Lowland League: Atkinson nets double as Spartans deliver Deja Edu with late winner once again

Sunday, February 18th, 2018

It was more of a sense of Deja Edu for Dougie Samuel and his Spartans charged as they left it til late for the second week in a row to record yet another vital three Lowland League championship points as they edged of Edusport Academy 2-1 at Ainslie Park courtesy of a Blair Atkinson double.

With all the other teams in the title chase securing victories in their respective fixtures, Spartans looked to be heading for a draw as the game drifted deeper into added on time.

Then Atkinson popped up to break French hearts, just like Scotland’s Rugby Union side done across town last weekend, to ensure parity was restored at the business end of the table.

The first half offered no goals however it did see the hosts with the bulk of possession and attempts on target. The opening half hour saw the Edusport net come under attack with relative regularity however the ball just wouldn’t find its way into the onion bag.

David Greenhill, last weekends hero, came close with a free-kick as Spartans laid siege upon the Annan-based side’s penalty box.

After soaking up the pressure and preserving their rearguard, the Students came back into the game and it took a sterling show in the back division to hold them at bay.

The half time oranges done, team talks taken, both sides came out for a second forty five and shortly after, Spartans had the opportunity to take the lead. Ross Allum was upended in the box leaving the match official with an easy decision to make. Allum dusted himself down only to see his attempt saved and Ian McFarland’s headed rebound go wide.

Allum however atoned for his miss when the delivered a telling ball that found Atkinson who opened the scoring in the 63rd minute.

A grandstand finish was set-up when Edusport levelled proceedings with just eight minutes left on the clock.

Then there were loud appeals from the home support for a penalty kick when a cross appeared to hit the arm of a defender inside the area. Play raged on as claims for a spot kick were brushed aside by the man in the middle.

The spoils looked certain to be being shared as the sands of time moved on grain by grain, by not before Atkinson popped up to net the winner. Cue absolute scenes and a jubilant / relieved Dougie Samuel ‘doing a Mourinho’ down the touchline.

Elation for the Ainslie Park men and utter deflation for Edusport who must have thought they’d done enough to pick up a point in the capital.

Lowland League: Greenhill guides Spartans to victory with last gasp goal

Saturday, February 10th, 2018

An injury time goal from David Greenhill was enough to separate the sides as Spartans defeated Edinburgh University at Ainslie Park on Friday night.

There was a return to the starting line-up for Blair Atkinson whilst injury kept Jack Nixon and Gavin Malin on the sidelines for the visit of the Students to North Edinburgh.

Aside from a Ross Allum strike that saw University keeper Mark Tait require treatment as he looked to secured the rebound from his initial save, clear cut chances from either side were as rare as the night was cold.

A quick turn of pace by Craig Stevenson allowed for a cross to find Allum in the penalty box however his header could only find the bread basket of the welcoming Tait in the middle of the goals.

Blair Tolmie had the best of the opening half chances when he found himself in space some twelve yards out but his shot found Tait’s outstretched hand and the ball was diverted behind for a corner.

Blair Carswell contributed significantly to his own clean sheet when he raced from his line to curtail the danger of Jack Guthrie, sliding in to smother the ball at the feet of the forward.

Using our twitter feed as an aide memoire to recall the action from the baltic arena, the biggest contentious issue of the half was the spelling of harem scarem to describe frantic flash activity inside the Student box.

A trio of Spartans subs, a sea of chances going a-begging and some WWE style moves later, the match looked set to be heading for a stalemate.  It was a result that only the visitors would deem beneficial to their cause. Then, in the fourth minute of injury time, drama, delight and absolute scenes.

Blair Atkinson’s trickery saw ‘Sid’ snake his way into the University box before cutting inside to find Greenhill who duly despatched the ball between keeper and inside post before taking himself on a celebratory run to be met and congratulated by his ebullient team mates in the corner.

The lateness of the strike meaning their was no way back for the stuffy Students and when whistler Whyte blew for time moments later, a mixture of joy and relief swirled around the chilly night time Pilton sky.

Post match, a delighted Davie Greenhill noted how pleasing it was to nab the winner at the death however he insisted that the side must simply concentrate on each game at a time in the title run-in.

“The goal was a bit of scramble really if I’m honest.  I think it hit off both my feet before finding the net!  Over the piece I think we deserved to win the game although the Uni team were at times dangerous on the break.  On another day though, I think if we’d bagged a goal early in the game we’d have gone on and won it more comfortably.

“Tonight’s result though shows the kind of character we have as a team.  After our disappointment last weekend, it was important that we bounced back right away with a win. The way we won the game gives us a big confidence boost.  It’s all very well saying we have games in hand, but we’ve still got to go out and win them!”

Lowland League: Spartans 0-2 East Kilbride

Sunday, February 4th, 2018

Two second half strikes saw Spartans lose against fellow title challengers East Kilbride in the Lowland League match of the day at Ainslie Park.

Included in the Spartans squad was new signing Guillermo Lamarca whilst David Greenhill became the latest to earn the accolade of reaching 100 appearances for the club.

A dreich afternoon saw the floodlights burn brightly as the eagerly awaiting clash kicked-off.  There was an early appeal from the visitors for a spot kick when Blair Carswell swooped low to divert the ball away from the toes of a Kilby attacker who fell to the synthetic surface under the keepers challenge.

Jamie Dishington was first to test the visitors rear guard with a decent effort, only to find Matthew McGinley equal to the task.

With lots at stake from the outcome of the match, the challenges in an eventful, if not goalless first half, were at times what you’d anticipate in a nervy encounter.

Ross McNeil came closest to breaking the deadlock heading towards the interval when his shot from inside the box hit the crossbar before being hoofed to safety by the Spartans defence.

HT: Spartans 0-0 East Kilbride

Spartans came out of the blocks for the second half with greater purpose about their play however the Kilby defence remained resolute as the hosts looked to break down the stubborn rear guard.

The opening goal came just before the hour mark.  Strachan made progress down the flank before whipping in a cross that was met by the head of Craig Malcolm who nodded home despite the efforts of Blair Carswell to keep it out.

With ten minutes left on the clock, that lead was doubled.  McNeil making headway on the touchline before beating his man and coming back inside to send his shot home.

Under 20s: Spartans reach League Cup Final after reigning in Colts

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

Les Atkinson’s Under 20s reached the Final of the League Cup after a last four victory over Cumbernauld Colts at Ainslie Park on Monday evening.  The 3-1 victory sees them await the outcome of the other Semi Final between BSC Glasgow and Edinburgh City which takes place in seven days time.

With Spartans and Colts jockeying for the first past the post position at the top of the league table, this semi final offered to deliver more bang for one’s buck with both sides champing at the bit for a place in the final.  After a bit of a false start however, it eventually resulted in unbridled joy for the hosts after a stable second half showing.

Spartans were looking to get back to winning ways after a couple of hiccups and there was a little bit of heart in mouth early on when keeper Jordan Pettigrew slipped as he looked to control a pass back.  The goalie getting to his feet in just about enough time to clear under the pressure of a Colt galloping down his throat.

At the other end, Arron Singh was looking to stirrup some noise around the Colts box.  The pint sized playmaker just not able to turn his trickery into goals as the deadlock remained unlocked after a quarter of an hour.

That elusive strike was however to come in the 36th minute.  An in-swinging corner from Singh found Lewis Grant who nipped in ahead of the Colts keeper to head home his first goal in Spartans colours.

The lead that didn’t last furlong.  A defensive lapse just four minutes later finally saw Michael McGarahan nudge the ball over the line to square up proceedings.

It was almost a double from the head of Grant on the stroke of half time, only for the defender to watch on as the Colts shot-stopper done tremendously well to push the effort over the bar.

HT: Spartans 1-1 Cumbernauld Colts

Spartans regained their advantage nine minutes after the break when Josh Wishart’s leap of faith saw him head home and nudge his side back in the lead for the second time.

Further light was put between the sides midway through the second half when Rowan Fife broke the offside trap and, with what felt like suspended animation, he shaped up, considered his options, then duly blasted home into the back of the net.

The rest of the half was played out in relatively scrappy mode.  The hosts happy to play ‘keep ball’ with the two goal cushion and the visitors frustrated by a lack of possession and opportunity which ultimately lead to the Referee reaching for his yellow ticket on more than a couple of occasions to reign in the visitors.

It was a stable second half showing from a Spartans side and one that will send a signal to the neigh-sayers to say they are back to winning ways.

Lowland League: Spoils shared in stalemate against BSC

Sunday, January 14th, 2018

Spartans and BSC Glasgow shared the spoils in the Clackmannanshire rain with both sides having to be content with a point in a top of the table slog.

New signing Gavin Malin took his place on the bench following his move from Edinburgh City. The midfielder returning to the club after a five year break.

Billed as a proverbial ‘six-pointer’, the match had all the potential of a Karpov v Kasparov chess classic with a midfield war of attrition seeing each side carefully look for that decisive ‘check-mate’ moment.

There was lots of early bluff and bluster in the opening stages and the best of the chances came in the 6th minute with Murray dragging his shot wide of Carswell’s net.

A claim for a spot-kick in the 15th minute by the home side when Smith went down theatrically inside the box did indeed see the Referee blow his whistle and stop play, only for him to brandish a yellow to match the BSC striker’s kit for simulation.

Spartans were forced into making a replacement on the half hour mark with Blair Tolmie retiring and Gavin Malin making his second debut for the club.

Perhaps the highlight of a first half played out in dreich conditions saw Stevens drill a low shot across the synthetic surface, only for the home keeper to get down low to push the effort round the post.

With half-time on the immediate horizon,  a free-kick tight on the bye-line from Craig Stevenson had the potential to deliver danger but the opportunity went a-begging and the teams went into the sheds all square.

Half Time: BSC Glasgow 0-0 Spartans

Six minutes into the second stanza, Maxwell made good yards to the bye-line and his cross almost caught everyone off guard and it was inches away from creeping into the back post.

At the other end, Blair Carswell was the Spartans hero of the hour (and a half) when he made himself big to pull of an instinctive save to deny Smith inside the six yard box.

Malin the delivered a corner deep into the BSC area causing some confusion for the home stopper and perhaps with an air of non-expectancy, the ball landed on the head of Bremner who could only head wide.

The honours at the end were even and with results elsewhere in the top four going to plan, there’s plenty to play for as the business end of the season heats up.
Full Time: BSC Glasgow 0-0 Spartans

Lowland League: Maxwell’s Civil hammer gets New Year off to a bang, bang!

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

Scott Maxwell’s 15th minute header was the difference between the sides in a closely fought North Edinburgh derby that saw Spartans edge out neighbours Civil Service Strollers 1-0 at Ainslie Park.

For many a home fan, the personnel in the visiting line-up was as familiar as their own team’s listing with several ex-Spartans players and backroom staff in their ranks, giving that derby feel an extra sparkle to it.

A popular man, outwith match winner Maxwell, around the ground was Chairman Craig Graham with all and sundry congratulating the Academy Chief on his recent New Year’s Honours news, which saw him deservedly awarded the MBE.

With the Christmas trees lining the pavements awaiting collection, one would be forgiven for thinking the season of goodwill was behind us, however perhaps Strollers keeper Stuart Burnside was counting his lucky stars when he let a Craig Stevenson free-kick slip through his fingers and into the path of Scott Maxwell. Unfortunately the striker couldn’t borrow a spade in time to dig the ball out from under his feet to get any purchase on directing a potential gift-wrapped goal home.

Next up was Craig Stevenson’s dynamic dash to the bye-line, one of a handful in relative quick succession, this time his delivery whizzed across the six yard box, with Jason Stevens hitting the back on the net, sadly sans the ball.

The wave of home pressure finally paid off after a quarter of an hour.  A trademark long throw by Jack Nixon catapulted itself into the box and found the head of Stevens.  His flick on found the welcoming noggin of Maxwell who nodded home past Burnside to break the deadlock.

David Greenhill came closest to doubling the lead when he was a mere shoelace length away from connecting as he slid in on goal keen to convert another fine delivery by the in-form Stevenson.

HT: Spartans 1-0 Civil Service Strollers

A change at the interval saw Alan Brown replace Jack Nixon.  The replacement didn’t take long to get in on the action, with his long stride style runs up the line causing chaos amongst the Strollers defence.

Greenhill finally had the ball in the net early in the half only for jubilation turn to frustration with the stand-side linesman rooted to the spot with his flag flapping freely in fresh feeling Pilton wind.

As clichés go, a one goal lead often never feels enough, and as Strollers started to work up a mild head of steam in order to forge an opening to get back on level terms, David Churchill progressed deep into home territory.  Happily for the hosts, but not for the player, his final effort didn’t match his run and the shoot drifted decidedly wide of the target.

Samuel made two further changes as the game balanced on a proverbial knife edge, Ross Allum replaced Jamie Dishington whilst Willie Bremner continued his comeback trail with 15 minutes at the expense of goal scorer Maxwell.

It was Bremner who almost set up what would have put the contest to bed when his cross found Stevens at the back post however the striker was unable to extend his legs enough to give enough direction towards the net.
