-trick perfected a Spartans comeback against Broomhill FC in Alloa.

It was an unchanged starting XI chosen by Dougie Samuel from last week’s win over Strollers that took to the field at what was a decidedly blowy Indodrill Stadium.

The opening ten minutes saw the sides look to gauge the conditions, with the ball at times akin to the 99p float-a-away your Mum bought you at the seaside on your summer holidays.

There then followed a five minute period that saw the hosts race to a 3-0 lead. First up was a free-kick from 20 yards that was despatched directly by Evan Maley.

Next, it was a tap-in for Fin Gray after a second Maley dead ball effort wasn’t held by Miko Komocki in the wind. The final blow came moments later when Maley was once again the architect with a cross that found Connor Smith who drilled home despite calls for offside from Spartans defenders.

The Broomhill media team were looking at the ‘gone with the wind / blown away’ style headlines for sure by this point but could Spartans get their nose back in it before the break?

Thankfully yes and it was Blair Henderson at the back post who headed home to reduce the deficit to offer a glimmer of hope.

HT: Broomhill FC 3-1 The Spartans

Spartans started the livelier of the two sides after the break with both Jamie Dishington and Cammy Russell tormented the home defence.

There was a lengthy delay just before the hour as Broomhill’s Connor Smith required treatment for a head knock. Both technical areas were quick to race onto the pitch to offer their assistance and post-match, the hosts informed social media that the player had left hospital following a precautionary check-up.

With twenty five minutes left, Spartans made a double change with Sam Newman and Allan Smith replacing Scott Maxwell and Sam Jones.

When Cammy Russell was upended in the box in the 70th minute, Blair Henderson stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from twelve yards to set up, as cliches would have it, a ‘grandstand finale’.

8 additional minutes were still to play for, as was an equaliser. Mikey Herd launched a long ball to the edge of the Broomhill box, it was chested down by the alert Blair Henderson who took a touch before sliding under the advancing keeper to make it 3-3.

Then, deep into injury time, Broomhill were reduced to 10 men however there wasn’t enough on the clock to allow Spartans to benefit from the numerical advantage to seek a winner.

Lowland League | It’s North Edinburgh Derby time!

Friday, January 21st, 2022

The Spartans welcome Civil Service Strollers to Ainslie Park on Saturday for the long awaited and rescheduled North Edinburgh Derby.

The encounter sees second place Spartans take on 6th spot Strollers and with just seven points separating the sides, it sets up one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures in some years.

Ahead of the game, Dougie Samuel has added new signings Allan Smith and Bradley Whyte to the squad, whilst Gregor Woods heads to Musselburgh on loan.

Last time out, it was Spartans who earned the bragging rights with a narrow victory at Christie Gillies Park winning by the odd goal in three that saw the latest in the series of four reds distributed during the derbies across the nine games so far.

Spartans and Strollers have of course been long term friends and foes on and off the football field stretching back to the 1951 season when Spartans joined the East of Scotland League. The Muirhouse outfit had joined the competition in 1947-48, making a steady improvement before finding themselves rooted to the foot of the table in the 51/52 campaign that saw Spartans finish their inaugural season in 9th position in the sixteen team tournament that stretched over 30 games.

A review of the tables from yesteryear sees the two clubs fairly evenly matched in the less favourable half of the table over almost two decades before Spartans lifted their first East of Scotland title in 1971/72. Unsurprisingly, it was Strollers who went on to do the same the following year.

Spartans were to go on win the East of Scotland title on no fewer than eight further occasions before joining the Lowland League in 2013. Strollers then followed by entered the league in 2016.

This is the tenth league meeting of the clubs since then with some dramatic derbies along the way. We anticipate Saturday’s clash will be no different.

Tickets for the game can be purchased in advance via Fanbase priced at £8 adults / £4 concessions.
