Under 20s | Atkinson looks to build on momentum in Methil

Friday, August 26th, 2022

It’s SOS Glasgow Development League game week two for Spartans and a trip across the Queensferry Crossing to Bayview Stadium where they take on East Fife, keen to build on their opening day victory against Civil Service Strollers.

Retaining the nucleus of his ‘first year’ squad, Manager Les Atkinson has bolstered the numbers this season and has been impressed by what he has seen so far.

“I’m pleased at the way we have started.  The opening game against Civil a fortnight lay down a marker.  For momentum purposes we’d have preferred to have had a league match last week however we did record a big win against Heriot Watt Uni in a friendly.  It was their first outing so the scoreline doesn’t necessarily give an indication of how well you are playing but that said, I can’t complain too much with 17 goals scored and just 1 conceded across those two games.”

Last season the sides locked horns twice with Spartans coming out on top on both occasions, a 0-4 win on the road, with a 3-1 victory to accompany it back at Ainslie Park however there will be changes in personnel across the board which at age grade football offers challenges in drawing comparisons.

Whilst the Ainslie Park side scored seven in their opening game, it was a reversal of fortunes for the Fifers who conceded the same number against Kelty and will no doubt be keen to bounceback at the next available chance.

Looking ahead to the night in Methil, Atkinson said, “East Fife is a great stadium to play at.  It’s a nice big ground which suits us perfectly.

“It’s a real opportunity on Friday night for some of the squad to shine as we have a few players unavailable.  We have strength and depth now in relation to the positions across the park, which is great and the last couple of weeks have definitely given us an early indication of how well the younger lads are settling in.

“One of the key things now is about integrating the young lads into our style of play and how we play.  Competition for places is strong this seasons too and judging by what I’m seeing at training, everyone is up for the challenge.”

Qualifying Cup | Kev wins Waugh of the Worlds in Nitten sibling showdown

Monday, August 22nd, 2022

A wonder-strike by Sam Jones and a slick opener by Bradley Whyte either side of half time were enough to see Spartans proceed to the next round of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup at the expense of hosts Newtongrange Star.

Former Star man Alan Brown was in the visitors line-up alongside Kevin Waugh who was up against his brother Dylan in the home side.

It was rumoured only Cher could turn back time however on the Spartans bench was former fans favourite Chris Flockhart, brought in as keeper cover.

The recent rain has allowed for some greenery on the surface however another few days of the wet stuff may have been needed to penetrate underfoot with the going most certainly of the ‘firm’ status.

Overhead conditions were blustery, observed by the trees swaying like your old man coming back from the pub at closing time.

Anyway, enough of this nonsense and on with the show!

Mikey Allan was up first to pose a problem with a strong run up the middle and his powerful effort forcing the Nitten keeper to push behind for a corner.  That was then whipped in, Kevin Waugh nipping infront of the goalie and it appeared to be guided behind again by a Defender’s head, but alas, the danger was halted with a goal-kick awarded.

Spartans continued to have the bulk of possession as they sought the opener.  Bradley Whyte’s lob effort was perhaps more in hope than expectation whilst a vocal contingent from the home support ensured the stand-side lino was aware of their consideration for his decision making prowess.

It looked like a stalemate was on the cards come the interval however it was Spartans who were to break the deadlock.

Bradley Whyte cutting across the edge of the box before wrapping his boot round the ball and sending an unstoppable drive beyond the keeper and into the bottom of the bag.

HT: Newtongrange Star 0-1 The Spartans

The opening quarter of the half saw little in the way of notable incident, save for perhaps an exchange of ideas between Kevin Waugh and the Ref over the legitimacy of an aerial challenge the Spartans man was perhaps unlucky to be pinged for.

With almost an hour played, perhaps an early contender for goal of the season paved the way for Spartans to be in the proverbial hat for the next round draw.

Blair Henderson was unlucky, not once, but twice, as bodies were thrown in his path as he tried valiantly to score.  The ball was cleared to just outside the box where Sam Jones caught it on the half volley and slammed it into the top corner.  He stood in suspended animation as the back of the net bulged and his team-mates swooped on him to congratulate a tremendous strike.

It was to be the last of the action for Jones who was withdrawn along with Scott Maxwell, making way for Jamie Penker and Gregor Woods.

A rare venture into the Spartans dangerzone almost came up trumps for the hosts and it was the width of the post that stood between an uneasy closing quarter of an hour and a clean sheet.

Further replacements came with fifteen to go. Cammy Russell and Rhys Armstrong – probably the last two players you’d want to see coming off the bench after running about in the sunshine – came on to replace McFarland and Dishington.

There was to be no additional goals and a rarity in talking points as the game closed out with Spartans shutting up shop at the back and it was another clean sheet for Blair Carswell, with father and former Newtongrange No.1 Alan watching on.

Qualifying Cup | Carswell focused on winning in Nitten

Friday, August 19th, 2022

After a hectic month of Lowland League activity, it’s a switch of silverware attentions for Spartans who head to Mid Lothian for an East of Scotland Qualifying Cup clash against Newtongrange Star.

With the intense start to the league season, the cup tie may see some personnel changes and the Gaffer utilising the squad to get important game time for his players.  Irrespective of who is in the starting line-up, Blair Carswell knows that the eleven men of Spartans will head into the clash totally focused on the win.

“It’s a wee break from league competition and a chance to get to play against different players who you don’t come up against every season. It’ll be good to put ourselves up against difficult opponents from another league and see how we fare against them.”

Star sit bang in the middle of the EOS 1st Division with a finely balanced win / loss balance after four games gone whilst Spartans are 6th in the extended 19 team league after half a dozen outings.

The sides haven’t locked horns often over the years however they did meet on St Andrew’s Day in 2018 in a five-goal Football Nation Qualifying Cup thriller at Ainslie Park which saw Spartans progress with a 3-2 win and the visitors end the match with 9 players in an epic encounter that came to life in the final fifteen minutes.

Carswell was between the sticks in that game however the four year gap between meetings means many personnel changes since.

“Both teams are completely different now with a new set of players on each team so it would be difficult to look to draw comparisons.

“It’ll be a decent test for us without a doubt and it’ll be interesting to see what the difference in standard is like between Lowland League and East of Scotland.

“No doubt Star will be a good side and well organised however we’ll go into the game looking to carry momentum from last week’s win at Edinburgh Uni and set out to be in the hat for the draw for the next round come full-time on Saturday.”

The name Carswell is a familiar one at New Victoria Park, although it’s been a quarter of a century since it was chanted from the touchline.

“I’ve never played at Nitten so it’ll be another ground to tick off on my list.  There will no doubt be some level of split-loyalties for my Dad who will be at the game.  He spent several years there as the Star goalkeeper and it’ll be good for him to return and catch up with some old faces.”

EOS Qualifying Cup – A look back at stars for Spartans & Nitten

Tuesday, August 16th, 2022

It’s a break from League duty this weekend as Spartans head to Newtongrange on East of Scotland Qualifying Cup duty.

A Blair Atkinson brace and a Jamie Dishington strike sending the home side on their way to lifting the trophy in the Final against Camelon the following May.

Prior to this, Newtongrange Star took part in the 2010 Ronnie Swan Trophy mini tournament which also involved Musselburgh Athletic and Spartans Juniors.

Spartans defeated Star on penalties in the Saturday semi-finals, ironically after both goals within the match coming from the spot!  Steven Thomson putting the visitors ahead before Gavin Malin setting up the shoot-out which Spartans won 3-1 and set up a Final the following day against Spartans Juniors.

A year prior to this, Star welcomed the Spartans Juniors for what was a historic fixture between the clubs.  It was Star’s first game as an East Super League side and Spartans making its debut in the Junior ranks.

At the time, the primary reason for Spartans having a team in the Junior leagues was about keeping young players at the club as a number of them in the Under 19s had to leave to find other clubs when they couldn’t get into the first team.

The match, in the South League Cup, ended 3-2 in Star’s favour that day with Adam Perry scoring both Spartans goals.  He must have made an impression as he moved to Star the following season.

Whilst there have been engagements on the park, there are links between the sides by way of personnel.

Dougie Samuel enjoyed two seasons at Nitten (1995/96 & 1996/97) bagging 18 goals in the first and 22 in the second year there, including the winner in the 1997 Skol League Cup Final against Camelon Juniors.

Dougie Samuel

Alan Brown also played in two campaigns (2008/09 & 2010/11) picking up a John Walker East of Scotland Cup winners medal in the process.

Another link between the sides is Spartans No.1 Blair Carswell and his Dad Alan.  Carswell Snr who will be in attendance on Saturday, had a successful career at Nitten, spending eight years there between 1988 & 1996, playing alongside Dougie Samuel in those latter seasons.

In more recent times there have been a series of players including Blair Tolmie, Kevin Motion, Cameron Dawson, Dylan Tait, Alex Imlah, Errol Douglas and George Hunter who have represented both clubs.

Atkinson Given ideal start as Ndlovu hat-trick sets up opening day win for Under 20s

Monday, August 15th, 2022

Les Atkinson’s Under 20s were in seventh heaven as Given Ndlovu’s hat-trick helped guide Spartans to an opening day League victory in a 0-7 win away to Civil Service Strollers.

With a handful of new recruits in the match day squad and the nucleus of last season’s side remaining in situ, one anticipates competition for places in Atkinson’s starting XI will be tougher than ever as the team head into year two of their three-year cycle.

First up saw a trip across town to Peffermill 3G to take on Civil Service Strollers.  Spartans earned the bragging rights last season winning both games however it was the Muirhouse-based outfit who took the honours in a Eastern League Cup tie penalty shoot-out.

The side took to the pitch looking resplendent in their new eco-kit, sponsored by Mint Box Removals, and Captain Sam Coats looked to get his 18th Birthday off to an early boost with a win.

Despite the Caribbean-esque temperatures during the afternoon, the match begun with the top of the onlooking Arthur’s Seat missing with the sweeping haar.

Just fifteen seconds into the game and the home defence didn’t have the foggiest as to how Given Ndlovu managed to steal the ball in the middle of the park and his pass to Mackie Scott saw the striker closed down just before he could dig out a shot whilst under pressure.

Both sides set out to keep the ball and build from the back.  Unfortunately for Spartans keeper Adam Meek he kept the ball for a touch too long in the Referee’s mind and Civil were awarded a free-kick inside the box.  The wall done it’s bit and the scoreboard remained blank.  But not for long.

Midway through the half and Ben Lamont sprung the offside trap, kept his composure and sent the ball beyond the Civil keeper to get his side off to an ideal start.

It was almost a second for Scottish Schoolboy Internationalist Lamont but it was the crossbar that came to the aid of the home side this time round.

With the game edging towards half-time, Mackie Scott raced into the box before being upended by the keeper who misjudged his sliding challenge sending the striker to the ground.  Given Ndlovu stepped up and sent the goalie the wrong way to make it 0-2.

HT: Civil Service Strollers 0-2 Spartans

The Gaffer appeared pleased with the first half showing and he was to feel even more enthused within a minute after the break.

Louis O’Brien’s speculative long-range effort was spilled by the keeper who couldn’t hold it and Mackie Scott swooped on the ball like a seagull on chips to make it 0-3.

Scott, who scored the winner for the Senior side in the final game of last season’s Lowland League campaign, looked hungry for more and it was no surprise when he scored again just a few minutes later.

A long ball over the top and through the middle found Mackie Scott and a delightful first touch and hooked effort wooshed past the stranded keeper to bulge the onion bag to make it 0-4.

Things were to get worse for the home side as Ben Lamont bagged his brace with a neat first touch finish as Spartans looked rampant.

Spartans made a couple of changes with Max Williamson and Jake Cunningham coming on for Aaron Cameron and Callum MacKay.

It was almost the perfect introduction to the game for Williamson who found himself in space but he could only look on agonisingly as his shot went narrowly wide.

Another pair of swaps came in the 65th minute with Rui Black and Cameron Brincker replacing Ben Lamont and Sam Lovie.  The latter having an impressive starting debut for his new team.

The next change was an enforced one as Louis MacLachlan swapped with Josh Laing who took a wee knock and with the points sewn up, there was no point in risking the defender.

It was almost a sixth for Spartans when Ndlovu’s trickery saw his shoot from inside the box but only for the ball to hit the post and roll across the face of the goal and away to safety.

He didn’t have long to wait however to grab his second of the night though as Given Ndlovu raced onto the ball inside the penalty area to hammer the ball beyond the outstretched goalie to make it six.

Then, the proverbial icing on the Captain Coats birthday cake came with a quarter of an hour on the clock with the goal of the night.  A free-kick from just outside the box on the left hand side saw Given Ndlovu size up an opportunity and the Mint Box Removals Man of the Match didn’t disappoint as he beat the wall and the sprawling keeper to round off the scoring.

Lowland League | Blair brace leads Spartans to three points at Peffermill

Saturday, August 13th, 2022

The Spartans came from behind at a sun-soaked Peffermill to overcome Edinburgh University to secure a 1-3 win which saw Dougie Samuel’s side climb to 5th place in the Lowland League table.

After his midweek shift between the sticks and Friday night Under 20s clean sheet, Adam Meek took a deserved rest and Blair Carswell returned to his customary position as guardian of the goals.

The opening quarter of an hour saw Spartans camp inside the home half, shooting towards the goal where some 30 former University players were watching from the mound behind after their pre-match reunion.

When the Ref spotted a Uni player giving Blair Henderson a tug as he looked to get on the end of a move, the visitors were awarded a free-kick. Cammy Russell stepped up but his bendy effort had the keeper scrambling however it went narrowly wide.

With the mercury in the thermometer reaching 20 degrees, it was time for a agreed water break. A time to take on fluids and for the respective coaching teams to offer additional tactics.

It seemed to benefit the Students more than their visitors when they took the lead with ten minutes left of the half.

Spartans almost equalised ahead of returning to the sheds with Rhys Armstrong creating an opportunity for himself inside the box however he could only watch as his shot was semi-stopped by the keeper and hoofed to safety off the line.

HT: Edinburgh University 1-0 The Spartans

It took just two minutes after the break for the equaliser. Cammy Russell was fouled, not for the first time, and the free-kick to the back post found Jordan Tapping who nodding back into the path of Blair Henderson who poked home.

And within eight minutes of second half play, Jamie Dishington showed his acrobatic abilities by sending an overhead kick beyond the keeper into the net to put Spartans ahead.

Spartans had the bit between their teeth as they looked to add to their lead and close the game out. A great run by Jamie Dishington through the middle of the park allowed Cammy Russell to get in position to unleash a shot at goal, only to see it well saved by the keeper.

There was a second water break at the half way stage as the warm weather made for perfect spectating conditions but perhaps a little more draining for the players.

Drama followed in the 71st minute when Brad Whyte was shown a straight red for dissent and Spartans were forced to see out the game with ten men.

The numerical advantage however offer much by way of assistance to the Students and it was Spartans who netted next through Blair Henderson.

Henderson darted into the box between two defenders and was clipped along the way and the only direction of travel was south towards the lush green grassy paddock.

The prolific marksman dusted himself down and sent the keeper the wrong way to ensure three points were heading back to North Edinburgh.
