Lowland League | Armstrong aims to be architect in good fortune over the Braves

Saturday, January 28th, 2023

Its back to league action for Dougie Samuel’s side after a weekend frozen out in the January frost. The Gaffer, who recently collected his MBE at Holyrood Palace for services to football and the community, leads his side into a crucial clash against Caledonian Braves, looking to build on an eight match unbeaten run.

One of the key architects behind just one defeat in the last fifteen outings is midfield playmaker Rhys Armstrong.   Armstrong, who made the move to Ainslie Park in the summer 2021 from Alliance Park has no time for sentimentality as he gets set to face his former club.

“I don’t think about the game as being up against a former team, it’s just another game of football where I’ll go out onto the park and do my best to get the three points.  Obviously I’m up for the challenge and the lads will be too as we look to get a vital win at home.

“It wasn’t ideal having no game last week especially with the momentum we are picking up at the moment however I guess it offered any of the lads with knocks an extra week to recover before a big game like Braves.”

As the business end of the Lowland League season starts to gather pace, Armstrong knows focus is key for him and his Spartans teammates.

“It’s a bit of a cliché but we need to into every game as if it’s our last and the three points is the most important thing.”

Last time out saw a manic ending to the match against Open Goal Broomhill including a dramatic late penalty save from Blair Carswell.  Armstrong is full of praise for the never say die attitude that runs through the squad.

“No matter who the opposition is, we will never give up and we’ll push for goals right up to the final whistle.  Everyone plays their part in looking at achieving this including those coming on off the bench who can make an impact with their fresh legs at crucial moments in the game.”

“We’ve had four great training sessions since the Broomhill game and the Gaffer keeps the confidence up throughout the changing room and ensures we keep our focus and don’t get ahead of ourselves too.”

Caledonian Braves 2-4 Spartans – 29/10/22.

A blustery afternoon at Alliance Park saw the epitome of a game of two halves. Bradley Whyte got Spartans off to an ideal start with the head before the ball hit off his hip to outfox the Braves defence to double the lead.  Rhys Armstrong slide home before half time to put Spartans 0-3 up at the break.  Braves came out from the sheds all guns blazing and scored two in just five hair-raising minutes before Blair Henderson swooped to head home to secure the points late on.

Our East of Scotland Qualifying Cup tie against Stoneyburn Juniors is unsurprisingly off as the pitch is currently under a blanket of frost.

A date for the rescheduled attempt to play the tie will be announced in due course.

In other news, our Under 20s fixture on Friday night away in Denny against Dunipace has also fallen foul to the freeze.

Lowland League | Sides deliver drama infused draw in downpour

Monday, January 16th, 2023

Man of the Match Blair Carswell’s last gasp penalty spot kick save saw Spartans earn a share of the spoils in an insane end to a pulsating clash against Open Goal Broomhill in the Lowland League match of the day.

Josh Laing returned to the heart of the home defence alongside Jordan Tapping who sported a face mask to protect a broken nose suffered in an aerial challenge at K-Park seven days previous.

It was a blustery start to the game with the wind offering neither side an advantage, instead it gave chills to the hardy 323 souls sheltering in the stand.

The early exchanges offered nothing much by way of excitement nor noteworthy attempts on goal at either end.  A brief mix-up in the away box saw the Keeper under pressure, only for the Ref to spare his blushes by calling out an infringement on the stopper as he sought to reclaim the ball.

Cammy Russell started as he left off against East Kilbride, largely on the ground after being upended as the playmaker continued to trouble opposition as he has done throughout the term.

At the other end, a Broomhill corner almost brought the opener, however the flash header went wide of Blair Carswell’s goal.

Jamie Dishington’s turn of pace and direction saw him cut inside before unleashing a healthy drive that was turned round the post for a corner.

With the half time whistle imminent, another Spartans corner was swept into the box.  It found Blair Henderson lurking around the spot and after his header hit the bar, Josh Laing was on hand at the back post to nod home from close range to break the deadlock and also score his first senior goal.

With the wind picking up and the treat of rain imminent, what could have been a showcase for fast flowing football was flipped on its axis to becoming the survival of the fittest in proper Scottish winter weather.

Chances came and went at both ends with neither keeper necessarily troubled however it was the final quarter of the match that delivered full value for money for the punters.

With 72 minutes on the click, it was all square.  Spartans were making good progress into the Broomhill half when Rhys Armstrong looked to be fouled as he sought to get on the end of a lovely 1-2 with Bradley Whyte.  Nothing given by the man in the middle and from the subsequent clearance from the keeper, the ball finally made it’s way into the opposite net after Carswell was rounded and a cross was nodded home at the back post.

Moments later, one of the contentious talking points of the game that will have supporters debating long and hard over a pint.  The Broomhill keeper was on walkabout half way towards the centre circle and when the ball was passed back in his direct, it zipped up from the slippery surface, forcing him to control it with his arm.

As he walked sheepishly back towards his own box, the man in the middle was followed in hot pursuit by the wolves in Spartans clothing seeking the most severest of punishments for the handball incident in no-man’s land.  A yellow card was to be the ultimate fate.  The resultant free-kick by Cammy Russell saved.

The rain by now was falling in biblical proportions.  A corner into the Broomhill box was half cleared and picked up by Cammy Russell out wide.  He fought off his marker as he worked his way in-field before unleashing the most spectacular of strikes that tested the stitching of the net as it flew past the goalie in quick fashion.  Spartans once again ahead with ten minutes left on the clock.

Broomhill went on a late salvo operation.  A break in the middle of park saw a tasty shot tipped round the post by Blair Carswell for a corner as Spartans looked to hold out and on to their lead.

The corner came in and was remarkably poked home via the inside of the near post to make it 2-2.

As if the game hadn’t had enough drama by the 89th minute, more was still to follow.

Heading into injury time, Broomhill had possession deep in the home half.  Despite a valiant attempt to get the ball hoofed up the field, unfortunately the last effort saw contact made with a visiting player instead of leather and transgression inside the box saw the ref point to the spot.

The Cat was poised.  Eyeing up his man akin to a Lion sizing up a Zebra on the Serengeti.  Alan Cook stepped up.  He stroked the ball down low to his left from twelve yards.  Blair Carswell went the same way and pushed the ball to safety.

A counter-attack developed.  Spartans raced up the park in the rain.  Cammy Russell looked to be fouled on the edge of the box as he looked to square to Blair Henderson but nothing given.  Then, after winning the ball back again, Bradley Whyte went on one final lung-bursting run, but could only look on as his shot swung agonisingly away from the far post at the last moment.

The final whistle blew. The fans went home wet and ponderous. A draw most likely, conditions included, a fair result.

Lowland League | Maintaining momentum key focus says Morrison

Saturday, January 14th, 2023

If ever the adage ‘hard work pays off’ required a flag carrier, Gavin Morrison would be at the front of the queue following his fight back from a lengthy spell on the treatment table.

The 33 year old midfielder brings a wealth of experience into the heart of the Spartans engine room and the former Inverness Caley player, who has also had a spell in Iceland, is looking forward to the next task in his flourishing career – the visit of Open Goal Broonhill to Ainslie Park.

Speaking ahead of the Park’s Motors Lowland League match of the day, Morrison said, “The boys have been doing great of late and I’m delighted that I’m back and able to contribute too.  It’s been a pretty frustrating period for me, trying to get myself fit and all I wanted to do was to get back playing and helping the boys on the pitch.

“We’ve been up against some good sides recently and we’re doing well, putting wins together which is what everyone wants.  The dressing room is in a good place and we’ve just got to keep on working hard and continue what we’ve been doing.

“It’s a great squad to be part of . You want to come and play football and work hard, so I’m just happy to be doing it.”

The league table is a congested one at the upper echelons of the roster. Morrison is keen to ensure his side maintain the momentum they have been building up in recent weeks and the summer signing from Cowdenbeath is looking for more of the same come 3pm Saturday afternoon.

Morrison added, “I think we’ve just got to focus on what we’ve been doing.  We’ve been playing well and working consistently as a unit.  We’ve been dominating large spells of games which is so important in this league you know you are coming up against good teams.

“It’s been a long time since the first game against Open Goal and we’re probably both different sides.  Consistency breeds confidence.  We’ve developed a strong defence since the start of the season and clean sheets have been crucial too.  You only have to look at Blair Carswell’s save late on last week to see just how important these parts of the jigsaw over ninety minutes are.

“It’s a great foundation for the rest of the team to go express themselves and play football so we’re very grateful to have them behind us.”

Kick-off is 3pm. Admission £9 Adults, £6 Concessions.

Lowland League | Free-kick stunner sees Russell win Kilby tussle for Spartans

Sunday, January 8th, 2023

Cammy Russell’s sublime first half free-kick was enough to separate the sides and earn Spartans all three points in an enthralling encounter at K-Park.

Gaffer Dougie Samuel selected the same starting XI that defeated Civil in the Hogmanay North Edinburgh derby as he looked to make it four wins on the bounce on Lowland League duty.

Spartans were quick out the blocks in front of a decent crowd inside K-Park and Gavin Morrison’s cross into the box found Blair Henderson however the striker just couldn’t get his toes round the ball enough to direct home.

It was even closer shortly after when a Cammy Russell long throw was won in the air by Jordan Tapping who nodded on into the path of Rhys Armstrong but he could only fire wide, much to his evident disappointment.

The home side looked for some possession of their own however they were denied by a resolute Spartans defence.

It was defender Jordan Tapping, who earned the Malt and Hops Man of the Match award, who was next up to test the Kilby keeper when his shot in the box from a Kieran Watson cross merited a decent save.

As the late East Kilbride sunshine dipped behind the stand, the temperature dipped in the air however it remained hotly contested on the pitch with some feisty and robust challenges going.

With the game looking to head towards half time with a stalemate the likely outcome, Cammy Russell was the victim of yet another foul some 30 yards out.

Cammy Russell dusted himself down once again, stepped up and sent a glorious effort round the wall and into the top corner of the Kilby net.

HT: East Kilbride 0-1 The Spartans

A dynamic race through the middle of the park by Rhys Armstrong saw the midfield playmaker pass to Cammy Russell however the deadlock breaker fired wide.

Mikey Allan required treatment on the touchline after he was manhandled out of play without the transgressor receiving further punishment. It was in direct contrast to the following incident where Rhys Armstrong picked up a booking after being brought down in front of the stand, only for the match official to deem Armstrong had made the most of the situation.

It was a relatively uneventful afternoon between the sticks for Blair Carswell however The Cat was called upon to get down low to save after a cross was flung into the box and the header was certainly on target.

Harvey Swann replaced Rhys Armstrong midway through the half and the substitute almost made it an incredible introduction when Cammy Russell sent the ball across the middle of the penalty area however Swann was unable to connect.

Sean Brown was next to enter the fray and he came on to allow Cammy Russell to cool down the ankles that had received some attention.

There was a delay shortly after when Jordan Tapping required treatment when an elbow from a Kilby defender made contact with his nose in an aerial engagement.

A long ball up the park then saw Sean Brown winning the footrace as he made his way towards the East Kilbride box, only for the keeper to race out of his box and unceremoniously clatter the striker. It was only a booking for the goalkeeper who was perhaps saved by the presence of a back-tracking team mate from a stiffer penalty.

Then, with the game deep into injury time, Bradley Whyte had enough gas in the tank to go on a energy sapping run. Despite attempts to haul him down, he regained his footing before releasing the ball into the path of Sean Brown who looked decidedly onside but sadly not in the mind of the match official with the flag.

Spartans held on despite a late East Kilbride attempt to snatch a late equaliser and after a World Cup-esque 8 additional minute of added time, the final whistle echoed around K-Park.

Lowland League | Positive start to New Year but momentum build is key for Kieran

Friday, January 6th, 2023

The Spartans head to East Kilbride on Saturday as the Lowland League hurtles itself into 2023.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Spartans midfielder Kieran Watson noted that momentum was key in what has been a suite of tough games in recent weeks, continuing on Saturday.

“It was great to get the New Year off to a positive start with the win against Rangers but that’s parked now.  The main thing for us at the moment is to maintain momentum going into the following game.  That’s us now unbeaten in six league games although we’ve dropped some points along the way by picking up draws.”

With the competitiveness of the Lowland League and the congested top end of the business proceedings this year attracting attention from pundits and interested observers from afar, Watson insisted focus remained fully on what Spartans can impact on during 90 minutes and not being distracted by events elsewhere.

“We’re just looking after ourselves just now and not overly concerned by results elsewhere in the league to be honest.  We had a good training session again on Thursday and our attention now is fully on Saturday’s game.

“Obviously it’s a massive game, as they always are against East Kilbride – although every one of them is just now – and we’ll work hard to get the three points.”

Kick-off is 3pm at K-Park. Admission £8 Adults, Concessions £5.
