Valiant Spartans dealt cruel blow at the death at Colts

Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Spartans were denied at the death in foul conditions at Broadwood after valiantly playing a full hour of the game against Cumbernauld Colts with 10 men.

It was Spartans who came out of the starting blocks with gusto in the rain and within three minutes, Mikey Herd’s cross was narrowly headed wide by David Greenhill.

Just eight minutes had lapsed when the visitors took the lead.  The Malt and Hops Man of the Match Jamie Dishington found Greenhill who atoned for his earlier miss with a sublime strike, finding the top corner from 20 yards with the left foot.

Ian McFarland was up next to test out the Colts keeper however his long range effort was deflected behind for a corner.

The man in the middle will have spent much of his post-match drying out period completing his bookings report, with a host of players finding his jotter on a night where a degree of sympathy may have been offered for the slippy 3G surface as the incessant rain lashed down.

It was one of the cards that saw Spartans reduced to 10 men on the half hour mark when, just moments after being clattered himself, McFarland found himself making the solo walk back to the sheds, earning a red for a challenge undoubtedly born out of frustration.

Colour-blindness is prevalent amongst males which may explain the reasons behind Colts keeper coming out for the second half wearing his third jersey of the match to avoid a clash of shirts.

The keeper was then called into action to deny Dishington with his feet.  It was feet of a different kind that upended the same player shortly after however Greenhill couldn’t direct the subsequent free-kick home.

A revolving door policy for replacements was deployed by the home side, with what appeared to be most on a booking being replaced by a colleague from the bench.

When Blair Tolmie noticed Fahey off his line, the big defender launched a speculative free-kick effort from inside his own half, only for the ball to divert away from the target.

Colts looked to have levelled with 20 minutes to go when a goalmouth stramash had shades of 1966 and Russian Linesman as the ball appeared to have crossed the line.  With all eyes on the match officials, the whistle blew – for an infringement on Andrew Stobie l instead, much to the bemusement of the home team.

Then, as the game drifted into the fourth minute of injury time, Colts were awarded a penalty of soft proportions.  A launch into the box saw Adam Corbett and a Cumbernauld player look to outfox each other, only for the Referee to adjudge Corbett to have used enough pressure in his holding off his man to make him go crashing to the ground.  O’Neil stepped up to earn the hosts an unlikely point with the last kick of the game.

Spartans go through in FNQ five goal thriller in the mist

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

Holders Spartans saw off a spirited challenge from Kelty Hearts to progress into the draw for the 2nd Round of the Football Nation Qualifying Cup in a five goal tussle at Ainslie Park.

The floodlights cut through the grey North Edinburgh sky as Spartans kicked-off their defence of the trophy against the Fifer’s who had former Spartan Errol Douglas in their ranks.

Tenacious early play by Willie Bremner almost saw an opener as he beat a dilly-dallying defender out on the touchline to race into the box however he couldn’t beat keeper Kyle Marley at his near post.

Kenny Adamson came close with a header from a set-piece, sending his header over the bar.  It should have served as a warning shot for the hosts and it was a similar scenario that led to the deadlock being broken.

A free-kick out wide was sent into the box and Sean O’Neil was first to react to out-jump the defence to send a looping header home.

Two goals in the three frantic minutes then turned the game round for the Cup holders, with Craig Stevenson influential in both.

On the half hour mark, Stevenson made a dash to the bye-line before whipping in a delightful cross that was absolutely leathered home by Willie Bremner.  Then, just three minutes later, the same provider demanded an early corner and his delivery was headed into the net by Jack Nixon.

Blair Atkinson outpaced his marker down the far-side touchline and the woodwork was rattled by Michael Herd’s subsequent header as Spartans looked to put light between the sides.

HT: Spartans 2-1 Kelty Hearts

Minutes after the restart and Blair Atkinson almost put light between the sides only to find Marley equal to the task.  However, the pacey youngster wasn’t to be out-done on the hour mark following a three pass move from defence to attack that saw Scott Maxwell break free before squaring the ball to Atkinson who tapped into the unguarded net.

The drizzle descended upon the Pilton San Siro and there were a few challenges to whet the appetite of the fans inside the ground in what was a tousy affair at times.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Kelty made the final stages just that little more interesting when Stuart Cargill capitalised inside the Spartans box before reducing the deficit to a single goal.

Malt and Hops Man of the Match winner Willie Bremner was then denied by a tag-team defender / goalkeeper stop that saw his power header diverted over the bar.

As time edged towards the final whistle, the only effort that almost hit the target was Paul Thomson’s no-nonsense clearance that earned an audible ‘Aaaaaoooooohhhhh’ from the crowd as it whizzed narrowly past a Mother and Buggy walking by to their seat!

Lowland League: Spartans stun Star with last minute winner

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Alan Brown was the toast of Ainslie Park when his injury time strike saw Spartans snatch full points in a five goal Lowland League thriller.

After their midweek excursions to Coatbridge, Spartans welcomed Dalbeattie Star to the Academy, looking to defeat the Dumfriesshire side for the first time since April 2016.  Andrew Stobie retained his spot between the sticks whilst David Greenhill returned to the starting XI.

Spartans made the early running and it took a point blank save from Dalbeattie’s Vinnie Parker to deny Jamie Dishington the opener.  The wind was a bit of a spoiler as it swirled around the ground and it almost paid off for Liam Park who called Andrew Stobie into action with a speculative long range strike.

It was the same player who made the breakthrough on the half hour mark when he swooped to slide the ball past Stobie to give the visitors an unlikely lead.

Spartans rallied and Scott Maxwell netted from the penalty spot after David Greenhill was upended in the box to send the sides in all square at the break.

HT: Spartans 1-1 Dalbeattie Star

The game sparked into life in the final quarter of an hour.  A wind assisted cross evaded a busy box only to find Scott Wilson in space to nudge Spartans ahead.

Star looked to have earned a share of the spoils with five minutes to go when a tame looking effort cruelly cannoned off Adam Corbett leaving a flat-footed Stobie stranded.

With three minutes of injury time played, Spartans launched one final assault.  Dishingston delivered to Brown who sent a curled effort from the edge of the box beyond Parker to earn three valuable points.

An ebullient Brown said after the game, “I think after the effort and hard work put in during the week against Albion Rovers there were understandably some tired legs out there today.  Credit to Dalbeattie, they came here with a game plan and stuck to it, they were our bogey team last season.  They were definitely up for it as most teams are when they come here, everyone wants to beat The Spartans at home but I’m delighted we got the three points in the end.

“We showed  that as a side we are resolute and have lots of character, I think we showed that midweek against a League 1 side.  That showed today too by the way we responded to their late equaliser.  I mean, it was pretty much a pass and it hit Adam and went in the net! We never seem to get the rub of the green like that, we always have to score good goals!”

Full Time: Spartans 3-2 Dalbeattie Star

Spartans: Stobie, Herd, Brown, Tolmie, Corbett, Greenhill, Dishington, McFarland (Stevenson 68), Wilson, Guthrie (Bremner 68), Maxwell (Atkinson 57).  Unused Subs: Archibald, Thomson, Khutsishvili, Pettigrew.

Under 20s: Dawson at the four as Spartans go nap in season opener

Saturday, August 19th, 2017

Spartans Under 20s got their Development League campaign off to a flying start, scoring nine goals without reply against newcomers Bonnyton Thistle at Ainslie Park.

Cameron Dawson started the season where he carried off last season with a personal haul of four goals, whilst Jordan Smith netting a hat-trick in what turned out to be a tough baptism of fire for the Kilmarnock side.

After finishing pre-season with a polished performance against Berwick Rangers, Les Atkinson’s side, including a handful of new signings, took less than 5 minutes to break the deadlock.  Summer signing Jordan Smith was on hand to open his account, poking the ball under the keeper to set the pace for the goal hungry Spartans side.

The visitors found themselves further behind in the 10th minute when Olly Hetherington delivered a cross of pin-point accuracy for Cameron Dawson who headed home.

It was an early double whammy that Bonnyton failed to recover from however it took until a minute before half time until Spartans found the net again.  Calum O’Neil the provider for Dawson who netted at the second attempt after his initial effort hit the woodwork.

HT: Spartans 3-0 Bonnyton Thistle

Just two minutes after the break, Hetherington became the second of the incoming players to find the net following a neat one-two with Dawson and a top strike that found the roof of the net.

On the hour mark it was five when Hetherington and Gabriel Hill combined to allow Smith to bag his brace from a header.

Dawson secured his first proverbial match ball of the season when he enjoyed the freedom of Ainslie Park courtesy of a defence splitting pass from Hetherington to grab his hat-trick.

That hat-trick was extended with twenty minutes left on the clock when prolific striker Dawson got onto the end of a Danny Sutherland cross to nod home.

Two goals in the final three minutes finished off the goal spree and it was Smith who collected his own hat-trick ball moment with a powerful drive.  With almost the final play of the game, Smith turned provider for Rowan Fife who finished off a fine night with his new side’s ninth goal of the evening.

IRN BRU Cup: Rover and out! Gallant Spartans exit in penalty shoot-out drama

Wednesday, August 16th, 2017

Spartans bowed out of the Irn Bru Cup, but only after taking SPFL 1 side Albion Rovers all the way to a penalty shoot out after the sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes of goalless action at Cliftonhill.

Gaffer Dougie Samuel rung the changes in his starting line-up ahead of the tie, with Andrew Stobie making his first start between the sticks in competitive action, whilst Jack Nixon and Scott Maxwell returned to the fray.

The late evening orange globe of golden setting sunshine was undoubtedly a factor at the coin toss when Spartans skipper Michael Herd opted for his side to shoot into the half-blinded eyes of Daniel Potts in the Rovers goal.

It was the Rovers net that looked troubled as early as the eighth minute when a Scott Wilson corner was delightfully delivered deep into the penalty box with Blair Tolmie and Adam Corbett both narrowly missing making contact to send their side into the lead.

Michael Herd was next up to forge open an opportunity when he burst into the opposition half, only for his shot to get caught up in the grass and trundle through for a goal kick.

When Jamie Gallagher collected the ball inside the visitor’s half there was an air of anticipation amongst the home support however they were to be disappointed when the effort went well wide.

Craig Stevenson then came close when he unleashed a bullet that started well, only to divert its direction at the final stages from the diving Potts.

HT: Albion Rovers 0-0 Spartans

Jamie Dishington was introduced at the interval at the expense of Ross Guthrie who was industrious in the opening period.

Rovers picked up the pace as they looked to put their league status superiority into action.  Ryan McManus with a golden chance to break the deadlock only to clear the bar with some gusto with the onion bag beckoning from close range.

Scott Maxwell was replaced on the hour by the PA announcers dream in Dachi Khutsishvili.

With little to trouble him throughout the match, Andrew Stobie had to look sharp to save a well placed free-kick from just outside the box to keep his side in the game.

A further substitution in the shape of Brandon Archibald was made with twenty minutes to go and he almost made himself the hero in the dying moments of the regulatory time when he drove into the box, twisting and turning his marker but only to find the side netting.

FT: Albion Rovers 0-0 Spartans

Extra Time came and went with one notable effort from Michael McMillan of Rovers that took a defensive deflection to safety with Stobie sprawling.  The keeper looked assured with his collection of the corner moments after.

ET FT: Albion Rovers 0-0 Spartans

The lottery of the penalty shoot-out followed.  Ross Allum, who came on for the second spell of extra time opened the Spartans account and Stobie saved the next.  It was heartbreak for Herd as the battle-weary skipper saw his attempt stopped by Potts. Successful kicks were traded before Khutsishvili was kept out leaving Jason Marr to be the Albion hero of the hour (or two and a bit).

Penalties: Albion Rovers 5-4 Spartans

Grinchy’s grand goal grabs win at Gala

Sunday, August 6th, 2017

Spartans continued their winning start in the Lowland League with a 0-1 victory on the road at Gala courtesy of a superlative strike by Craig Stevenson.

The opening spell was played in a frantic fashion with Spartans dominating the early play with Lewis Muir the busier of the two keepers.

Several passages of play, in front of the crowd inside the iconic listed Netherdale stand, were aborted by niggly fouls and offside traps in the early exchanges in what turned out a pleasant day for football.

The reward for their positive start to the game came for Spartans in the 21st minute.  Quick thinking by David Greenhill saw a short corner played to Craig Stevenson who then sent a delightfully curled effort beyond Lewis Muir into the corner of the net from out on the corner of the box. It’ll be one he’ll be telling Grinchy Jnr for many years to come!

There was almost a second shortly after following fine link-up play between Jamie Dishington and Ross Allum.  The latter whipping in a cross that was just hooked wide by David Greenhill.

Despite their dominance, Spartans were almost pegged back to level terms shortly after.  Despite what looked to be a foul on Michael Herd in the build up, Blair Carswell had to look sharp to pull off a fine save to deny Gala skipper Billy Miller as the Borders side pressed for an equaliser.

Loud appeals for a spot kick were waved aside by Referee MacLean ten minutes before the break when David Greenhill was bundled in the box by George Windram as he raced in on goal.

HT: Gala Fairydean Rovers 0-1 Spartans

Shortly after the break, the whistler once again was asked the question when Willie Bremner appeared to be clattered in the box as he looked to weave an opportunity to test Muir.

Ross Allum was then denied by Muir as the Spartans striker latched on to a through ball before thumping the ball off the torso of the Borders keeper.

There was more than a hint of squeekybumtime midway through the second stanza as Scott Main’s downward header came back off the astro to evade Carswell but only to hit the bar before being launched to safety.

With the game heading towards its latter stages, the home side were left incandescent with rage with the Ref who made it a hat-trick of non-awards after Rhys Craigie took a tumble after Carswell came off his line to stop the Gala sub.  The youngster fell to the ground and shouts fell on deaf ears, much to the relief of the visitors.

After a full five additional minutes of play, the final shrill of the whistle was sounded.  Spartans held on to gain three valuable points on the road, a place where we lost last year, to go top of the table after the third round of matches.
