Lowland League | Clean sheet gained in Gretna win

Monday, November 7th, 2022

The Spartans made it seven wins on the bounce with a solid second half display that saw them maintain another clean sheet in a 0-3 victory at Raydale Park.

Sean Brown paired up with striking partner Blair Henderson from the off whilst there was a welcome return to the match day squad for Gavin Morrison following his long lay-off on the treatment table.

Brown was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet early on however his effort was ruled offside and the hosts breathed an early sigh of relief.

There was to be an unscheduled swap in Spartans personnel when Michael Herd limped off after just 12 minutes on the clock to be replaced by Gregor Woods.

Fine play in midfield by Spartans saw Bradley Whyte whip in a cross, but the header by Sean Brown didn’t muster enough oomph and was gathered by Alasdair Adams between the Gretna sticks.

The first half was certainly one for the purists and with previous fixtures between the sides offering interesting talking points, this affair failed to hit the headlines.

A free kick for Spartans from the edge of the box was punched behind for a corner by the alert Adams. The resultant corner saw Sean Brown head narrowly wide.

As the game trundled towards half time, there was a shout for a penalty from the hosts when Blair Carswell came out to make a last ditch tackle after a slack pass-back put the goalie under pressure.  The Spartans keeper collided with the Gretna player on the edge of the six yard box but the Ref rightly deciding that the ball was won fairly and a coming together of players wasn’t enough to merit a spot-kick.

And with that, it was time to head to the sheds for reflection.

Just seven minutes after the break, Spartans took the lead.  A corner from Rhys Armstrong was nodded away but only as far as Mikey Allan who was lurking in space at the edge of the box.  The Defender won’t have hit many as sweetly in his career and his right footed volley bulged the onion bag offering the keeper no chance.

A crisp strike by Jamie Dishington saw Adams scramble to get down low to push behind for another Spartans corner as Dougie Samuel’s side pressed to put further light between the sides.

Spartans made a change with Cammy Russell coming on for the industrious Sean Brown.

The tourists then doubled their lead.  A long kick up the park from Blair Carswell, saw Jamie Dishington use his strength to beat his man before playing in Rhys Armstrong.  The playmaker showed a slick pair of heels to whizz past the defender to glide along the bye-line before outfoxing another and slip the ball under the keeper to net his third goal in as many games.

Spartans made further changes with Gavin Morrison making his long awaited debut along with veteran Alan Brown and it was a chance for the Gaffer to rest up Blair Henderson and Rhys Armstrong.

The outcome of the match was then secured when Spartans grabbed their third.  Gavin Morrison reacting in the middle of the park to pick up a loose ball and he sent it into the path of Cammy Russell who still had work to do before sending his a low shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

Lowland League | Henderson looking to get in the frame for goals at Gretna

Friday, November 4th, 2022

Spartans make the trip down the M74 to Dumfriesshire on Saturday where they face Gretna FC 2008 in the latest adventures in the Lowland League.

Both teams were in action midweek, with Dougie Samuel’s side recording a 3-2 win at home against Berwick Rangers whilst hosts Gretna left Broadwood 24 hours later with a point following a 2-2 draw against OG Broomhill.

Tuesday night’s five goal thriller against Berwick saw Spartans make it six games unbeaten on the bounce in the league.  Blair Henderson bagged a brace from the penalty spot to guide the team to the win however he knows that Saturday’s will be yet another difficult encounter against a somewhat rejuvenated Gretna side.

Speaking ahead of the 200 mile round trip, Henderson said, “It’ll be a tough game for sure.  Gretna have been going well and are a completely different team from last season.  It’s a big game for us – and for them – but hopefully we’ll come out on top.”

The striker has netted a brace and hat-trick in the last two outings against Saturday’s opponents whilst Spartans have won 14 out of the sixteen Lowland League encounters against the Raydale Park outfit.

Henderson remains level headed and knows that whilst the stats sound good on paper, it’s what happens on the park in the next game that really counts.

“I don’t think we can read too much into what’s happened last year or beyond that too, especially with Gretna who have changed a lot in terms of personnel since we last played them.

“This league is unpredictable.  Gretna were on a good run not so long ago and we currently see ourselves with the momentum behind us. These things can change quickly and hopefully we’re on the right end of the result come Saturday night.”

The hit-man however has netted in four of the clubs last six outings and is hot on the heels of Jamie Dishington at the top of the Club’s leaderboard in the league, with just four goals separating the two players.

Will Henderson add to his tally of 38 and narrow that gap even further?

“We’ll see.  It won’t be long until that lead’s gone anyway!  Dish knows as well as me that I’m coming for him so it’ll be fine.

“At the end of the day though it’s about winning games and getting the three points.  Naturally I’d rather it was me who scored the goals, but we’re on a good run and we just have to keep it going and we’ve a good squad who have already shown we can share the goalscoring amongst us.

“It’s a tough league and as you can see from the table, there’s so many clubs who are on and around the same number of points we need to win the game.”

Kick-off at Raydale Park is at 3.00pm.

Lowland League | Blair pair of pens enough to beat Berwick in five goal thriller

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022

The Spartans made it six Lowland League victories on the bounce however they were made to work hard for their three points against a stubborn Berwick Rangers side who came a post-width away from an equaliser deep into second half injury time.

Sam Jones and Gregor Woods came into the starting line-up as Spartans Gaffer Dougie Samuel made a pair of swaps from Saturday’s victory over Caledonian Braves.  Ian McFarland rested due to a knock, whilst Michael Herd took up a spot on the bench.

The game kicked on in busy fashion for the home side against the men from beyond the border who were sporting their bright away jerseys in the colours of Northumbria.

An early Spartans corner was won by Mikey Allan who got on the end of Rhys Armstrong’s delivery but his header was narrowly wide.

Then there was a half chance as Cammy Russell latched onto the ball after it evaded the leap from the defender however there was just too much gas on his pass for Blair Henderson to catch the ball in the box to connect.

Against the run of play, indeed, with their first real adventure beyond the halfway line, Berwick opened the scoring.  A cross low into the six yard box saw Cameron Graham and Blair Carswell collide as the ball hit the back of the net and the goal was awarded.  After treatment, both players were back on their feet for the restart.

Spartans rallied and were pressing at every opportunity for the equaliser.  A Mikey Allan header went narrowly wide then Blair Henderson was blocked just as he pulled the peg back to shoot from six yards.

The equaliser, as elusive as it seemed, came on the half hour mark.  A Cammy Russell long throw into the box caused some confusion, not only for the defence but also for identifying the scorer at the time!

The ball broke to Jamie Dishington deep inside the penalty area and his attempt may well have made it beyond the Berwick keeper however it was aided by the head of Rhys Armstrong who fortuitously got his napper in the road of the shot and it bounce off his bonce, outfoxed the goalie and trundled into the net.

Spartans had a shout for a penalty after a Cammy Russell corner appeared to strike the arm of a Berwick defender in the middle of the eighteen yard area however despite the flailing of frustrated Spartans arms, Referee Alex Shepherd was not up for pointing to the spot.

The man in the middle though was left in little doubt a minute before the break when Rhys Armstrong went on a run from the half way line into the box and as he cut inside towards goal, he was brought to the ground.  Blair Henderson stepped up and calmly slotted home.

HT: Spartans 2-1 Berwick Rangers

Seasonal fireworks could be heard around North Edinburgh as the second half got under way however there was no sign of the Pilton Sniper as Lewis Barr fell down in the box as he and Mikey Allan awaited a Spartans corner.  Referee Shepherd pulled the players aside for a chat and note that he’d been keeping an eye out in future.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Bradley Whyte was booked for an aerial challenge that it’s fair to say he didn’t agree with and he was joined in this state of confusion by the home bench.

Play then made its way back into the Berwick box.  A corner for Spartans.  Yes, dear reader, you are one step ahead of your scribe in the ‘What happened next?’ quiz.

As the ball was swung in, the eagle eyed man in the middle – ok, it was hard to miss – saw Lewis Barr manhandle Mikey Allan on the edge of the six yard box and it was a second spot kick of the night for Blair Henderson to step up and send home with consummate ease.

A two goal window and momentum behind them saw Spartans on the ascendency however they were brought back to reality when a Berwick effort hit the crossbar for a bit of a wakey wakey moment.

Sean Brown was then introduce for Blair Henderson who was roundly applauded for his efforts as he made his was for a sit down in the huts.

Cammy Russell then cut back inside from his run to unleash a shot that looked destined for the top corner but for a super save from Calum Antell.

Whatever riled the Berwick gaffer saw him yellow carded but instead of taking his punishment on the nose like a naughty puppy, his applauding of the decision saw him see Red and off he trundled to watch the match from beyond the technical area.

A brace of replacements with ten minutes to go saw Josh Laing and Alan Brown come on for Rhys Armstrong and Gregor Woods.

With just four minutes left, things got just that little bit hairy as Berwick were awarded – and converted from the spot.  A ball into the box from out wide saw Liam Buchanan tumble over a Mikey Allan toe and the spot kick was despatched much to the joy of the small band of Berwick fans in the ground.

If the penalty was nerve-wracking, the long ball beyond the Spartans defence that then saw Lewis Barr almost turn villain into hero but for the width of the post as his shot flew past Blair Carswell who came off his line, hit the woodwork and was hoofed to safety by Sam Jones.

Squeekybumtime personified.  Then the final whistle blew.

Lowland League | Brad brace sees Spartans all Whyte on the night against Braves

Sunday, October 30th, 2022

The Spartans moved up to third place in the Lowland League after their first victory over Caledonian Braves at the fourth time of asking in a game of proverbial two halves at Alliance Park.

It was a blustery, wet afternoon out west with the autumnal conditions overhead matched by the blanket of fallen leaves on the astro paddock as Spartans got the game underway.

There was an early welcome back for Rhys Armstrong as the playmaker was pulled to the ground as Spartans launched their first attack from the off.

A couple of corners for the visitors after some kamikaze defending from the Braves saw Blair Henderson make a nuisance of himself in the box. His first header was put behind however the home side somehow managed to clear to keep the scoreboard intact.

Another set-piece saw Mikey Allan leap and head towards goal, only for it to have a little bit too much bounce and it pinged over the bar.

Eventually, the tourists got their noses in front after 14 minutes. Another corner kick was poorly defended and this time Bradley Whyte headed into the roof of the net despite the attentions of the Goalie and Defender on the line.

Rhys Armstrong came close as did Blair Henderson as Spartans looked more than keen to erase last weekend’s cup display firmly from their mental lockers.

The lead doubled after 25 minutes when, yup – another corner – came into the heart of the Braves box and an unconventional effort from Bradley Whyte saw him shoot from hip and it took all and sundry by surprise.

Mikey Allan then went into a goalmouth challenge in typically brave fashion, unlucky not to score and then thankful following a Blair Henderson inspection, to have the same number of teeth as he had prior to the clash.

Ian McFarland was forced to withdraw after taking a knock and he was replaced by Sam Jones on the half hour mark.

Cammy Russell then looked to have been taken out on the edge of the box as he latched on to the through ball however there was nothing to see in the eyes of the officials as play raged on.

With half time moments away, Spartans further extended their lead. Rhys Armstrong with the perfect response to the close attentions he’d been receiving throughout as he slid the ball beyond the advancing keeper and into the net.

Spartans were three goals to the good and cruising. So much so that Jane McDonald wouldn’t have looked out of place in the squad.

Half Time: Caledonian Braves 0-3 The Spartans

From cruise control to out of control in five opening second half minutes saw the Braves reduce the deficit to a solitary goal in the most un-Spartans of fashions.

Around 60 seconds after the re-start, some faffing around on the edge of their own box saw the ball robbed and the ball was rolled home.

Then, from a Spartans corner, the ball broke and a quick lob across the park saw a one-on-one which resulted in the second Braves goal in just five chaotic minutes.

Cammy Russell came close to putting more light between the sides as his shot from out wide grazed the face of the crossbar and whizzed out of play.

Some agricultural challenges started to creep into the game as Braves sought an equaliser and Spartans hung on to a lead they looked unlikely to be anywhere near surrendering at the break.

Play swept from end to end, the leaves followed in the wind. The subs shivered in the shelters which had been mainly robbed of their perspex backing some time ago.

Then, with ten minutes left on the clock, Spartans found what was looking to be that elusive fourth goal. Jamie Dishington sending a cross into the box that the keeper failed to stop and the ball landed into the path of Blair Henderson who stooped low to head into the empty net.

It was his final part in the game as he was replaced by Sean Brown along with Rhys Armstrong who made way for Gregor Woods.

There was almost a hearts in mouth moment at the death as Braves launched another attack and when the whistle blew following a challenge in the box, the fears turned to cheers when the far-side lino was stood flag aloft for offside.

Lowland League | Penker tailored Spartans ploy to bounceback against the Braves

Friday, October 28th, 2022

A week, they say, is a long time in politics, however in the cut and thrust of non-league football, the highs and the lows of last week’s exit on the Road to Hampden journey are firmly parked in the mind of Jamie Penker.

Both sides exited the Scottish Cup last week and meet at Alliance Park where they go head to head on League duty as Spartans aim to maintain their momentum, going into the clash on a four match unbeaten run.

The midfielder, who signed in the summer from Stirling University, is keen to ensure Spartans continue where they left off in the Lowland League three weeks ago when they head west on Saturday to take on Caledonian Braves.

“I think it’s fair to say that we will be using last week’s performance as the fuel to start from the off against Braves.  It was a disappointing outcome and obviously things didn’t pan out the way we wanted them to go.

“We’ve had two good sessions at training in order to regroup and regather and our full focus now goes into our league campaign and channel in on what we want to achieve come the end of the season.”

As cliches go, one swallow doesn’t make a summer and it’s equally correct, Penker notes, that one defeat in six outings doesn’t a crisis make.

“Our form in the league recently has been really good.  We’ve been keeping clean sheets and not shy when it comes to scoring goals either.  The whole squad have contributed well to these results and it’s also great to see many of the lads coming back from injury too, so hopefully this can be the start of another ‘mini-run’ if you want to call it that.

“Every Saturday you go into the game hungry for that win and secure three points each time.  It’s important therefore that we turn up with the right attitude.  We know it’ll be a tricky game as it always is at their place however we go into it confident with the quality we have in our squad and look to take the points.

Tomorrow’s match at Alliance Park is at 3pm.  Admission is free (or optional donation at the gate).
