Scottish Cup | Spartans lose out at Linlithgow

Monday, October 24th, 2022

The Spartans exited the Scottish Cup following a disappointed defeat on the road at Linlithgow Rose at the weekend.

Both sides came into the 2nd Round tie with momentum behind them with a winning streak each offering them hope and expectation in equal measure.

The warm-up saw the rain fall in Linlithgow offering the grassy knoll a decent soaking making going good to soft come kick-off in front of a decent crowd inside the Prestonfield arena.

It was the hosts who came out of the blocks first and Malt and Hops Man of the Match Kevin Waugh had to look lively to clear up a couple of corners.

Rhys Armstrong’s ankles were offered some early treatment as the playmaker was given a welcome he’d have preferred not to have received on more than one occasion causing the ref to get his whistle wet in the opening stages.

It was a frustrating start to the game though as both teams looked to carve out openings and the conditions being as much of a leveller than the quality of play itself.

Cammy Russell let fly from 25 yards as Spartans pressed hard with the ball ruffling the net causing a bit of confusion in the stand with the angle offering some of the away support unconverted hope that it had slid in on the other side of the post.

The hosts took the lead with 10 minutes left til the break.  A long range effort dipped as it flew through a bevvy of bodies and it skited across the slippery surface to evade the outstretched Blair Carswell to nestle in the bottom corner.

In the early moments of added on time, the hosts were to double their lead, changing the mood music of the half time team talks for both Gaffers.

Spartans uphill task to remain in the tournament became one of a Himilyan proportion as within seven minutes of the interval, they scored their third.

A chance for Spartans to get back into the game fell to Jamie Dishington following the ball breaking to him after Blair Henderson was challenged in the box.  Dishington’s shot was well saved and a corner was the scant consolation on offer for his efforts.

Dougie Samuel rung the changes with Sean Brown and Bradley Whyte coming on for Sam Jones and Ian McFarland.

Sean Brown headed up the paddock to join up with Blair Henderson as the pair looked to forge open an opportunity however the Rose defence continued to deny the pair.

Then Michael Herd came off the bench to mark his 200th appearance for the Club at the expense of Gregor Woods.

Bradley Whyte made a dart into the box and after lobbing the keeper he was clattered by the stopper but the shot went wide and the Spartans lad was left counting or rubbing his crown jewels after being caught by the toes of the Rose goalie’s boot.  A ‘dull one’.

Insult then followed injury after another long ranger weaved through a plethora of players and hit the away net to put the tie to bed.

Under 20s | Spartans KO’d by OG in close encounter of the frustrating kind

Saturday, October 22nd, 2022

Spartans Under 20s lost out to OG Broomhill in the Development League in a frustrating evening at Ainslie Park.

The opening two minutes of the game were played at a frantic pace, with the visitors enjoying some time in the Spartans half whilst at the other end, Seb Mrowczynski sent an inviting ball across the face of the goal and moments later Ben Lamont looked on as his shot beat the goalie and his near post.

With nothing much to pick between the sides on league performance to date, the game wasn’t likely to be a goal-a-thon and both sides hunting for a way through to break the deadlock.

Mackie Scott was chasing everything like a demented ferret, at one point almost losing his shorts as his marker had a clump of one leg in his hand during one challenge. A full moon over Pilton narrowly avoided!

Sam Lovie was looking composed at the back for Spartans, sooking up the attacks and sending the ball back to where it came from as OG continued to threaten.

Another man at the back, Chris Inglis, used his experience to win a free-kick just on the edge of his own box to bring a moment of calm to proceedings.

A scramble in the OG Broomhill box saw a half effort from Seb Mrowczynski appear to hit the base of the post. It seemed to surprise everyone and it landed into the welcoming arms of the keeper.

With ten minutes left til the interval, the visitors capitalised on a rare defensive faux-pas and the ball was poked between defender and keeper to roll effortlessly into the empty net.

The home defence looked shell-shocked and almost lost another moments after and then had to rely on a tremendous diving stop by Miko Komocki who reacted to a cheeky free-kick and pushed the ball over the bar at his near post.

HT Spartans 0-1 OG Broomhill

Spartans set off from the outset of the second half seeking the equaliser. They started strongly, but maybe too literally as Given Ndlovu was pinged for a foul.

There was an early second half replacement for Spartans as Rui Black swapped with Cameron Brincker.

A long range effort from Ben Lamont saw the keeper get down low and punch away to safety.

At the back, the Spartans defence was still having to work hard to keep the deficit to a single strike and Chris Inglis was required to use his experience to shepherd the ball out of play for a goal kick.

Seb Mrowczynski could only watch on as his header cleared the bar then Given Ndlovu couldn’t get the shot out from under his feet as the equaliser continued to remain elusive.

Midway through the half, Les Atkinson made a further brace of replacements with Elliott Miller and Aaron Cameron on for Mrowczynski and Ndlovu.

The change was to an effective one as just seven minutes later, Spartans were finally on level terms. Aaron Cameron slid in bravely from six yards to nudge the ball beyond the keeper into the net.

It was almost a second shortly after when Rui Black won the ball in midfield, he sent Elliott Miller for a run to set up a cross for Ben Lamont had his shot saved.

Unfortunately for the Ainslie Park side, the next goalmouth interaction was at the other end and the pendulum once again swung in the favour of the visitors who nipped in front of Miko Komocki and tapped the ball into the net.

Spartans threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Broomhill, including keeper Komocki who came up for a pair of last gasp corners in a valiant effort to salvage a point.

Alas, it wasn’t to be and after five minutes of added time, the Ref blew his whistle for the final time.

Scottish Cup | Armstrong welcomes wrestle with Rose in ‘the Scottish’

Tuesday, October 18th, 2022

One exciting addition to the Spartans stables this season has been the industrious playmaker Rhys Armstrong. The talented midfielder, who joined in the summer break, has eased himself into Dougie Samuel’s squad and is relishing Saturday’s Scottish Cup trip to Linlithgow Rose.

Spartans head into the game sitting in fourth spot in the Lowland League and on the back of five victories and a quadruple of consecutive clean sheets in the process.

Ahead of the visit to Prestonfield Stadium, Armstrong was in a confident mood, “We’ll be looking to take that the momentum over the last few weeks into Saturday’s game at Linlithgow and build on what has been a good run for the lads.

“Whilst it’s no secret that the League continues to remain our priority, last week was a solid performance in the South Challenge Cup and obviously the Scottish Cup offers that special place in anyone’s career, such is the tournament’s history.

“The boys have been building confidence in each and every game. Our defence has gelled well together and it’s great to see the Cat (Blair Carswell) continue with the clean sheets too.

“We’re working hard on the training ground each week and this is paying off on a Saturday and hopefully we can take this into Saturday’s game at Linlithgow.

Armstrong, who has found the net 5 times himself this season so far including last week’s win against Berwick Rangers, is one of many players who have scored goals and the talented playmaker is pleased to see that these have been divided across the team.

“It’s always good when the whole team are capable of scoring and we’re not just relying on the likes of Hendo (Blair Henderson) or Sean (Brown) to knock them in for us.

Saturday will be the 71st appearance in the competition for Spartans – their 40th on the road. The sides have met once before – way back in 2007/08, with Rose coming out on top although it is fair to say there’s been a bit of water under the proverbial bridge since for both sides.

As cliches go, the perennial romance of the cup is always a treat for players – an opportunity which often throws up the chance to play different teams from other leagues.

It’s a tasty tie that Armstrong is setting his crosshairs on: “For me, matches in the Scottish Cup are unique. They are one-off games, almost like each tie is your cup final. It’s a big thing for any player to progress as far as you can in it and hope you can get drawn against one the big clubs.

“It’ll certainly be a different game in terms of what we are probably used to in the Lowland League but we’ll work on our game plan and look forward to the match on Saturday.”

Under 20s | Spot-on Spartans earn win in comeback cracker

Monday, October 17th, 2022

Les Atkinson’s Under 20s moved up to 3rd place in the Development League Conference A with a dramatic comeback in a five goal thriller at Meadowbank.

It was Spartans first visit to the new arena with Atkinson looking for an immediate reaction following the previous week’s disappointing defeat to Albion Rovers.

It didn’t look overly likely to be the reaction the Gaffer was looking for when after just 16 minutes on the clock, the hosts took the lead. A long floated ball from the right was headed goal-wards by a City FC Edinburgh, attacker and it looped over Adam Meek and into the back of the net.

It didn’t take long for that lead to double and just four minutes later, a decent delivery into the box from a free kick out wide saw the home striker with the freedom of Meadowbank and he duly headed home from 8 yards.

The home side had as much hunger in their bellies as the neighbouring McD’s diners and they should have made it three on the half hour mark.

Two corners in a row saw Meek make a great save from a header low down to his right, before the second was headed just over.

Spartans however weren’t up for playing second fiddle to the junior citizens. A free kick from Max Williamson on the left found Ben Lamont and his finish nestled into the bottom corner.

HT: FC Edinburgh 2-1 Spartans

Whatever was said in the Spartans sheds at the break is likely to remain classified but it had the desired impact after the sides returned from the warmth of the dressing room.

A short corner from the right was swung into the box and found Ben Lamont who watched on as his long range header brought about a great save from the home keeper.

Then, just before the hour mark, things were all square. A telling pass down the left flank saw Ben Lamont send the ball across the box and Mackie Scott duly dispatched home to make it 2-2.

With the winner up for grabs and the Edinburgh derby bragging rights in the balance, both sides pressed however neither goalkeeper particularly troubled.

That was until the game entered it’s final ten minutes.

Spartans went on the move and Sam Coats was upended in the box leaving the Ref with no qualms over awarded the spot kick. Up stepped Given Ndlovu who sent the keeper the wrong way to net his 8th goal of the season and give his side the lead for the first time on the night.

Adam Meek was called up to maintain that slender advantage as he dealt with a free header drawing warm applause from the Spartans faithful in the ‘stand’.

As the sands of time ebbed away, Spartans were awarded a corner which Given Ndlovu showed maturity and clever game management by keeping it by the flag and with that, the game was done and three points headed back down the road to Ainslie Park.

And finally… A doff of the cap to Aaron Cameron who made a mad dash to Meadowbank for a spot on the bench after not long landing in Edinburgh following a trip to Florence to watch Hearts in Europe.

Challenge Cup | Slick Spartans beat Borderers

Sunday, October 16th, 2022

A match official delayed due to traffic, a sub lino in the stand, three goals and a red card in an eventful encounter at Ainslie Park as Spartans progressed in the South Challenge Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Berwick Rangers.

Edinburgh – built on seven hills and roadworks on all of them – saw one match official stuck in traffic en route to Ainslie Park.

Impressively, within the 188 crowd, a practising official was in the stand and after answering a call of duty, the game got underway after a twenty minute delay.

When play finally got underway, it was the visitors who had the first opportunity at goal, but Allan’s shot was well saved by Carswell.

Next up saw Jamie Penker with a half chance, but his header didn’t have the power to trouble the Berwick keeper and was easily gathered.

Sean Brown was next to try his luck after robbing a defender at the edge of the box, but his shot was straight at the keeper.

Whilst there was roadblocks for one official to attend with, it was becoming one-way traffic on the park and Mikey Allan was next up to watch his effort saved at the near post and put behind for a corner.

Finally, Spartans got the breakthrough. A thunderous half-volley from Rhys Armstrong left the goalkeeper with nothing much to do other than collect the ball from the back of the net.

HT: The Spartans 1-0 Berwick Rangers

The visitors had a free kick that was sent into the home box and it required a strong fist from Blair Carswell to put the ball to safety.

A triple substitution for Spartans saw Woods, Whyte and Penker replaced by Herd, Russell and Henderson.

A mistake in the Berwick defence saw Sean Brown pass to Blair Henderson who had his shot saved, however the ball ended up at the feet of Sean Brown and he had the easiest of tasks in putting the rebound past Antell to double the lead.

Then, with the game entering into its final stages, Spartans were awarded a spot kick. Cammy Russell’s dash up the park saw his absolutely clattered by a late and unhelpful challenge earning Spartans the penalty and the Berwick defender a yellow card at the same time.

Up stepped Blair Henderson who tucked away the penalty with consummate ease.

Chris Inglis then came on for Malt and Hops Man of the Match Sean Brown.

It truly was a case of why does it always rain on Berwick when a Red Card was shown to Travis in the final stages of the match after an elbow to Cammy Russell’s napper in an aerial challenge.
