Coming Up – A look ahead at the Spartans weekend

Thursday, October 24th, 2024

The Spartans weekend begins in East Lothian where Les Atkinson’s Under 20s head to Forester Park where they face Tranent in the Park’s Motor Group Lowland Development League.

It’s the third time this season so far that the sides have met – on league and cup duty – with Spartans gaining the early upper hand with a pair of victories.

The hosts come into the game boosted by a penalty shoot-out Challenge Cup away to Glasgow University last week whilst the Spartans head down the A1 on a nine competitive match unbeaten run.

Kick-off is 8.00pm.

It’s the beginning of the Road to Hampden on Saturday afternoon at Ainslie Park when Douglas Samuel’s men welcome Cowdenbeath in Round 2 of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

It’s the 75th outing in the competition for the Ainslie Park side and the third time the sides have met for the oldest national trophy in the world.  It was at the same stage of the Cup in the 1990/91 where they took part in a ‘farcical’ 0-0 draw at snowy City Park before (eventually) heading to Central Park for the replay.

Both teams take a break from their respective League campaigns with each club undoubtedly keen to be one of the twenty teams who join Championship and League One in the hat for the 3rd Round draw.

The Blue Brazil are currently 15th in the Lowland League and will make the trip over the Queensferry Crossing with former Spartan Sam Newman making a return to Pilton following his move to the Kingdom in the summer.

Kick-off is 3.00pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance via Fanbase or you can pay at the gate.

Jack Beesley’s side take a break from competitive action on Sunday with a closed door friendly.  Beesley’s outfit earned plaudits last week for their industrious endeavours against high-flying Celtic at New Douglas Park, being edged out by a single strike.   Spartans currently sit 8th in the table with two big games against Queen’s Park and Montrose on the horizon.

SPFL 2: Spartans edged out by Elgin

Sunday, October 20th, 2024

The Spartans were defeated 3-1 at home by Elgin City in a League Two clash at Ainslie Park on Saturday.

Following an energetic start from both sides, Elgin went ahead in the 12th minute.  After an initial save from Spartans goalkeeper Blair Carswell, Elgin defender Kyle Girvan followed in and headed in from close range.

Spartans were soon on the hunt for an equaliser, and in the 36th minute, a ball was whipped into the box from the right. Skipper Blair Henderson was bundled over in the box by Kyle Girvan for a penalty.

Henderson stepped up and coolly dispatched his penalty into the bottom left corner- sending Elgin City goalkeeper Aiden Glaven the wrong way for 1-1.

Spartans carried their momentum into the second half.

Midfielder Bradley Whyte drove forward from midfield past three Elgin players before getting a shot off- but it was comfortable for Glavin in goal.

Spartans racked up nine corners throughout the match. Elgin City’s defence stood strong, with centre-back Lyall Booth impressing in particular- making several headed clearances for his side.

Elgin manager Allan Hale’s substitutes undoubtedly changed the game. Forward Oliver McDonald was only on the pitch for a few minutes before getting on the scoresheet.

After winning the ball on the left-wing, he took on two Spartans defenders before cutting in and unleashing a great strike from outside the area into the top right corner for 2-1.

It was a sucker punch for Spartans who looked promising in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.  The home side tried to get themselves level once again, but ultimately ran out of steam.

Spartans’ best chance to equalise arrived through Bradley Whyte, after another great delivery from out wide – but his headed effort was easy for Glavin to catch in goal.

Elgin put the game to bed in the 89th minute though, when Oliver McDonald made a good run down the right wing. He whizzed a low ball into the box, finding striker Dylan Gavin for the tap-in.

Post match Douglas Samuel, said: “I thought it was a good game. I actually thought that over the piece we played well, and I think 3-1 probably flattered them slightly.

“We started the second half really well and we were on top, the key thing was that we didn’t score in that 20 minute spell. I think if we scored, there’s a good chance we might go on and win the game.”

SPFL 2: Stowe strike earns point in share of the spoils at Clyde

Monday, October 7th, 2024

Mark Stowe netted his first goal for Spartans in a share of the spoils against Clyde at New Douglas Park.

It was the visitors who came out of the traps quickly first, setting up camp in the Clyde danger area in the opening stages of the SPFL 2 clash however there was to be no requirement for the home keeper to be brought into action just yet.

Spartans continued to press with Hamish Ritchie closing down the defence, perhaps too close on one occasion where he blocked an attempted hoofed clearance from point-blank range knocking the wind out of his sails momentarily.

Mark Stowe headed towards the bye-line edging past his marker but a cheeky wee hand on his back was enough to put him slightly off balance before he could whip in a cross and danger for the hosts was once again averted.

A cross did come in from the boot of Callum Booth which found Brogan Walls on the edge of the box however the attempt wasn’t a collector’s item for the midfielder.

Blair Carswell was called upon to pull off a tremendous stop denying Jordan Allan what looked like an odds on opener for the home side after a speculative launch up the park landed in the path of the Clyde man.

Then, on the 33rd minute mark, Spartans struck.  Mark Stowe’s turn out of the tackle on the edge of the box was followed up with a sublime effort that nestled into the bottom corner beyond Robbie Hemfrey.

It was almost two before the break when a corner into the box was met by the towering Ayrton Sonkur who could only watch as his header was cleared off the line by Ross Lyon.

Blair Carswell was then called upon when he pulled off a phenomenal stop as he tipped a Paul McKay header over the bar.

HT: Clyde FC 0-1 The Spartans

An early Spartans on the break after the interval saw Kevin Waugh mopped up an attack with a headed clearance that allowed Brogan Walls an opportunity to go on the run.  His pass found Blair Henderson who was a magnet for home defenders and found himself crowded out before he could get an on target shot out.

A neat move with Brogan Walls the architect saw Hamish Ritchie look up to let fly from 25 yards forcing the Clyde keeper into the save.

Clyde then turned defending into a counter attack and it was to bear fruit with Martin Rennie drilling low and hard beyond the despairing diving efforts of Blair Carswell, offering the home support something to cheer about.

Spartans made a double change with Rory Whittaker and Aaron Scott replacing Stowe & Walls.

Hamish Ritchie thrusted his delivery across the face of the Clyde six yard box looking for a taker to divert home however this went a-begging.

Ritchie was replaced by Danny Denholm with just under a quarter of an hour left on the clock.

With the game entering into its final stages, Blair Carswell was called upon once again when he pulled off yet another fine save to deny Craig Howie’s header.

Premier Sports Cup: Spartans earn the plaudits in quarter final exit to deadly Dons

Sunday, September 22nd, 2024

Spartans fairytale League Cup run has come to an end after a defeat to Premiership Aberdeen. Aberdeen have now made it 11 wins in a row to start the season after they beat Spartans 4-0 at Pittodrie in the League Cup quarterfinal.

Dougie Samuel’s side went into the game knowing that they could have caused a cup shock, after already defeated Championship side Livingston and Premiership side Ross County. But Jimmy Thelin’s side had made an impressive start in the league and are the 2nd top scorers in the League Cup competition with 16 goals.

Spartans made four changes from their midweek trip to Elgin, where they drew 1-1. In came the captain Kevin Waugh, for his first start in the League Cup, joined alongside Callum Booth, Jamie Dishington and Cammy Russell, who returned after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury. They replaced Kieran Watson, Danny Denholm, Brogan Walls and Rory Whittaker.

The hosts made just the one change from their 2-1 win against Motherwell, with Leighton Clarkson replacing Topi Keskinen.

This was the first meeting between the two sides with Spartans in their first ever senior competition quarterfinal. They are the first Scottish League 2 side to make it to the quarterfinals in the League Cup since Rangers in the 12/13 season.

In what can only be described as a historic day for Spartans, in what was their biggest match in their history, it was always going to be a tall order to defeat Premiership opposition. It was the Dons who came out the faster of the two sides with on loan Millwall striker Nisbet missing from 12 yards out, after a lovely scoop pass from Nilsen.

It wasn’t long however before Aberdeen took the lead. After 14 minutes Pape Gueye scored his 6th goal of the season when a fortuitous break of the ball landed at his feet to smash the ball past Carswell from 12 yards out.

The Dons kept the pressure up and almost had a second just 5 minutes later. Clarkson put the ball on a plate for Nisbet, who completely missed the ball, in what can only be described as a let of for the team from the capital.

Palavera, who had an impressive first half, was then able to skip past Whyte, play the ball wide to MacKenzie who found McGrath who blazed the ball over.

There was then a flurry of bookings for Craigen, Nilsen and Booth with the latters foul leading to a Clarkson freekick that hit Carswells side netting.

There was just enough time for Aberdeen to get a second before the break. In the 45th minute Craigen’s chest control was picked off by McGrath. McGrath then spread the play to MacKenzie. His picture perfect cross was then converted from Nisbet, who couldn’t miss.

Goalscorer Gueye was replaced for Keskinen and it only took 40 seconds from Aberdeen to destroy the Spartan dream, as Clarkson scored a glancing header from a Rubezic cross.

A stramash of subs from both sides, with Shinne returning from illness and Sokler coming on to replace Nilsen and Nisbet. The away side also brought on Walls, Stowe, Ritchie and Kieran Watson for Dishington, Russell, Henderson and Paul Watson.

Carswell was again called into action and made a tremendous save from Shinnie, to deny him a 3rd goal of the season. But it wasn’t long before Aberdeen got their 4th. A nutmeg from Clarkson found MacKenzie with his ball being scraped into the Spartans goal by substitute Sokler.

Denholm then replaced Booth for Spartans, with MacDonald and Milne coming on for Molloy and Devlin.

A late chance for Spartans as Brogan Walls received the ball from Stowe on the right hand and had his shot from 20 yards out just tipped over by Mitov, who kept his 7th clean sheet of the season.

The final score may read out Aberdeen 4-0 Spartans, but it was a performance that Spartans should feel proud of. Aberdeen progress to the semi finals, with the draw being made for that after Celtic vs Falkirk game on Premier Sports. It is now 13 games without defeat for Aberdeen at home, who’s last loss came against St Johnstone on the 28th February.

The attendance was 11,615 with Spartans next facing East Fife at Ainslie Park next Saturday, with the Dons away to Dens Park to face Dundee.

SPFL 2: Ritchie rocket sees points shared in Elgin

Tuesday, September 17th, 2024

Hamish Ritchie netted his first goal for Spartans in a battle at balmy Borough Briggs against an Elgin City side who remain undefeated so far this season.

Gaffer Douglas Samuel once again rung the changes in what is a busy week of football for the Club with Cammy Russell left out the squad and Rory Whittaker making the starting XI.

Spartans looked to get on the front foot from the off and went in search of an early opener.  Whittaker made a run into the box looking to get behind the defence, only to be pinged for an infringement.

It was rather akin to a game of basketball in Mediterranean conditions with play raging up and down the park and it was the home side with the next chance, only for the offering to rise way over the bar.

Danny Denholm went on a solo rampaging run, forging open an opportunity however he could only direct his shot wide.

The hosts were keen to build on their late show win over Bonnyrigg and pressed hard however the Spartans defence were resolute in return.

Dayshonne Golding was perhaps fortunate not to receive a caution from Referee Joel Kennedy when he clattered into Blair Carswell as the Spartans keeper looked to launch a clearance up the park.

HT: Elgin City 0-0 The Spartans

Spartans made a double change at the interval with Jamie Dishington and Kevin Waugh replacing Whittaker and Hunter.

A couple of early Spartans corners were to offer little in the way of success as the visitors looked to open the scoring as the second half progressed.

The first clear cut chance of the night then fell to Blair Henderson who took the ball down well in the box only for the covering defender to do enough to put the striker off enough to make his send his chipped effort just over the bar.

Another Spartans change just after the hour mark saw Calum Booth replace Denholm.

A fine diving save from Blair Carswell kept the game on level pegging as both sides continued to seek the opener.

A further brace of changes saw Hamish Ritchie and Mark Stowe come on for Walls and Henderson.

It was an inspired substitution when just three minutes later, Hamish Ritchie found himself in space at the edge of the box and his low drive proved to be elusive and crept inside the near post.

That lead was to last all of 60-odd seconds as Elgin levelled with a header from Jack Murray who converted a Golding cross.

Play raged onto into injury time, with Ritchie having another opportunity to score, only to be foiled by a fine stop by the Elgin keeper.

SPFL 2: Last gasp winner elementary for Watson

Sunday, September 15th, 2024

Kieran Watson was the Spartans last gasp hero as the defender slammed home following a stramash in the Forfar box to earn full points in the latest SPFL 2 encounter at Ainslie Park.

Ahead of the match, there was a well respected minute’s applause following the untimely passing of former Spartans player and long standing supporter Bob Dryburgh.

The first opportunity of the game was to fall to the visitors after just five minutes when Skelly managed to just about get his effort on target with Carswell being equal to the task, getting down low to save.

In blustery North Edinburgh conditions, the game was turning into a bit of a lottery.  Mark Stowe was to have Spartans first attempt at goal however his effort could only find the side-netting.

On his return to the starting line-up, Jamie Dishington was next up to have a pop at goal, only for his shot from just outside the penalty area to flash narrowly wide of the post.

Former Spartans loanee Finn Robson incurred the wrath of the Ref following an infringement that prevented what looked to be a promising counter-attack from the hosts as they searched for an opener.

HT: The Spartans 0-0 Forfar Athletic

Blair Henderson was first up to have an opportunity to break the deadlock in the second half however the striker couldn’t keep the half-volley under the crossbar.

Josh Kelly was next up to find his way into the Ref’s jotter for an unhelpful challenge on home skipper Kevin Waugh.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Cat.  Blair Carswell may not have had his busiest opening hour however he had to look as sharp as a tack to make a dynamic double save to prevent Forfar from grabbing what may have been a crucial goal.

A double swap from the home bench saw Brogan Walls and Rory Whittaker replace Lewis Hunter and Mark Stowe.

Play raged on with both sides try not only to beat each other but the blowy conditions making precision passing a bit of a lottery.

With the scoreboard clock turning to 90 minutes, Blair Henderson was inches away from grabbing the advantage, much to the striker’s frustration.

Then, with the game into injury time, Spartans earned a corner kick.  In it came, a couple of heads made unconvincing attempts to steer the ball either direction.  It fortuitously ricocheted into the path of Kieran Watson who put full force of leather on leather to erm, leather the ball into the back of the net.  Cue scenes.

Forfar launched one final attempt to square proceedings.  A corner to the visitors was sent into the heart of the box where visiting keeper McCallum made the pilgrimage from his own area. A bit of goalie on goalie friendly fire ensued with both keepers landing into the back of the net, with Carswell clearly impeded in the process.

And with that, one final blow on the whistle.  Three hard fought points in yet another game between the sides in SPFL 2 decided by a solitary strike.
