Lowland League: Dish serves up winner to undo Edu

Saturday, October 28th, 2017

Goals from Ross Allum and Jamie Dishington saw Spartans turn round a half time deficit to defeat Edusport Academy at Galabank to remain one point behind league leaders BSC Glasgow with a game in hand.

Ross Allum had the best of the early chances following some fine individual play that saw him drive towards the edge of the box with his shot seeing keeper Belkacem scramble to his near post to collect.

The hosts took the lead in the 25th minute when Thomas Garnier unleashed an unstoppable strike beyond Andrew Stobie that drew applause from all corners of the ground.

Spartans rallied and David Greenhill was unlucky not to equalise with a 25 yard shot that was well saved by the French goalie.

HT: Edusport Academy 0-1 Spartans

It took just six minutes after the break for Spartans to draw level when Ross Allum burst into the box before thumping home.

Craig Stevenson was then unlucky with a free-kick after Greenhill was sent sprawling twenty yards out.

Edusport were reduced to 10 men with twenty minutes to go with Grant Nelson shown his second yellow of the afternoon.  This was to contribute to the Students undoing when Jamie Dishington snatched the winner with fifteen minutes left.

Under 20s: Smith brace sinks Shippy across the Forth

Saturday, October 21st, 2017

Spartans Under 20s round off a frantic five Development League days, picking up nine points in the process, with a 1-3 win on the road in Kelty against Burntisland Shipyard.

It’s been a decent start to his inaugural season under Les Atkinson for Jordan Smith and he continued his fine goal scoring form with a free kick on the edge of the box that found the top corner and left the keeper with the unenviable task of picking the ball out of the net.

Perhaps fatigue was starting to take its toll on the Ainslie Park lads legs and five minutes before the interval, Shippy drew level courtesy of a Fraser Gallagher strike.

HT: Burntisland Shipyard 1-1 Spartans

Same time, same player in the second half saw Spartans regain the lead. Smith this time from open play to edge his side ahead against the well drilled Fifers.

With eight minutes left on the stopwatch, Lewis Hall put light between the sides when he was at hand to slot home what proved to be the goal that finally broke Burntisland’s stubborn resilience.

Blair flair project : Atkinson nets hat-trick as Spartans go nap

Friday, October 20th, 2017

A man of the match performance by Dachi Khutsishvili and a hat trick from Blair Atkinson helped guide Spartans to an emphatic 9-0 victory over East of Scotland side Ormiston in the South Challenge Cup on Thursday night.

It was Khutsishvili who started the rout fifteen minutes into the tie. His first attempt was blocked, only for the defender to kick it directly back to him, leaving a simple tap-in from two yards.

The home fans didn’t have long to wait before it was two. Craig Stevenson finding the top left hand corner with pin-point accuracy from a 20 yard free-kick.

Khutsishvili made it three with twenty minutes gone as Spartans eased their way into the next round. Ross Guthrie supplying the defence splitting pass and from just inside the box, Dachi delivered.

Jack Nixon was unlucky not to get in on the goal action when his powerful strike rattled the crossbar, much to the relief of the goalkeeper.

That relief was merely temporary as Khutsishvili and Guthrie combined, the latter seeing his net bound shot deflected by Blair Atkinson to make it 4-0.

No respite for the man on the PA either as he had to announce two further goals before the break.

Scott Wilson was up next and he sent a 25 yard shot beyond the goalie, with the aid of a slight deflection then, with the half time whistle ready to blow, Scott Maxwell make it six with a free-kick from similar distance.

HT: Spartans 6-0 Ormiston

Ormiston’s first foray into Spartans danger territory came after the break when an attempt from a deadball effort hit Blair Carswell’s crossbar.

Scott Wilson then played in Blair Atkinson with a well timed through ball for the playmaker to net his second of the evening.

Atkinson then turned provider for former Under 20s stablemate Adam Corbett when he sent a cross into the box which met the head of the young defender and the outcome was number eight.

It was Atkinson who put the cherry on the South Challenge Cup cake with the best goal of the game. A fine solo effort from the speedster who weaved in and out of Ormiston defenders before unleashing and unstoppable strike deep into the bottom corner.

Dishington double, Groggy Goalie and Lubricated Lilywhites – Scottish Cup Match Report

Saturday, October 14th, 2017

Spartans hit five without loss as they cruised past Clachnacuddin to progress into Round 3 of the William Hill Scottish Cup at Ainslie Park, in a game that saw a forty minute suspension to allow visiting keeper Douglas MacLennan treatment following a second half save at the feet of Man of the Match David Greenhill.

It was a colourful carnival feel about the tie as a hardy bunch of The Lilywhites fans made the 350 mile round trip in an assortment of fancy dress and made good use of the Café Bar to enjoy the day out in an overcast Pilton.

The match was merely three minutes old before Spartans broke the deadlock.  Blair Atkinson collecting the ball deep inside the Clach half before tormenting defenders one way then another before striking low out of the reach of Douglas MacLennan.

That lead was then doubled in the 14th minute when Ross Allum showed his class to lay off the ball into the path of David Greenhill who unleashed a stunning volley that stretched the onion bag with its velocity.

Play from both teams was frantic and at times erratic as Spartans looked to kill off the tie and prevent any Clach fight back.  Andrew Stobie had to look sharp to pull off a fine save as the visitors, cheered on by their fancy dressed fans, set out to halve the deficit.

Nil gains turned into further pains for the Highland League men as Spartans nudged themselves closer to the next round when a dynamic run by Michael Herd saw the skipper release the ball to David Greenhill who obliged by netting his second, and his side’s third, of the afternoon.

HT: Spartans 3-0 Clachnacuddin

The second half was merely two minutes in when there was some concern for the Clach keeper who dived bravely at the feet of Greenhill.  Prompt action by both camps ensured the stricken goalie was looked after well until the Ambulance team arrived.  Reports from the team bus late on Saturday night suggested the stiff and sore shot stopper had joined his team mates to make the trip back up the A9.

After a forty minute delay, play resumed and it was MacLennan’s brother Paul who picked up the gloves to take up residency between the sticks.  The break in play appeared to benefit the visitors who came out the traps with a degree of renewed vigour.

Jamie Dishington was unlucky when the crossbar denied him from adding to the total however it was his seventy second minute power strike that put the game beyond any reasonable doubt.

The fourth strike killed the game off as a contest allowing for some niggly fouls and agricultural challenges to keep Referee William Watson busy in his post match notes.

Substitute Dachi Khutsishvili went for a run through the heart of the Clach defence and he was clearly annoyed with himself as he found the side netting rather than the inside of it.

Then, with the final kick of the ball, Jamie Dishington added to the tally when he converted a Scott Wilson corner with aplomb.

Following a re-run of the 3rd Round draw, the win meant Spartans will be at home to Fraserburgh in the next round.

Lowland League: Spartans close gap with Welfare win

Saturday, October 7th, 2017

Spartans closed the gap at the top of the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League with a 2-o win over Whitehill Welfare at Ainslie Park on Non-League Day.

Former Spartans and Welfare Manager Mike Lawson was an interested spectator amongst the boosted attendance for a clash which has offered many pre and post talking points following encounters between the sides over the decades.

There were few matters for fans to mull over whilst munching their half time pies following an opening forty five minutes largely remembered for the decidedly unseasonal summer-esque mercury recording and the requirement for sunglasses needing to be worn at the footy in October.

Two noteworthy moments in the opening period included a fine stop by the feet of Welfare keeper Easton who launched himself to deny Ross Allum from close range as he looked to convert Mikey Herd’s low cross inside the box.

Then, at the other end, Wright thankfully found the wrong side of the crossbar when his long range shot towards an unguarded net, following a rear-guard faux pas, landed on top rather than inside, the empty goal.

Half Time: Spartans 0-0 Whitehill Welfare

Despite being on the wrong side of the final result, the outcome may have been greater but for the Welfare keeper.  Easton was on hand to deny Ross Allum with a first class save as both teams came out of the sheds following the break looking to take control of a match where a draw wouldn’t really benefit neither club.

On the hour mark, Spartans made a double swap with Blair Atkinson and Scott Wilson coming on for Alan Brown and Jack Nixon.  We’ll call it a stroke of managerial tactical brilliance as, seconds later, Wilson’s first touch of the ball was to deliver the awaiting corner kick onto the head of Blair Tolmie who bulleted his header beyond Easton to give Spartans the lead.

Twelve minutes later, Jamie Dishington collected the ball from a throw-in on the stand-side before eyeing up a cross that found Welfare defender McKenzie caught in three minds and his outstretched leg diverted past his own keeper to double Spartans’ lead.

Ross Guthrie was next to enter the fray at the expense of Allum and he was a shoelace away from adding to his side’s tally late on following trickery by Blair Atkinson who outfoxed his marker to send another inviting ball across the face of the goal.

Lowland League: Spartans close gap with five star show

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Adam Corbett netted his first goal since graduating from the Under 20s whilst Alan Brown celebrated his 150th game in Spartans colours with a fine strike as Dougie Samuel’s side narrowed the gap at the top of the table with a 5-0 victory over Vale of Leithen.

Blair Carswell returned between the sticks and the Captain’s armband was reunited with Mikey Herd as Spartans rung the changes from Saturday’s win in the Borders for Tuesday night’s clash against the same side who were last to visit North Edinburgh, less than two weeks ago on Scottish Cup duty.

Come the end of the ninety minutes, the outcome was to be the same, however the Innerleithen outfit caused the hosts some awkward moments in the early stages with Blair Carswell having to look sharp to keep out a glancing header from former Ainslie Park favourite Chris Anderson.

Vale were left to rue that miss when their fortunes took a turn for the worst when Steven Lynch got first dibs on the showers after just 22 minutes when he was adjudged to be ‘last man’ when curtailing the dynamic pace of Blair Atkinson who raced towards the penalty box.  Following the dismissal, the resultant free kick from Craig Stevenson hit the bar only for the rebound to be headed back across goal by Adam Corbett who saw his looping header outfox Kieran Beveridge and find the net.

There was further opportunity for the home support to warm their hands when they roundly applauded a fine move involving Jamie Dishington and Mikey Herd, with the latter whipping in a cross that was just knocked over by Ross Allum under pressure from his marker.

The numerical advantage started to tell and on the 34th minute, Scott Wilson had a second bite at crossing into the packed sixed yard box following a cleared corner and it was Blair Atkinson who had a leap of faith to get in between the towering defenders to head home.

With the respective half time team-talks running through the managers minds, Spartans went three up with a minute to go before the oranges.

Blair Atkinson simply tormented his man, twisting, turning and then forcing a foul inside the six yard box for the easiest decision of the night for Referee Stewart Luke.  Ross Allum stepped up and despite Beveridge getting a glove to the ball, it wasn’t enough to prevent Spartans going in three up at the interval.

HT: Spartans 3-o Vale of Leithen

Vale’s Anderson took up his residency in the dug out for the second half to direct proceedings from the touchline whilst there were no changes within the home personnel as the players returned to the field.

Just nine minutes into the half, Spartans further extended their lead and it came in some style.  A break from defence to attack saw Scott Wilson embark on a lung bursting run, even more so with a hoolie blowing at pitch level, from just inside the Vale half.  His pace was just about enough to outdo the chasing pack and he finished with aplomb, seeing the ball hit off the base of the post and nestle in the bottom corner of the opposite side of the net.

Blair Carswell may have been the quieter of the two keepers throughout, but it was a second telling save that earned further praise as he denied former Spartan Sean Stewart from grabbing a consolation strike from close range.

Spartans scored nine minutes into the half and with the same length of time remaining, they topped off a good night at the office when Alan Brown put the icing on the footballing cherry when he delivered a pin-point shot with the outside of the boot beyond Beveridge.
