Under 20s | Atkinson pleased with progress ahead of Binos clash

Thursday, March 23rd, 2023

It’s Friday night under the lights at Ainslie Park for Les Atkinson’s Under 20s Development as they welcome Stirling Albion to North Edinburgh in the latest round of Conference A league fixtures.

After a dogged display in the Cumbernauld rain last weekend, that saw Seb Mrowcyznski hit the net to equalise after the break and Mackie Scott come up with a late equaliser to steal a share of the spoils.  Earning the plaudits last week against OG Broomhill was goalie Rowan Weir.  The young stopper made his Under 20s debut in an assured performance after taking over the gloves from Miko Komocki who remains out through injury.

Earlier this week, no fewer than eight of the squad featured in the 1st Team’s 9-0 victory over Stoneyburn FC in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup.   Callum McKay, Ben Lamont and Given Ndlovu all earning their first outings in the Senior team that also included Adam Meek, Josh Laing, Aaron Cameron, Mackie Scott and Sam Coats.

Lamont and Scott both bagged a braces in a collective performance that impressed gaffer Les Atkinson.

“I was delighted with the performance of them all.  They showed that they were worth their shot, they showed that they can compete at that sort of level although they know that there are levels above they need to be aiming for.  I thought they equipped themselves well but perhaps equally as important, they represented the Under 20s well and I was pleased by the way they fitted in.”

Atkinson was in the stand on Tuesday night assessing his chorus of young starlets. Did the viewing offer a warm sense of personal pride for the Gaffer?

“Its not necessarily about the pride for me personally, but rather for the whole of the 20s coaching team.  However the real pride should be within themselves for being able to get that merited call-up. As coaches, we are simply a conduit to helping them achieve these goals to be honest.

“But for the players, I want them to see what it’s like to experience first team senior football whilst almost being mindful that they have to be patient and it will continue to be hard work and improvement to develop further opportunities.”

Thursday night’s training session in the rain saw the players integrate back into the squad and Atkinson was in hopeful mood ahead of Friday fixture against Stirling Albion.

“Let’s be honest, it will be a lot closer than the game earlier in the season.  I see a team who will be mortally hurt by that result on a night when everything we did worked.  We had 14 shots on target that night and scored with eleven of them.  So, it wont be like that again. Stirling Albion have improved since then although we’ve progressed well as the season has unfolded too.

“I’m still looking to finish as high up the table as mathematically possible and that continues on Friday.  We know we can compete with anyone in the league however consistency is key which is something we are looking to build on and take into next season.

“We’re also still in two cup competitions as well so we are still in the mix for silverware and I’m happy with the way things are going and with the progression with a number of the guys too.”

Spartans u20s v Stirling Albion kicks off at 7.45pm and entry is free.

Qualifying Cup | Teengers at the helm as Spartans flush out Fulshie

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023

The Spartans set up another cup clash against Dundonald Bluebell following a 9-0 victory over Stoneyburn FC in the 3rd Round of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup.

After two weather impacted attempts to play the tie in West Lothian, home advantage was reversed by the League Committee and the sides got round to going toe to toe at the third time of asking.

With Lowland League endevours in mind, Manager Dougie Samuel rung the changes with no fewer than eight Development Squad players in the match day squad.  Callum Mackay made his debut from the off and his peers Adam Meek started between the sticks, whilst there were places in the opening XI for Josh Laing and Ben Lamont.

It took just over 60 seconds for Spartans to open the scoring.  Sean Brown searching for the ball as it came into the box but he had his feet taken from him leaving Referee Tommi Kerr with his first – and not his last – easy decision to make of the night.

Up stepped Jamie Penker who dispatched the ball from 12 yards, finding the roof of the net leaving Connor Shaw – wearing a borrowed home goalie kit – little chance.

That lead was doubled in the 6th minute when Sean Brown showed some twinkle toe touches in the box before rounding the keeper to guide the ball into the empty net.

If the early two goal deficit wasn’t enough of a hill to climb for the visitors, their chance of emulating their giant killing act from earlier in the tournament were left in tatters when, in the 17th minute, Baley Ferris was shown a straight red card.  Whilst the details of the incident will be in the Referee’s report, it came after Spartans skipper Ian McFarland was visibility infuriated by actions that left him with a nasty cut on this face forcing his early retiral and he was replaced by Sam Coats.

Moments later, the numerical advantage in personnel resulted in the same in terms of number of goals.  A vintage burst of pace from Alan Brown saw his wheels burn the Fulshie defender and his cross was bundled over by Sean Brown to make it 3-0.  The goal brought up 100 in competitive action for the side this season.

A golden chance for the visitors to narrow the deficit came from a corner that fell to Gary Calvey however the striker blasted it over Adam Meek’s crossbar.

The admission money was worth it’s weight in Ben Lamont’s 35th minute goal.  The teenage striker, who has netted 15 times for the Development team this season so far, collected the ball out wide before cutting in and sending a sublime curler into the top corner drawing warm applause from team-mates and supporters alike.

The first half scoring wasn’t over and with three minutes left til the interval, a quickly taken corner was floating to the back post where Gregor Woods was found lurking and he nodded home from comfortably a solitary yard.

Half Time: The Spartans 5-0 Stoneyburn

Spartans made a change at the break with Aaron Cameron – who has played at the Academy since he was 3 years old – replaced Michael Herd.

The second half was just seven minutes old when Spartans made it six.  Ben Lamont timing the through ball with perfection and Sean Brown, still with almost half the park to run, went forth and netted his hat-trick.

Then it was Ben Lamont with a solo run of this own that made it seven.  The striker benefitting from a ricochet in defence, it fell to the pacey goal getter and he whizzed up the paddock, cut back inside the defender and calmly bagged his brace.

Further changes came on the hour mark when Sean Brown and Ben Lamont, who had scored five out of the seven, were replaced by Mackenzie Scott and his Under 20s team mate Given Ndlovu who made his senior debut.

There was a chance for both players not long after their introduction.  Mackie Scott looked to lob the keeper who had drifted off his line but could only clear the bar then Given Ndlovu showed his trickery to get into the box and in a one-on-one with the keeper, Connor Shaw pull off his finest save in a borrowed Spartans jersey, pushing the ball behind for a corner.

It proved to be little respite however for the keeper as he was once again beaten, this time by Mackie Scott who was pin-pointedly played into the box by Aaron Cameron before sliding beyond Shaw.

Adam Meek then pulled off a save at the other end that was to the filed under ‘one for the cameras’ as the home keeper, largely a bystander throughout the tie, looked to get in on the action.

Then, with just seven minutes on the clock, substitute Mackie Scott rounded off a decent night after Sam Coats won the ball in midfield, Gregor Woods collected and passed to Scott who still had work to do before drilling low into the bottom corner to make it 9-0.

Full Time: The Spartans 9-0 Stoneyburn FC

The victory sees Spartans head across the Forth Bridge on Wednesday 29th March where they will play Dundonald Bluebell in the next round.

Qualifying Cup | Spartans face Fulshie on Tuesday at Ainslie

Monday, March 20th, 2023

The Spartans welcome Stoneyburn to Ainslie Park on Tuesday night after the venue for the twice postponed East of Scotland Qualifying Cup fixture was reversed by the league committee in line with tournament rules.

Dougie Samuel’s men head into the tie against the conquerors of Berwick Rangers in the 2nd Round and the Ainslie Park side will be keen to avoid becoming another Lowland League scalp for Steven Sharp’s side.

Spartans go into the tie on the back of a 18 match unbeaten run across all competitions and will be keen to progress in a competition where they have lifted the trophy on ten occasions.

With two gruelling top of the table encounters in just 72 hours last week, there may be an opportunity for a wider squad involvement in the tie and following some impressive work by our Under 20s Development Squad, minutes may well be on offer for some of our young stars too.

Stoneyburn FC, known better as The Fulshie, currently playing in the East of Scotland Third Division. The Club were formed in 1928 however they folded in 1958. From the flames, a phoenix of it’s former side reborn as a Junior Club in 1983/84 season, after years in the juvenile and amateur ranks.

It’s been a challenging season for The Fulshie who, despite a relatively decent start to their league campaign, haven’t been able to register a victory since November, a 3-1 win over mid-table Livingston United.

However, the romance of the cup and a scalp in the tournament from the visitors already in the tournament could very well add up to an interesting 90 minutes of knock out football.

Dundonald Bluebell will be interested onlookers as they await the winners of this tie at home on a date yet to be determined.

Kick-off 7.45pm, Ainslie Park. Cafe / Bar will be open for refreshments. Admission is £9 adults, £6 concessions. Save hunting for cash by buying your tickets in advance via Fanbase by clicking here.

Finally, due to time constraints due to the fixture announcement, there won’t be a match programme. Sorry!

Lowland League | Spartans share the spoils with Celts

Saturday, March 18th, 2023

Rhys Armstrong’s second minute strike earned Spartans a draw in their second top of the table clash in 72 hours as they met a lively Celtic B at Excelsior Stadium.

After a thrilling victory against Stirling University midweek, the gaffer made a change at the back with Kevin Waugh returning to the heart of the defence.

Spartans got off to a dream start when the ball was played into the box, Blair Henderson leaving it to run into the path of Rhys Armstrong who rammed the ball home off the underside of the bar.

Celtic rallied and their array of young talent looked to get back on level terms however they found the visiting defence in resolute form.

A couple of home free-kicks were patiently played around with however there was no finished product, whilst at the other end of the field, Cammy Russell saw his effort go wide as Spartans looked to double their lead on the counter.

Another run through the middle from Rhys Armstrong after neat hold-up play by Blair Henderson saw Cammy Russell goes for a drive up the park but his shot just drifted behind.

Jamie Dishington then came close with his curled effort that was inches away from finding the target.

A long throw into the box by Cammy Russell was flicked on by Blair Henderson however there wasn’t a final taker on hand to send home as Spartans looked to double their lead.

Celtic continued to press and stroke the ball around like a chessmaster directing pieces across the board, looking for that end game move however the defensive shift being deployed by the Spartans side continued to be equal to the task.

A Spartans corner then bounced around the Celtic box like a pinball hitting off the legs of a plethora of players. It finally fell to Blair Henderson who done well to get his toe to the ball but could only watch on as his shot hit the outside of the post.

Sean Brown then came on for the industrious Blair Henderson before Ian McFarland swapped with scorer Rhys Armstrong with a quarter of an hour to go.

McFarland was in the thick of it shortly after when he put his body on the line to stop a shot on the edge of the box before requiring Sophie Marr’s magic sponge.

Then, deep into injury time, Celtic pressed once again, pushing the ball out wide and the low cross into the box took a nick before falling into the path of substitute Cummings who slid home from a couple of yards.

Lowland League | Spartans out to sparkle under the lights at the home of the Diamonds

Friday, March 17th, 2023

The Spartans are back in action for a rare Friday night under the lights this season when they travel to the home of Airdrieonians where they face another title challenger in the shape of Celtic B.

This will be the side’s second game in just 72 hours against fellow title challengers however these are the games that defender Mikey Allan has aspired to playing in since his time working his way through the Academy Pathway system.

“Tuesday to Friday is a quick turnaround for us but our focus is on collecting another three points. It’s getting to that time of the year where we are having to go to places and pick up points where we perhaps have some tired legs as it’s a long, demanding season however we just need to keep on going and with the depth in the squad this year, we know lads can come in at any stage to put in a solid shift.”

Mikey was once again in on the goals on Tuesday night, netting his 10th goal in 88 first team appearances.  It was the opener in a four goal first half flurry against Stirling University and whilst it may have taken many neutrals in the stand by surprise, Allan wasn’t so sure.

“Nah, I don’t think it was such a surprise to be honest.  We’ve been training hard and we’re on a good run at the moment.  We went into the game with everyone up for it and we knew it was going to be biggest game of the season in terms of expectations and whilst four nil at half time maybe flattered us slightly, I thought we played well and deserved it.  I’m not surprised of the performance we put in as I know the guys are more than capable of it.”

He plies his trade at the back and has been instrumental in helping contribute towards seventeen competitive clean sheets for the club this season. However he’s not been shy in popping up at the ‘other end’ to grab a goal on occasion, scoring eight so far this campaign.

“I’m pleased with the way I’m playing at the moment and I’m glad to be helping the boys up top as well as keeping a clean sheet at the back.  Obviously as a defender it’s more important for me to be focussing on the latter but it’s always nice to get a wee goal to help out the guys too.”

Mikey is one of several in the squad who have come through the Academy system, which are identified in the match programme team lines with an (A) to show recognition for players graduating through the player pathway ranks.

Whilst now one of the first names on the Gaffer’s line-up, the defensive powerhouse had these words of wisdom for those looking to follow his pathway progression.

“When you first move up into the first team, you might not necessarily get your chance right away, but it will come.  You just need to be patient.  Progressing from the Development Squad to the First Team is a big step up however when your time comes and your presented with a chance, grab it with both hands. I did and I’m grateful to be able to play regularly with such a great bunch of guys.”

Kick-off at Excelsior Stadium is 7.45pm.

Our Under 20s are also in action on the road where they travel to Cumbernauld to take on the Colts on the back pitches at Broadwood in Conference A.

Lowland League | First half goal frenzy sees Spartans defeat Uni

Wednesday, March 15th, 2023

Four first half goals including a sensational free-kick by Man of the Match Cammy Russell saw Spartans defeat fellow Lowland League title challengers Stirling University in front of a crowd of 375 at Ainslie Park on Tuesday night.

After an idle weekend, it was back to the action for Dougie Samuel’s Spartans however the Gaffer was without defender Kevin Waugh for this eagerly anticipated encounter.

The Students had won the previous clash between the sides earlier in the campaign and the squad knew they’d have to bring their ‘A Game’ to the party if they were to even the honours.

Within ninety seconds of the kick-off, Jamie Dishington’s cross into the box caused danger but it just couldn’t find the right connection from Blair Henderson’s head to trouble Ben Fry.

There then followed a manic two minute window that saw the hosts strike twice.  First up saw an effort turned behind for a corner which was whipped in deep to the back post for Mikey Allan to rise and power his headed home.  The Defender is having a fair season on the scoresheet and his nogging now puts him in the club’s Top 25 scorers in the League.

If that got the fans cheering, Cammy Russell’s free-kick from some 30 yards may well have caused injury from collective jaw dropping in the stand.  It’s not the first time the Spartan Army have been wowed by the dead ball specialist and up he stepped to unleash an sensational effort that Fry could only assist in lodging it into the back of the net.

It was a frantic opening ten minutes and the game then simmered down into a mild frenzy, save for Cammy Russell’s booking, likely out of frustration for not being awarded a free-kick of his own moments earlier.

Russell was controlling the game and his blistering drive warmed Fry’s hands causing him to spill but the keeper just managed to recover in time as Blair Henderson looked to pounce.

Stirling, on a rare excursion into the home penalty box, almost halved the deficit only for a net bound strike to be legally blocked on the line and unceremoniously hoofed to safety.

Ben Fry was certainly the busier of the two keepers and it was his own defender who had him galloping out to the touchline with a stray back-pass however in trying to control with his first touch, the second was to bring down Cammy Russell and a yellow card was shown.

Then, with five minutes left on the clock, Spartans further extended their lead.  A defensive faux pas by the tourists allowed Bradley Whyte to nip in and after he rounded Fry, who was mindful of his recent transgression, he deposited the ball into the empty onion bag to make it three.

The home support had more than their Bain’s Mince Pies to chew over at half time as it was before their side added a fourth before the break.

Tremendous build up play by chief tormentor Cammy Russell saw his selflessly square the ball to Blair Henderson who seldom requires a written invitation to do his thing and turn it into the gaping goal.

HT: The Spartans 4-0 Stirling University

Stirling came out from the sheds looking for an avenue back into the game and enjoyed a decent percentage of the opening stages after the break however they found the home defence in defiant form.

If the first half was the Big Daddy, any hope of a Giant Haystacks comeback off the ropes from the Stirling side were dashed just before the hour mark when Burrows scythed down Bradley Whyte on the edge of the box as he raced towards Fry’s penalty area.  His namesake with the whistle, Colin, was left with little option than to offer the Uni player first dibs on the shower gel.

Spartans made the first of a series of changes shortly after when Harvey Swann replaced Bradley Whyte.

The tempo and temperature both dipped in the second half with Spartans in control and the Students down to 10 men.

A triple Spartans change with a quarter of an hour to go saw Alan Brown, Sean Brown and Gregor Woods swapped places with Ian McFarland, Cammy Russell and Blair Henderson all enjoyed well-earned rests.

The ball was being stroked around with consummate ease by the Spartans side with the depleted opponents looking to pick off any scraps offered, which were in limited supply.

One final swap from the dugouts gave Jamie Penker minutes against his former side.

Applause rung out within the stand with the news of Cammy Russell picking up his seventh Malt and Hops Man of the Match award of the season.
