Coming up – a look ahead at the Spartans weekend

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024

It’s a trip to Xcite 3G in Linlithgow on Friday night for Les Atkinson’s Under 20s where they take on Linlithgow Rose in Round 12 of their Development League season.

Last week’s battling win against the Wasps opens up a double-digit gap between the sides with Kelty Hearts remaining in second spot with a game in hand.  Missing the clash will be defender Calum Malcolm who serves a suspension as a result of his red card against Alloa.

Friday’s hosts have had a challenging season thus far which sees them four points adrift at the foot of the table however there will be absolutely no room for complacency within the visitor’s camp ahead of the 7.45pm KO.

Another away day awaits Douglas Samuel’s side on Saturday who return to SPFL 2 action after a securing a semi final berth in the EOS City Cup last weekend.

Trips to New Dundas Park have offered up drama and goals in pulsating encounters between two Clubs who have both achieved successful journeys via the pyramid pathway to reach this level.

Last season, Spartans debut campaign in League 2 saw a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw in the first away day, with Marc McNulty and Blair Henderson netting in a midweek clash in the February freeze.

Our last visit to EH19 was settled by a sublime 25 yard half-volley from Blair Henderson as Spartans earned a vital three points as they jockeyed for a promotion play-off place.

Saturday’s game kicks-off at the traditional 3.00pm time slot.  Entry at gate cash/card: Adults (17-65) £15 / Concessions over 65s/disabled carer £10 / Youth (12-16) £5 Children under 12 free with paying Adult.

Our visitors have produced a handy guide to digest for travelling supporters.  https://www.bonnyriggrosefc.co.uk/a/match-information-for-william-hill-league-2-fixtures-64582.html

It’s Scottish Gas Scottish Cup Sunday for Jack Beesley’s side at Ainslie Park where the visitors are Glenrothes Strollers in the 3rd Round.

Whilst Spartans enter the tournament at this stage courtesy of their SWPL 1 standing, Strollers, who sit top of SWFL East have already defeated Dyce (12-0) and Giffnock (1-0) in the search for silverware.

Beesley’s squad – the youngest in SWPL 1 – will be keen to get back into action following the International Break.  Tartan Spartans Cacee McKenna and Olivia Chomczuk were in Hungary on Scotland u19s duty too, with the squad securing progress to Round 2 in EURO qualifiers.

Hannah Jordan will also be looking at continue her fine run of form which saw her shortlisted for the Player of the Month award for November.

Kick-off is 1.00pm. PATG (cash & card) available. £8 adult/ £5concession, U16’s free or you can purchase tickets via Fanbase app.

City Cup: Stowe double sees off spirited Swifts to seal semi spot

Monday, December 2nd, 2024

The Spartans set up a City Cup Semi Final clash against Edinburgh City after an eventful five goal first round encounter in Dalgety Bay against Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts.

Douglas Samuel made a series of changes in the starting XI from last time out as the SPFL 2 side took on the East of Scotland League 2 outfit in an encounter that at best was a tale of two halves and bizarrely nail bitingly bonkers come the end of the second.

Any late comer inside the Leisure Centre’s ground were set to miss the opening Spartans goal which came within 44 seconds of the start.  Brogan Walls winning the ball in the middle of the park moments after kick-off before threading it into the path of Mark Stowe who didn’t need an invitation to shoot and he broke the deadlock in quick time.

That lead doubled in the tenth minute, delayed only by some scrambled defending by the home side.  Spartans quick movement on and off the ball stretched the hosts and when Bradley Whyte carved open another opportunity for Stowe, he curled his effort beyond the keeper and into the net.

Stowe was unfortunate not to make that match ball his when Danny Denholm’s dash to the bye-line saw a cross come in with pace, only for the finish to fly over the bar.

Blair Henderson was next to have a shot in the box but the limbs were all over the place to block and deny the Spartans striker.

At the other end of the park, Adam Meek was largely an innocent onlooker however he had to look sharp to come off his line and done just about enough to clear his lines and flatten the onrushing Swifts man in the process.

Then, on the stroke of half time, a decent effort from the hosts, their first of the afternoon, was tipped onto the bar by Meek and away to safety.

HT: Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 0-2 The Spartans

A change for the tourists at the break saw Cammy Russell replaced Blair Henderson.

The opening moments of the first half brought us a goal, whilst the start to the second had barely allowed Henderson the chance to get the lid of his shower gel before Brogan Walls was joining him in the sheds after he was shown a straight red for what looked like nothing more than a robust challenge in the middle of the park.

Confusion reigned as the Ref dismissed the Spartans playmaker as skipper Kevin Waugh led the protestations, all made of course in vain.

The numerical advantage didn’t appear to cause the visitors too much discomfort, especially when Cammy Russell broke into the box before his shot across goal nestled into the Swifts keeper’s bottom corner on the hour mark.

Spartans made a brace of changes with Under 20s duo Archie Wylie and Jamie Anderson coming on – a senior debut for the latter – as they replaced Bradley Whyte and Mark Stowe.

With a quarter of the game left to play out, Swifts had clearly not read the script and Dylan Vannett scooped up a loose pass outside the Spartans box before swapping feet and finishing well.

Two minutes later, largely the length of time it took Swifts to perfect an impressive 13 pass move, the margin was reduced to a solitary strike with Dan Thomson tapping home from a yard out.

Spartans set out to reinstate a wider gap in the scoreline and Archie Wylie’s shot was centimetres away from doing so as the teenager’s effort whizzed past the post.

His fellow Under 20s team-mate showed no fear in his introduction to the senior side when he put his nogging in the way of a potentially threatening cross as Swifts looked to grab what, at half time, may have been considered a fantasy equaliser.

Swifts second half endeavours were to run out of time in the end, much to the visiting side’s relief.

Dalgety Bay watch – Spartans set to face Swifts in City Cup clash

Wednesday, November 27th, 2024

The Spartans head across the Queensferry Crossing on Saturday to Dalgety Bay in a break from SPFL 2 where they will face Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts in the East of Scotland (City) Cup 1st Round (Kick-off 2.30pm).

After being scuppered by the snow last weekend, it will offer gaffer Douglas Samuel an opportunity to get match minutes into the legs of players who undoubtedly are keen to build on recent momentum that has offered a brace of 3-0 victories.

Our hosts ply their trade in EOS Division 1.  Whilst it has been a challenging start to the campaign for The Swifts, they had a decent cleansheet win over Hawick Royal Albert last month as they progressed in the Alex Jack Cup.

The Swifts enter the competition as winner of last season’s East of Scotland Qualifying Cup and they join the East of Scotland FA members playing in the SPFL in the competition.  The winners will play Edinburgh City in one semi-final whilst the winners of the Dunbar Utd v Bonnyrigg Rose tie head to Kelty for their shot at reaching the final.

The Spartans are four times winners of the ‘City’ Cup (4 times): 1998 | Livingston 1 Spartans 2 (Mitchell x2), 2005 | Berwick Rangers 1 Spartans 4 (Kader (x2), Antoni & Mitchell), Jan 2007 | Berwick Rangers 1 Spartans 2 (Young, Motion) and Apr 2008 | Berwick Rangers 2 Spartans 3 (O’Donnell x2, Preston).

Admission prices: Adults £8.00 / Concession £4.00 / Kids U16 Free – cash or contactless payments

Spectators who are driving to the game are encouraged to park on Harbour Way rather than directly outside the centre on Harbour Drive.

With light cloud and a gentle breeze forecast for Saturday afternoon, attendees can expect a fully stocked snack hut inside the ground for supporters to buy pies, tea, coffee, soft drinks etc.

SPFL 2: MATCH POSTPONED

Saturday, November 23rd, 2024

Regrettably, despite a valiant attempt to do so, today’s William Hill SPFL 2 fixture v Stranraer has failed to pass the midday inspection.

Coming up – a look ahead at the Spartans weekend

Wednesday, November 20th, 2024

What’s for the weekend ahead?  Weather permitting, we’ve got a trio of top ties for our Spartans Senior sides on the chilly horizon.

Coming up on Friday, there’s a trip west for our Under 20s who take on Caledonian Braves in a Development League Cup Quarter Final at Alliance Park.

Spartans go into the game on the back of a tough Challenge Cup tie against Armadale last week which ended in a narrow 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Max Williamson and Archie Wylie.

Hosts Braves also made progress in the same tournament with a win against Edinburgh United which came on the back of a 13 goal extravaganza in their last league outing against Kelty Hearts.

Kick-off at Alliance Park is 8.00pm

Douglas Samuel’s SPFL 2 side will be looking to build on two positive clean sheet performances when they welcome Stranraer to Ainslie Park on Saturday afternoon.

Last season’s fixtures between the clubs – the first between the sides – featured some epic encounters, included the late comeback show from Ayrton Sonkur.  Earlier this season, a double from Paul Watson saw Spartans salvage a point at Stair Park after a sub-optimal opening half.

The visitors make the trip to North Edinburgh minus striker Ryan Edgar who received a red card to go with his birthday cards across the last seven days during a last gasp loss at home to Bonnyrigg.

Spartans will need to be wary of a Stranraer backlash and your support on the sidelines will certainly be the 12th man for Sammy and the lads!

You can purchase tickets in advance via Fanbase: https://app.fanbaseclub.com/Fan/Tickets/SelectType?fixtureId=6062

League 2 Fixtures: Bonnyrigg v Stirling Albion, Edinburgh City v East Fife, Elgin v Clyde and Forfar v Peterhead.

Hannah Jordan’s star billing following last weekend’s hat-trick exploits have offered Jack Beesley’s Spartans Women’s side a welcome boost as they head across the M8 where they face league leaders Glasgow City in SWPL 1.

Spartans head into the game in 8th place with a decent run of form in recent weeks bumping the side up the league table as they wrestle for points to see who finishes in their highest position outside the Top 5.

The game at Petershill Park kicks-off at 1.00pm.  Tickets can be purchased online here: https://glasgowcityfc.co.uk/products/season-ticket-24-25-november-24-2024

SPFL 2: Russell double instrumental in beating Binos

Monday, November 18th, 2024

A Cammy Russell double and a goal from Blair Henderson saw Spartans secure their second 3-0 victory in as many Saturdays with a win over Stirling Albion at Ainslie Park.

Manager Douglas Samuel kept the faith in the same starting XI that defeated Forfar last time out with the addition of Archie Wylie to the match day squad.

As the bitter wind-chill factor cut through the 501 in attendance across the Pilton arena, Spartans looked on fire from the off with Blair Henderson’s effort inside the box being blocked and sent behind for a corner within the opening minute of the game.

Whilst Kevin Waugh was resigned to a spot on the home bench, his brother Ricky was keen to grab the bragging rights at the next family gathering however his effort from outside Blair Carswell’s box would only trouble the observing Bino’s support standing on the embankment behind the Spartans goal.

Brogan Walls was putting in another impressive shift and his eyes lit up when Blair Henderson offloaded to him 25 yards out however the shot would only drift wide and behind as the hopes of a deadlock breaker looked to be decidedly elusive.

HT: The Spartans 0-0 Stirling Albion

Whilst the temperature dropped, the tempo increased as Spartans took the game to the visitors after the break.

Cammy Russell sprung the offside trap, ventured into the Albion box but his square ball seeking Blair Henderson was cut out, then the same player found Brogan Walls who sent his shot wide.

Finally, in the 56th minute, persistence finally paid off.  James Craigen’s free-kick to the back post was knocked back into the melting pot by Brogan Walls.  An unlikely miss-kick by Cammy Russell fortuitously fell into the path of Blair Henderson who, at the second bite of the proverbial cherry, poked the ball into the net to open the scoring.

That advantage doubled just five minutes later.  Again, Henderson and Walls were at the heart of the build up play, the letter launching Cammy Russell who won the footrace against Erik Sula to despatch the ball across Derek Gaston and into the bottom corner.

Douglas Samuel freshened some legs, with Jamie Dishington and Lewis Hunter replacing the industrious duo of Walls and Scott.

Meanwhile, there was an almighty kerfuffle off the pitch as a photo of a burnt pie was circulated on X (yes, folk are still on the platform despite newspapers and suspension bridges alike publicly announcing their decisions to leave earlier in the week).  Thankfully, calm was restored in the sad tale of the sorry looking savoury and the frustrated Bino’s fan involved was rewarded with a second half replacement in the shape of a brand new bridie.

Back to the game and Mark Stowe came off the bench with a quarter of an hour left on the clock, replacing scorer Henderson.

James Craigen’s afternoon was cut short after a collision tight on the touchline and he was replaced by Kevin Waugh.

Then, with the scoreboard, sponsored by Village Hotels, showing 89 minutes played, Albion looked to launch a late ball in order to set up a grandstand finale.  Sadly for the visitors, that effort was to bounce off a fellow Bino and Cammy Russell was played in to finish off with aplomb.
