Lowland League | Tapping champing at the bit for University challenge

Friday, August 12th, 2022

Spartans make the trip to Peffermill on Saturday afternoon looking to maintain their unbeaten Lowland League record against Edinburgh University.

One man who will be at the heart of the Spartans defence looking to secure three points and keep a clean sheet is Jordan Tapping.

Talismanic Tapping joined the club from SFPL 2 side Stenhousemuir in the close season and has already established himself an integral part of the defence.

The 26 year old who picked up the Malt and Hops Man of the Match award in midweek against Rangers B said, “It’s been a good start to my time here.  Dougie has a way he wants the side to play and I feel like I’ve slipped in to the position of centre half pretty well.

“Playing alongside the likes of Kev (Waugh) and Calum (Burns) for example has helped me tremendously as they’ve talked me through how we like to play and I think that partnership has grown and developed already.  I feel that when I’m playing alongside them things do run smoothly which makes things more composed and enjoyable.

Tapping is keen to take the performance from last Saturday’s win over Gala and head across the Capital to take on Edinburgh University to make it back to back Lowland League victories.

“I think the way we played last week is how we have set out to play this season and if we put that into practice consistently, we will do well this year.

“I’m sure Edinburgh University will be keen to make like difficult for us and it will be another challenging ninety minutes however if we turn up like we did against Gala, there’s no reason to fear anyone.”

Kick-off at Edinburgh University is at 3pm.  We look forward to our annual outing to sample the legendary home baking by Team MacKinnon.

Under 20s | Ebullient Atkinson excited for new season ahead

Friday, August 12th, 2022

The Spartans Under 20s side kick off their new season tonight and we caught up with Manager Les Atkinson ahead of what is set to be an exciting campaign for his squad of talented teenagers.

It’s Les Atkinson’s 8th season at the helm of the Under 20s.  Another rollercoaster ride of touchline emotions awaits, but the highly respected figure is in an ebullient mood as he enters his 24th year at Spartans.

“I joined the club at the beginning of the Youth Section when we were Flora Stevenson Soccer School as Inverleith Star and subsequently merged with Spartans.

“It’s been a long journey for me but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, I still love the Spartans Family, especially the Under 20s as I enjoy seeing the lads developing, whether it be reaching the 1st Team here or moving on to progress and achieving their goals.

Last season saw the young side throw up some exciting performances and Atkinson is confident that the best is yet to come.

“We work on a three year cycle within the Under 20s set up. Last season we competed very well, both individually and as a team.  I think we have developed and progressed so I’m really excited for this year.

“We’ve signed six players this season who have moved up via the Player Pathway which on paper gives us a large squad however it is a long campaign.  Their involvement will enhance the squad, bolsters the quality and offers real competition for places too.  Whilst some of the new recruits are from pro-youth others are at the younger end of the age spectrum which not only aids their own development but continues to build our succession planning for the future.”

The season begins with a North Edinburgh Derby against Civil Service Strollers, ironically being played at Peffermill 3G on the East side of the Capital on Friday evening at 8pm.  What does the season hold in store for Les and the side?

“Our vision is always about step-by-step improvement in age-grade football and looking to progress from the season before.

“Last year we wanted to finish is a cup final however we didn’t quite manage that but did make it to two semi-finals and ended third in a highly competitive league so I was delighted by what the young team achieved.

“This year it’s about building on this and go one further.  It shouldn’t be a surprise that we will be channeling our energies into looking to win the league, but more importantly this would be a by-product of everything else we do.  If we get to a couple of cup finals and pick up silverware that would naturally be great for the squad morale and reward for their effort too.

“Ultimately for me – and the players know this – it’s getting it them into Dougie’s (Samuel) first team squad or onto a player pathway to achieve the best they can in their careers. We’ve identified a group as ‘high-fliers’ where we think in the next two or three years they could be knocking on the door of Lowland League football. “

Atkinson is the key architect behind the Under 20s ongoing successes on and off the pitch. However the Gaffer was keen to put on record that his stewardship was by no means a one-man show.

“I suppose as a Coach the satisfaction of what I’ve mentioned above isn’t necessarily all mine but it’s more the pleasure of seeing the players achieving their goals and their dreams.  Maybe it is pulling on the senior strip at Spartans or following the footsteps of their team-mates who have gone out to SPFL teams this year.

“It’s really rewarding when you read the match day programme on a Saturday and see a player in the line-up who you remember coming in five years ago or so thinking he could make it.  That’s special for me.

“However, all of this wouldn’t be achievable without a strong team around me too.  I’m lucky to have two great Spartans names undertaking the Coaching alongside me in the shape of Eddie Malone and Chris Anderson.  The pair have a tremendous history on the pitch with the club and it’s been refreshing seeing them bring a wealth of knowledge to the coaching set-up.

“We are lucky too to have 1st Team Coach Derek Riddel join us on Match Days for his support and guidance too. His weekly help both home or away, plus bridging between first team and the 20s is invaluable.

“And of course Gary McClelland continues to offer an incredible level of support to me off the field as Team Secretary ensuring that the magic happens where people often assume it just does.”

David Cran, Managing Director of Mint Box Removals, is of course no stranger to Ainslie Park.

“I signed for Spartans when I was 17 whilst still at High School, back in the days when we trained at Peffermill and played our games on the slope at City Park.  At lot has changed since I left to join the Marines.  When I was doing so, the Academy was in the process of being built and when I returned five years later to come and play for the Amateurs it was an incredible transformation.”

Whilst with the Saturday Amateurs, David was a frequent goal scorer across the years and in 2010, he was the recipient of the Coaches Player of the Year trophy.

“I’ve always enjoyed coming down to Anslie Park.  I’ve now got a 3 year old son Charlie who I’m keen to get involved in the Academy’s Little Dribblers programme too.

“The Spartans brand and community ethos is very important to me and at Mint Box we look to mirror that where we can. As part of our recruitment process we look to integrate youths within the age bracket of the Under 20s squad into the business, show them how the company runs and encourage them to play an active role in making the organisation grow.

“The club means a lot to me which is why I’m more than delighted to be sponsoring the Under 20s this season.”

Under 20s Manager Les Atkinson added, “It’s great to have David and Mint Box on board this season and have them backing the boys by sponsoring the jerseys and the Man of the Match awards.

“This is an exciting year ahead for the team and to have a former Spartan backing us from the off is a tremendous boost.”

Lowland League | Russell double guides Spartans to win over Gala

Saturday, August 6th, 2022

A Man of the Match, brace-scoring performance by Cammy Russell set Spartans on their way to a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers at Ainslie Park.

The Gaffer made changes from Tuesday night’s trip to Dumbarton as he continued to seek valuable points in the packed early stages of what looks to be shaping up to be a tasty league championship this season.

Spartans kicked off and were almost ahead within 30 seconds of the opening whistle. Cammy Russell swooped like a seagull on chips on a loose pass-back however he just couldn’t connect with the ball as he came face to face with the keeper.

It was one-way traffic early doors with Mikey Allan going on a lung-bursting drive and Cammy Russell once again chapping at the door following enterprising play from Jamie Dishington.

Those unconverted opportunities almost bit the home side where the sun doesn’t shine and a ricocheted clearance came back into the path of Blair Carswell and the keeper had to react sharply to tip the ball over the bar.

Rhys Armstrong unleashed a speculative effort from long range, partly wind assisted, and the Gala goalie had to be alert to watch for it dipping as it flew towards him with gusto.

A brace within a small space of time saw Cammy Russell put light between the sides and his first in the 17th minute came from the heart of the defence up to Brad Whyte who fed Russell in space before the striker looked up and let fly from 20 yards.

The second followed in quick fashion as the Gala defence got into a bit of a muddle and the ball breaking to Russell who went on a run to open the opportunity to shoot inside the box and it crept into the bottom corner despite the keeper getting a bit of glove to the ball en route to destination onion bag.

Mikey Allan looked to be enjoying himself out by the standside touchline and he drew warm applause from the Spartan Army faithful with a neat touch, turn and run.

Cammy Russell continued to seek an avenue to collect the match ball however he was to find that third goal elusive and the sides headed for the sheds with Spartans two ahead.

Just two minutes after the break, Spartans further extended their lead. Blair Henderson passing the ball out to Jamie Dishington and as the striker made his way to the penalty area with eager anticipation of reciprocation, Dishington’s cross bizarrely eluded the Gala goalkeeper who was outfoxed/distracted/confused by the effort from the narrowest of angles, it flew over this head and nestled in the net. Scenes!

Henderson’s next selfless involvement saw him set up Mikey Allan however he could only look on agonisingly as his shot went narrowly wide.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Hendo. The talismanic striker towered over his marker in the box to power home a header from a Mikey Allan cross to make it 4-0.

With twenty minutes left, Spartans made a couple of changes, with Calum Burns and Jamie Penker replacing Jordan Tapping and Brad Whyte.

A long range effort from the visitors gave Blair Carswell the chance to get a wee dive on for the cameras.

Two further changes were made, seeing Gregor Woods and Scott Maxwell coming on for the industrious duo of Cammy Russell and Rhys Armstrong.

A clean sheet looked on the cards, however in the 82nd minute, the visitors got a consolation for their efforts courtesy of a headed own goal.

With the game entering into it’s final stages, Ian McFarland was the final Spartan to come off the bench, replacing scorer Henderson.

Lowland League | Back the boys for bouncebackability against the Borderers

Thursday, August 4th, 2022

It’s Spartans ‘Saturdays at Home’ once again this weekend as we welcome Gala Fairydean Rovers to Ainslie Park on the Lowland League duty.

The lads will be looking to bounceback from our midweek disappointment on the road at Dumbarton against Rangers B against a Gala side who have had a positive start to their season, still to taste defeat after four outings.

After a hat-trick of B Teams played in the space of just seven days, Rovers will offer yet another difficult challenge in what will be the 18th fixture between the sides since 2013. Spartans have the upper hand with 13 wins and just three defeats in the head to head.

Last time out was in April, the final fixture of the season, with Under 20s striker Mackenzie Scott coming off the bench to head home the winner.

Harvey Swann suffered a shoulder knock on Tuesday night which will keep him on the treatment table for a spell however Dougie Samuel has an otherwise full squad to select from.

Let’s get behind the boys and give them a massive Spartan Army backing against the Borderers.

Kick-off is at 3pm. Admission £9 Adults, £6 Concessions, Under 16s Free (ID required). The Cafe Bar will be open throughout the afternoon for soft and alcoholic beverages plus the legendary tastebud tickling Bain’s of Stenhouse pies!

Lowland League | Spartans head to the Rock to take on Gers

Monday, August 1st, 2022

The Spartans will complete their hat-trick of B Teams played in a week collection when they take to the road and head to Dumbarton for a Tuesday night clash against Rangers B.

Following a victory over Hearts B and a spirited fightback to draw 2-2 against Celtic B on Saturday, Dougie Samuel’s side head west looking to build on the momentum built across the last two outings.

It’s been an intense start to the campaign for the Ainslie Park side in what already is shaping up to be quite an intriguing Lowland League campaign.

Samuel, who recently notched up 400 appearances as Gaffer which stretches over a decade at the helm, will assess his players at training ahead of selecting his side for the game which kicks off at 7.45pm.

Admission prices are £7 Adults, £3 Concessions / Juveniles
