Lowland League | Spartans frozen out by cold Hearts

Thursday, December 8th, 2022

The Spartans recorded their third Lowland League draw on the bounce in a frustrating ninety minutes in baltic conditions at Rosewell against Hearts B.

With temperatures hovering around the zero mark come kick-off, one wonders what several of the home squad thought when they arrived merely hours earlier from the Club’s tour in warmer climes of Marbella!

Spartans started off the livelier of the two sides and forced a couple of early corners which failed to turn into clear opportunities.

As the grass began to glisten in patches where the evening frost stated to lie, the bounce of the ball and ability for slick passing along the ground fizzled out as both sides tried their best to get maintain possession.

A shout for a spot-kick from Blair Henderson was waved away by Referee Shepherd after Captain Darge undertook a spot of mountaineering up the Spartans strikers back in the box. Darge packed away his crampons and play raged on.

With the game heading towards the break and an opportunity for a mid-match thaw in the sheds, Ian McFarland’s nod into the box found Sean Brown who uncharacteristically fired wide from six yards. Frustration etched across his face and with that, the interval beckoned.

The second half started where the first left odd – jolly well freezing and fair credit goes to the couple of hundred hardly souls who ventured out to Ferguson Park to watch. A virtual beer – or more likely coffee to you all!

Spartans were keen to launch the ball into the home box to seek the opener and on more than one occasion, a melee or a stramash ensued, with the ball hitting off legs like a human pinball machine game.

Ian McFarland, back with the skipper’s armband, showed his experience and tenacity with a telling block as the young Hearts side tried to go on the break.

A triple change saw the introduction of Sam Jones, Jamie Dishington and Gavin Morrison at the expense of McFarland, Henderson and Russell.

Whilst the scoreboard was feeling unloved in some respects, Spartans stand-in stopper Adam Meek remained alert as a 1st XI clean sheet beckoned.

With the game entering it’s final stages, Jamie Penker replaced Rhys Armstrong however there wasn’t to be a heroic supersub moment and one final shrill of the whistle under the full Mid Lothian moon saw the sides share the spoils – and the likely onset of hypothermia!

Lowland League: Spartans share the spoils on the road against Colts

Tuesday, December 6th, 2022

A power header by Bradley Whyte earned Spartans a share of the spoils as Dougie Samuel’s side drew 1-1 on the road at Broadwood Stadium against Cumbernauld Colts.

Under 20s starlet Josh Laing was back in defence whilst his youth team-mate Adam Meek earned a spot on the bench with the replacement gloves.

An early break saw good pace shown by Jamie Dishington up the line.  His delivery in to the box found Blair Henderson who just lost his footing under a challenge before he could unleash a shot at goal.

Cammy Russell then broke the offside trap, hurdled the challenge before sending the ball towards the box and Jamie Dishington who could only look on as he cleared the bar with his effort.

A fine save by the Colts keeper denied Blair Henderson from breaking the deadlock in what was a decidedly frantic opening five minutes.

The tempo for almost the remainder of the half simmered down to a frenzy with neither keeper particularly troubled and the fans in cold Cumbernauld cauldron not having much to clapping to do in order to help warm those frozen fingers.

Then, with the half time oranges on the players’ minds, Rhys Armstrong sent Cammy Russell up the flank, he whipped in a magnificent cross for Bradley Whyte who had time, space and oomph in his header to give Spartans the lead at the break.

HT: Cumbernauld Colts 0-1 Spartans

There was a change at the interval by the visitors as Adam Meek replaced Blair Carswell between the sticks.

Colts looked to get an early avenue back into the game and it took some sublime tracking back by Cammy Russell to win the ball back inside his own half to dent any further progress.

At the other end, Blair Henderson was denied by the keeper and Bradley Whyte couldn’t regain his bearings in time after being bundled to the ground in the build up to send the rebound home.

Adam Meek hadn’t had much to do since coming on at the break however he had to look smart to make a decent stop with his feet before an acrobatic Mikey Allan cleared the ball away.

An outstanding big leg out by Josh Laing in midfield denied Colts from going on another venture up the park and from this, Spartans went on the attack.

Jamie Dishington’s cross found Sam Jones in space at the back post but he could only direct his header wide of the post from six yards.

Then, in injury time of World Cup proportions, Colts went on one final salvaging mission and after a move from defence to attack, the cross from out wide was nodded back across the face of Adam Meek who, despite an outstretched arm, couldn’t reach the ball which found it’s way into the back of the net to levelled proceedings at the death.

Lowland League | Brown seeks winning start to demanding December

Saturday, December 3rd, 2022

Spartans are back in Park’s Motor Group Lowland League action this weekend with a trip to Cumbernauld Colts.

Dougie Samuel will be keen to see his side continue their eight match unbeaten run against the hosts which goes back to 2017, however games between the sides last season saw both fixtures won by solitary strikes.

Striker Sean Brown was looking forward to getting back into competitive action since he scored a brace in the recent 9-0 cup win over Glasgow University.

“It’s a big month for the club, with five games coming up including a busy Christmas period. It also leads into a hard January as well with a few of the teams around us at the top of the table to play then too.

“It’ll be important for us to keep up the momentum and when we hit January and those big games, we’re right in the running for it. We’re on a good run so it’s key that we continue building on this game after game.”

“With most of our games on artificial pitches, hopefully this prevents games being off over the winter so we don’t get bogged down in playing catch-up which can add extra challenges as well.

“We’ve had a couple of friendlies since our win over Glasgow Uni to keep the lads ticking over with game time, but we’re looking forward to getting back into competitive action against Colts on Saturday.”

“Colts will be tough opponents as ever and I don’t think their league position necessarily reflects what they are capable of. Last time out we won 3-0 and perhaps the scoreline flattered us a little as they were a tough side to break down.”

The match at Broadwood Stadium kicks-off at 3pm. Admission £8 Adults, £4 Concessions, Under 16s free with a paying adult.

Spartans unveil new Youth Ambassador player link-up initiative

Monday, November 21st, 2022

The Spartans are delighted to announce the launch of our exciting new initiative that will see closer links forged and stronger relationships built between our young players and the Men’s first team.

New Team Names:

The Spartans will be linking our youngest small sided team with a first team player.

2013 – 13s Allan (Michael Allan, Defender)

2014 – 14s Dishington (Jamie Dishington, Midfielder)

2015 – 15s Carswell (Blair Carswell, Goalkeeper)

Michael, Jamie and Blair have a long association with the Club and all 3 have progressed from the Youth Section to the First Team via the Player Pathway.  This journey will be a real inspiration for our young players and will visit team training sessions regularly.

Our senior players remain committed to being role models for our stars of the future

The first team players recently attended training to distribute the ‘One of the Team’ booklet to all the players.  The booklet is a handy guide to everything our players need to know about our first teams, the league they play in, who the managers are, and the players.

We hope it will give our players an insight into what goes on at their club that they might not know about.

We’re also delighted to relaunch our match day mascot opportunities. The first being the wonderfully enthusiastic and vocal 13s Dishington team who turned out in great numbers against Tranent earlier this month.

South Challenge Cup | Spartans hit nine in 3rd Round rout

Monday, November 21st, 2022

Blair Henderson’s hat-trick helped The Spartans en route to a South Challenge Cup 4th round home tie against Dunipace after their 9-0 victory over Glasgow University at Ainslie Park.

A break from the trials and tribulations of the Lowland League saw Dougie Samuel’s side welcome Mark Adams and his Students to the capital as the home side looked to continue their run in the tournament they reached the semi finals in last time out.

Spartans took the game to the West of Scotland 2 side from the outset and Sean Brown darted into the box before taking a stray finger to the face causing the stricken striker some discomfort and treatment was required.

His eye for goal though was back in when he was unlucky not to get the opener but for the keeper coming out to thwart him on the edge of the box.  A backtracking defender then getting into position to head Blair Henderson’s rebound off the line.

It remarkably took 25 minutes for the deadlock to be broken.  Another Spartans attack saw the ball break to Sam Jones on the edge of the box and his unstoppable drive left the keeper with no chance at his near post.

That lead was doubled just sixty seconds later.  Blair Henderson this time on hand to head home from ten yards as Spartans caused havoc in the Uni penalty area from another set-piece.

On the half hour mark it was time for Jamie Dishington to get in on the goals to drill home to make it 3-0 and effectively kill the tie.

Then, with the half time pies calling in the café, Spartans made it four.  Cammy Russell upended in the box and up stepped Blair Henderson to send the goalie the wrong way from the spot to make it 4-0.

Half Time: The Spartans 4-0 Glasgow Uni

It was a Blair Henderson hat-trick just two minutes after the interval when he was played into space inside the box and the prolific marksman didn’t need a written invitation to despatch this one.

Spartans kept both tannoy and twitter operatives on their toes by making a quartet of 54th minute substitutions Jamie Penker, Ian McFarland, Gavin Morrison and Alan Brown replacing Brad Whyte, Sam Jones, Josh Laing and Blair Henderson.

It was to be an inspired change for Jamie Penker who collected the ball in the box five minutes after coming on to produce a sublime turn and finish to make it 6-0.

The hosts refused to let up and midway through the half, Cammy Russell sent a low drive across the face of the goal and he looked on as it nestled in the bottom corner to make it 7-0.

Sean Brown then got on the end of the pin-point Jamie Dishington cross to head high into the top corner past a despairing dive from the goalie and it was another from the nogging with seven minutes left on the clock from Brown that saw the ninth – and final – goal of the afternoon.
