Premier Sports: Henderson hopes for magical day against Dons

Friday, September 20th, 2024

Blair Henderson’s relationship with this season’s Premier Sports Cup has been a profitable one – so far.

The Spartans’ hitman has scored in three out of the five ties with Henderson’s header against Premiership side Ross County setting up Saturday’s Quarter Final clash at another top flight team in the shape of Aberdeen.

In what is arguably one of the biggest profile games in the Club’s history, the bookies may have the high-flying Dons odds-on to head to Hampden for the Semi-Finals however the talismanic striker is relishing the opportunity to take the game to the Reds.

“What’s crucial is that we make a good showing of ourselves again.  Perhaps realistically, I don’t think we could go into it saying we’re hoping to win, but we’re keen to play well and hopefully we can do some of the things the gaffer talks about and one of those is score a meaningful goal and you just never know.

“But I think first and foremost we’ve just got to go there and enjoy it.  Our fans and our families getting to go along can all enjoy the moment too.”

The travelling Spartan Army head to Pittodrie having seen their side already put in winning performances over Championship side Livingston along with a 0-5 win on the road against SPFL 1 outfit Cove Rangers in the group stages of the tournament.

Henderson added, “Saturday is very much a reward for everyone at the club.  The players, the staff, the board and everyone else connected with it too.  The fans have backed us throughout and across some big games over the last couple of seasons and this is another, with hopefully more in the future. It’s definitely one that everyone can go and enjoy and hopefully we can do ourselves proud.”

Last season’s Scottish Cup game saw Henderson and Co run Hearts close in a pulsating encounter at home, a performance that the side can draw inspiration from.

“I think you’ve got to take confidence from wherever you can for games like this, but its not at Ainslie Park which will be a big factor as well.  It makes it more difficult for us going there rather than having it at home but we’ll go into the game to go and enjoy it, to be as confident as we can be and just see what happens on the day.”

With 94 goals under his belt across his Spartans career, Henderson will be keen continue that tally as it heads towards an impressive treble figure.

“The last couple of games I’ve missed some chances which has been pretty frustrating on my part.  It’s not like me, I’ve been a bit wasteful but hopefully if I get a chance on Saturday then I can take it as we’re not going to get many.  That’s going to be my job on Saturday, so when that chance does come, we / me can take that opportunity and you just never know!

“Its going to be really difficult and its not going to be a game full of chances for us so we’ll need to be clinical when do we do get that chance.”

SPFL 2: Ritchie rocket sees points shared in Elgin

Tuesday, September 17th, 2024

Hamish Ritchie netted his first goal for Spartans in a battle at balmy Borough Briggs against an Elgin City side who remain undefeated so far this season.

Gaffer Douglas Samuel once again rung the changes in what is a busy week of football for the Club with Cammy Russell left out the squad and Rory Whittaker making the starting XI.

Spartans looked to get on the front foot from the off and went in search of an early opener.  Whittaker made a run into the box looking to get behind the defence, only to be pinged for an infringement.

It was rather akin to a game of basketball in Mediterranean conditions with play raging up and down the park and it was the home side with the next chance, only for the offering to rise way over the bar.

Danny Denholm went on a solo rampaging run, forging open an opportunity however he could only direct his shot wide.

The hosts were keen to build on their late show win over Bonnyrigg and pressed hard however the Spartans defence were resolute in return.

Dayshonne Golding was perhaps fortunate not to receive a caution from Referee Joel Kennedy when he clattered into Blair Carswell as the Spartans keeper looked to launch a clearance up the park.

HT: Elgin City 0-0 The Spartans

Spartans made a double change at the interval with Jamie Dishington and Kevin Waugh replacing Whittaker and Hunter.

A couple of early Spartans corners were to offer little in the way of success as the visitors looked to open the scoring as the second half progressed.

The first clear cut chance of the night then fell to Blair Henderson who took the ball down well in the box only for the covering defender to do enough to put the striker off enough to make his send his chipped effort just over the bar.

Another Spartans change just after the hour mark saw Calum Booth replace Denholm.

A fine diving save from Blair Carswell kept the game on level pegging as both sides continued to seek the opener.

A further brace of changes saw Hamish Ritchie and Mark Stowe come on for Walls and Henderson.

It was an inspired substitution when just three minutes later, Hamish Ritchie found himself in space at the edge of the box and his low drive proved to be elusive and crept inside the near post.

That lead was to last all of 60-odd seconds as Elgin levelled with a header from Jack Murray who converted a Golding cross.

Play raged onto into injury time, with Ritchie having another opportunity to score, only to be foiled by a fine stop by the Elgin keeper.

SPFL 2: Last gasp winner elementary for Watson

Sunday, September 15th, 2024

Kieran Watson was the Spartans last gasp hero as the defender slammed home following a stramash in the Forfar box to earn full points in the latest SPFL 2 encounter at Ainslie Park.

Ahead of the match, there was a well respected minute’s applause following the untimely passing of former Spartans player and long standing supporter Bob Dryburgh.

The first opportunity of the game was to fall to the visitors after just five minutes when Skelly managed to just about get his effort on target with Carswell being equal to the task, getting down low to save.

In blustery North Edinburgh conditions, the game was turning into a bit of a lottery.  Mark Stowe was to have Spartans first attempt at goal however his effort could only find the side-netting.

On his return to the starting line-up, Jamie Dishington was next up to have a pop at goal, only for his shot from just outside the penalty area to flash narrowly wide of the post.

Former Spartans loanee Finn Robson incurred the wrath of the Ref following an infringement that prevented what looked to be a promising counter-attack from the hosts as they searched for an opener.

HT: The Spartans 0-0 Forfar Athletic

Blair Henderson was first up to have an opportunity to break the deadlock in the second half however the striker couldn’t keep the half-volley under the crossbar.

Josh Kelly was next up to find his way into the Ref’s jotter for an unhelpful challenge on home skipper Kevin Waugh.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Cat.  Blair Carswell may not have had his busiest opening hour however he had to look as sharp as a tack to make a dynamic double save to prevent Forfar from grabbing what may have been a crucial goal.

A double swap from the home bench saw Brogan Walls and Rory Whittaker replace Lewis Hunter and Mark Stowe.

Play raged on with both sides try not only to beat each other but the blowy conditions making precision passing a bit of a lottery.

With the scoreboard clock turning to 90 minutes, Blair Henderson was inches away from grabbing the advantage, much to the striker’s frustration.

Then, with the game into injury time, Spartans earned a corner kick.  In it came, a couple of heads made unconvincing attempts to steer the ball either direction.  It fortuitously ricocheted into the path of Kieran Watson who put full force of leather on leather to erm, leather the ball into the back of the net.  Cue scenes.

Forfar launched one final attempt to square proceedings.  A corner to the visitors was sent into the heart of the box where visiting keeper McCallum made the pilgrimage from his own area. A bit of goalie on goalie friendly fire ensued with both keepers landing into the back of the net, with Carswell clearly impeded in the process.

And with that, one final blow on the whistle.  Three hard fought points in yet another game between the sides in SPFL 2 decided by a solitary strike.

Under 20s: Adri bags brace against Belters in League Cup win

Friday, September 13th, 2024

Les Atkinson’s Under 20s progressed in the League Cup after a 4-1 victory over Tranent on Friday evening.

After initial confusion over kick-off times, the game got underway with the hosts keen to make amends at the first time of asking following the 7-0 defeat at Ainslie Park in the opening game of the Development League season.

That took a dent in the 19th minute when Spartans took the lead.  James Clare’s free-kick from the right hand side took a deflection off the Tranent defensive wall, deceiving the keeper and landing in the net. It was Clare’s fourth goal in five competitive games this season, a decent return from the defender so far.

It was the only goal of a first half where the visitors weren’t shy at making advances to extend their lead however a relatively resolute home defence ensured the lead at the break was Clare’s solitary success.

HT: Tranent 0-1 Spartans

An eight minute manic period shaped the outcome of the tie played on what could only be described as a bowling green style grass pitch which earned plaudits from the visitors.

First up, Spartans doubled their lead.  Jake Cunningham connected with a corner swung in from the right, his initial header was saved however the skipper swooped like a seagull on chips to fire the rebound high into the net.

That lead was halved in controversial circumstances when Tranent scored direct from a corner.  That alone is not controversial in itself, however added into the mix what looked like a clear infringement on Dan Hart, there was sympathy for the aggrieved on the visiting bench.

However, that two goal lead was restored in the 65th minute.  A stramash inside the Tranent box finally saw the ball hit the back of the net with Adri Anagnostou being credited with the final touch.

Further light appeared between the sides with fifteen minutes to go.  A long throw by James Clare was flicked on by Euan McEvoy-Folland to Logan Brodie who squared it to Anagnostou and there was no dubiety over crediting the striker with his fifth goal of the season.

The win extends the side’s unbeaten record to 13 – on Friday 13th of all days…

Whyte has full focus on Forfar as Spartans return to SPFL action

Thursday, September 12th, 2024

The Spartans return to SPFL 2 action at home on Saturday where they take on Forfar Athletic in the latest round of fixtures.

Douglas Samuel’s side head into the game on the back of a good showing once again against Championship outfit Livingston last week in a game that saw the Gaffer ring the changes for the SPFL Trust Trophy tie.

Games against the Loons last season were all incredibly tight affairs in a quartet of clashes that saw Blair Henderson net in a trio of encounters that saw Spartans shade the tale of the tape with two wins, both at home.  Forfar picked up a win at Station Park with the other being drawn in a rather incredible inaugural league fixture laced with injuries and a hotly disputed goal for the visitors.

With both teams having had the opportunity to suss each other out in Premier Sports group stage earlier in the season – another that saw Henderson claim the winner – they lock horns once again.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s showdown, Bradley Whyte shared his thoughts on the Trust Trophy tussle whilst turning his focus on Forfar.

“There’s been quite a mix of League and various Cup games recently which has required the gaffer to change the team shape or game plans depending on the opposition however we just need to focus our attentions on getting back into the rhythm of winning in the league and getting points on the board.

“If we can build on that first half performance against Livingston and take it into Saturday and build up the momentum required in the league.  We saw with Stenny last season that they got themselves into a winning habit and went on a roll and if we have aspirations to win the league this season, that’s what we have to do.”

Whyte, who picked up last weekend’s Man of the Match award, is aware of the dangers Saturday’s opposition will bring to North Edinburgh on Saturday.

“As we found out last year, Forfar are a really tough team to play against, Their Manager has always got them well drilled and there’s a lot of experience and quality in their side.  It was no different in the cup game in July either.

We just need to go out there and do what we need to do, execute our game plan and look at gaining all three points at full time.”

With three tough games coming up within the next seven days, the former Musselburgh Athletic favourite, where he joined The Spartans from in January 2022, was enthused by quality and depth of squad assembled by the Gaffer for this season’s campaign.

“I thought Brogan (Walls) was excellent for us against Livi.  He didn’t look like he’d been shy of game time and its credit to him for keeping himself match fit.  Mark Stowe too, who has probably not played as much football as he’d have probably liked over the last couple months, made a really positive impact and was unlucky not to score at the end of the first half.

“I think we had one of the best away records in SPFL 2 last season so if we can build on that and maximise our home advantage starting on Saturday, it’ll make it a tough place to come and will have a massive outcome on where we finish at the end of the season.”
