HM Queen Elizabeth II

Thursday, September 8th, 2022

The Spartans FC would like to express their greatest sadness on this evening’s news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at Balmoral.

Our thoughts are with the Royal Family during these darkest of times.

We await an update from the SFA on a decision surrounding this weekend’s fixtures.

u20s | Spartans get back to winning ways against Welfare

Sunday, September 4th, 2022

Spartans Under 20s progressed into the draw for the East Regional 2nd Round draw after a tricky opening round tie against Whitehill Welfare at Ainslie Park.

After the previous week’s disappointing defeat on the road to East Fife, it was an opportunity for Les Atkinson’s side to bounceback in the search for silverware.

The opening exchanges saw neither keeper troubled then Given Ndlovu had the best chance of the game so far when he saw his shot well saved by the Welfare goalie.

However, it was the former who got the better of the latter after 16 minutes when Ndlovu collected the ball on the edge of the box and whilst it wasn’t the cleanest of connections, the ball found it’s way into the net to give the hosts the lead.

That lead was doubled into the 23rd minute when Ndlovu stepped up to slot home from the penalty spot.

The advantage was halved just four minutes later when some slack defending saw Adam Meek rounded and the ball was lofted high into the net despite the attentions of the back-tracking defender on the post.

Mackie Scott then had an opportunity to restore the two goal advantage shortly after following fine play again by Ndlovu however the striker couldn’t direct his effort home, and his frustrations were clear.

The second half was a few minutes old when they were awarded their second penalty of the evening when the Welfare keeper brought down Ndlovu.  Unfortunately for the goalie it was his face that made the bulk of the impact with the Spartans playmaker’s leg and there was a lengthy break whilst he got cleaned up and a big dollop of vaseline applied.

However, to his credit, the groggy goalie got up and saved Ndlovu’s spot kick and was brave in the rebound, so much so that he won a free-kick in the process.

With twenty minutes left, the two goal lead returned when tremendous pace by Sam Lovie took him into the box and he found Mackie Scott in space six yards out and he put the ball into the empty net.

The celebrations were cut short though when a low drive through a plethora of bodies evaded Meek and it was back to a solitary goal lead.

Changes in the Spartans team saw Mrowczynski, Black and Cameron all come on at the expense of Ndlovu, O’Brien and Cunningham.

The passageway to the second round was secured though with two minutes of the ninety left.  A delightful touch in the box by Mintbox Removals Man of the Match Ben Lamont saw him take the ball down, control and send the ball between defender and goalie to make it 4-2.

Then, with the game deep into injury time, Rui Black collected the ball on the edge of the box, looked up and sent a gloriously curled effort beyond the despairing dive of the Welfare keeper to make it 5-2.

Lowland League | Spartans get back to winning ways against Bo’ness

Tuesday, August 30th, 2022

Second half strikes from Rhys Armstrong and Cammy Russell saw Spartans beat Bo’ness United 2-0 in a solid performance by Dougie Samuel’s side.

Tea-time signing Kieran Watson made the short hop from FC Edinburgh to join his new team-mates and he was on the bench along with Blair Henderson who returned to the side.

As the sun dipped behind the neighbouring flats, Spartans kicked-off, heading towards the Bar which had earlier hosted some 50 supporters for fine Academy hospitality and a great Q&A with Spartans Legends Donal Henretty and Mark Burns.

An early enthusiastic, but unrealistic appeal by the furious Max Christie in the Bo’ness dug out for a penalty was waved aside with no second thought by Referee Graves.

The woodwork was to come to visiting keeper Musa Dibaga’s rescue in the 25th minute when a free-kick to the back post found the lurking Jamie Dishington and his powerful header cannoned off the upright and away to safety.

Allasan Jones was proving to be a bit of a handful and the Bo’ness lad made Blair Carswell work hard to get down low to pull off a fine stop.

Neither side could make that decisive breakthrough and the players headed to the sheds for further instruction from their respective Gaffers.

HT: The Spartans 0-0 Bo’ness United

Dougie Samuel made a change at the break with Alan Brown coming on for Michael Herd.

There was barely enough time to lick those half time lips from the devouring off the Bain’s of Stenhouse pies before Spartans took the lead.

The visitors will look back on how they could have dealt with the ball in a more effective fashion however it was Rhys Armstrong who came up with the goodies and hammered home the opener.

It got even better for the hosts and this time with a bit of lady luck thrown into the bargain too.

Jordan Tapping causing a nuisance in the box and the ball broke to Cammy Russell on the edge of the box who struck the half volley low towards Dibaga. The keeper looked to have it covered however it slipped from his grasp and he could only look on in what must have felt like slow motion as the ball crawled over the line.

Spartans made another change on the hour mark with Kieran Watson making his debut, replacing the industrious Sean Brown.

There was concern for Blair Carswell who required treatment after being unceremoniously flattened in an aerial challenge, but the magic sponge worked wonders and he was back in action shortly after.

Lovely fast flowing football saw a tantalising interaction between Mikey Allan, Cammy Russell and it was a decent stop by Dibaga to deny Sam Jones.

Kieran Watson wasn’t long in getting his name known, or indeed taken, when just 14 minutes into his Spartans career who picked up a booking for a foul.

Bo’ness looked for a way through the home defence to set up a grandstand finale but there was simply no way through the rock solid back division.

Spartans made two further swaps before the end of the game, with Ian McFarland replacing Rhys Armstrong whilst Blair Henderson came on for Cammy Russell.

Lowland League | Late goal is cruel blow for Spartans

Monday, August 29th, 2022

There had been much said prior to Saturday’s Lowland League game of the day however in his programme notes, Spartans Gaffer Dougie Samuel emphasised that nothing would be decided in this proverbial six pointer against East Kilbride.

With Brad Whyte suspended and Blair Henderson attending his sister’s wedding, the hosts went into this crunch clash looking to take the game to the visitors and it didn’t take long before Cammy Russell started to torment the tourists.

A couple of Spartans free-kicks were awarded in quick succession, both after fouls on Russell.  The second of these was floated into the box and unfortunately for Jordan Tapping, he was adjudged to have used his physique to impede the goalkeeper who spilled the ball under pressure.

At the other end, Reece McGuire went down in the box under pressure from Michael Herd. Claims for a penalty were adventurous at best as Referee Sean Duff waved play on.

There were collective heads in hands as Sean Brown had his shot inside the box saved then Cammy Russell was closed down fast and his rebounded effort blocked as Spartans pressed for an opener.

Cammy Russell produced another energetic run into the box before unleashing a powerful drive that was well stopped by Kilby keeper Curtis Lyle.

Moments later, a tremendous clearance over the bar from Dylan MacDonald at his near post denied Spartans another opportunity.  He won’t get the credit though as the officials agreed on a goal kick.

Then, in the 26th minute, the deadline was broken. Jamie Dishington working his way to send a low ball across the box to find Sean Brown who laid off into the path of Rhys Armstrong who put Spartans into a well deserved lead with an excellent finish inside the box.

Robust defending by Mikey Allan at the back ensured Spartans kept their lead until the interval.  First it was a track-back and shoulder to shoulder challenge that denied McGuire an opportunity to race in on goal, then a telling tackle on the stand-side touchline which drew warm applause from the home support but a subsequently foul that saw yet another yellow shown.

Half Time: The Spartans 1-0 East Kilbride

There was a squeekybum moment just after the break when a long kick from the opposition keeper called his glove-wearing counterpart into action as it was misjudged by the home defence and Blair Carswell had to look sharp to come off his line to Cameron Elliot.

Just nine minutes into the half and it was all square.  Against the run of play, the visitors finding the net with arguably their first shot on target. The ball headed off the crossbar and it was Cameron Elliott who was quickest to respond and found the net.

Cameron Russell was called upon to take a free-kick 20 yards out however this was to be well saved by Lyle.

Just after the hour mark, the pendulum swung in East Kilbride’s favour. The corner kick headed towards Blair Carswell however with a Kilby defender obstructing his view, he could only parry and it was returned into the net to give the visitors the lead.

Then, with a quarter of an hour to go, it was all square again.  Good link up play between Cammy Russell and Jamie Dishington saw the latter thread the ball towards Rhys Armstrong who composed himself before sending his shot into the top corner.

In the 80tn minute, Spartans made a hat-trick of changes, with Jamie Penker, Calum Burns & Alan Brown coming on for Sean Brown, Mikey Allan and Ian McFarland.

There was a half chance shortly after for the advancing Sam Jones but his shot from 20 yards, going got accuracy over power, just couldn’t beat the keeper.

As play entered its final stages, the ball hit off Dylan MacDonald’s head in midfield, quite how much he knew about it is a mystery however he then outjumped Kevin Waugh and his nod was then sent into the path of Ronan Hughes who let fly with an unstoppable drive to steal the points at the death.

Full Time: The Spartans 2-3 East Kilbride

Spartans: Carswell, Herd, Allan (Burns 80′), Waugh, Tapping, Dishington, Armstrong, McFarland (C) (A. Brown 80′), S. Brown (Penker 80′), Jones, Russell.  Unused subs: Maxwell, Woods, Ndlovu, Meek.

Under 20s: Youngster felled by Fifers in disappointing defeat

Saturday, August 27th, 2022

A brace of goals either side of the interval saw Spartans lose 4-0 on on the road at East Fife in Friday night’s Development League match at Bayview.

After an arduous hour and a half bus trip from Ainslie Park to Methil, a leg weary Spartans side arrived at the home of East Fife looking to build on their decent start to the year under the stewardship of Les Atkinson.

A suite of changes in the Spartans line-up from last time out saw opportunities for a handful of the new recruits in their inaugural year of the ‘step-up’ from youth football.

The hosts may have had a poor start to their campaign but they were first out the traps as the red sky set over Bayview. Adam Meek called into action to produce a save to keep the Fifers at bay.

It took almost 25 minutes before we had the first real opportunity of the match. Given Ndlovu turning his man on the touchline before setting off towards the box, but his low cross had a bit too much air in it and Mackie Scott couldn’t connect.

Another flowing Spartans attack with Elliott Miller doing well up the line despite his marker nipping away at his ankles. His cross finally coming into the path of Mackie Scott but his effort was saved.

34 minutes on the clock and the home side took the lead. As Spartans made their way back after an attack of their home, it was a Fife flyer who made excellent ground and his cross was headed home from six yards.

Spartans looked to get back on level terms immediately and Callum McKay rose above the plethora of bodies inside a busy penalty box but his header went over the bar from a corner.

The Fifers were looking dangerous once again and you’ll be unlikely to see a better goal at Bayview all season as a long range effort sailed beyond Adam Meek, hit the inside of both posts and nestled in the net.

Half Time: East Fife 2-0 Spartans

Harvey Cummings was introduced at the break to offer some fresh legs however Atkinson was then called upon to make an enforced change when Aaron Cameron had to withdraw after picking up a knock, replaced by Cameron Brincker.

Any hopes of a Spartans comeback were dashed as the home side netted twice in as many minutes. The first from the fifth of a series of successive corners then a deft flick at the near post which effectively killed the contest.

Probably not the 18th Birthday night out he was looking for but on the hour mark, Max Williamson came on for Rui Black.

Adam Meek done well with a flying fingertip save to deny the Fifers a fifth, a stop that drew warm applause from the crowd.

Spartans still pressed and Max Williamson’s corner saw Chris Inglis rise and win the header, but the effort was blocked on the line.

One final change for the tourists saw Harry Cuister replace captain Coats with ten minutes left on the clock.
